- In today’s Balkan Travel Vlog we explore the capital city of North Macedonia! Skopje is the capital and largest city in North Macedonia.
The Republic of North Macedonia (also known as the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, FYROM, and FYR Macedonia) is a landlocked country in the heart of the Balkans. The majority of the population is ethnic Macedonian and Orthodox Christian but there is also a significant Albanian Muslim minority.
Before exploring the town we stopped at Silbo, which is the most popular bakery in Skopje. There were two lines of people that spewed outside onto the streets, the line moved quickly, but it was definitely the place to be. We ordered a burek and it didn’t disappoint. It was one of the best bureks we’ve had. If you’re in Skopje we highly recommend taking a visit to Silbo!
We visited the Skopje Fortress and met a local. He was nice enough to answer our questions about a wide range of topics in the country such as the name change from Macedonia to North Macedonia, the many statues (also known as the Skopje 2014 Project), and he gave his opinion on foreigners visiting North Macedonia in 2022.
If you are looking to visit Europe on a budget or what to do as a tourist in Skopje? Visit the Skopje Fortress, walk around the small city center and try to count all the statues, visit a local brewery, and start a conversation with a local!

He just shared that with honesty, for sure there is no such Balkan country that is welcoming black people, and hardly any in Europe. But in Macedonia, no one will do anything to you if you are black, he is just saying you would have struggles to find your place in the community. Hungary and Poland are much more dangerous for Black People.

The guy you spoke to is ethnically Albanian so his opinion isn’t the opinion of ethnic Macedonians in Macedonia who constitute over 70% of the population. Albanians are around 23-17% of the population.

The earliest known sources that describe the existence of a merchant quarter on the bazaar's territory date back to the 12th century. During Ottoman rule of Skopje, the Old Bazaar developed rapidly to become city's main centre of commerce.

Just letting you know that Disneyland near Paris is much older than each and every one of these statues of ancient greek and bulgarian heroes, historical figures and none of them is even related to the "Republic of North Macedonia" or as the Balkans call them "The Communist Republic of North Korea" on the Balkans.
I was born there and the status are just as bad as the people there the country is poor and bad the only "good" thing you will see is the status the rest is very terrible, I've been almost robbed there, everyone is migrating out of that country, once the average iq of Macedonia was 87 and alot of drug crimes are going in there.

Young people may accept others of colour but allot of the older generation don’t like change and a black person walking the streets is seen as change so they will dislike them based on that. Not that anyone will harm a black person but they will get stared at allot due to being very different and many not seeing one that often. They will feel uncomfortable for sure but not afraid for their safety in any way.

Black people are welcome in most of the Balkans, the problem with illegal migrants from Africa is what he was referring to, although it is very bigoted of him to think like that and he probably needs to be educated and taught that all people are equal, regardless of race and religion.

The darker the skin tone, the more likely they are to steal. This comment won’t be liked and people will call me ignorant/racist/uneducated but I frequently travel and some statistics and observations have to be considered.
Regarding Macedonia, there are no black Africans and the only black people will be from Western Europe to which are not poor and fine. Biggest concern are the Albanian and Romanian gypsies.

People of colour need to know what the people of the country may be like towards them. The truth must never be hidden.
First of all the name of this country should be changed as it used to be. Which it was dardania or Illyria. The rest of the names make no sense to me. Macedonia or north Macedonia are fake names. . Macedonian historians know it greek historians also know it but they don’t accept it. But under the soil of Macedonia facts speak only albanian Illyrian or dardania and nothing else. And is backed up by most of ancient historians. The truth will take time to come out but will never fade away. Just dig all the old ruins in Macedonia today and judge according to that the rest is nonsense
