    The driverless portion is near the end. We tackle both conventional and rotary straw. I didn't think the difference would be that big, but animals will poop on anything.

    Hey Cousin. Aunt Bert told me about your channel. I'm happy for you. On that same note, I'd rather take a beating than ever bail hay again. Especially alfalfa. Hope your dad is still getting better. Lots of love.

    We had wheat straw one year that got ground up really bad from our 2388. Instead of using our new holland baler we got our neighbor to come over with his inline case baler that has a much lower pickup attachment. That really made the difference in getting as much material picked up as possible.

    Use a bar type rake, only hit the sides to fluff it up towards the middle, you'll need to make 2 passes per swath I'm afraid. We've had to do that before. If you have a wheel rake, that would be better, just need to adjust to make a tight windrow. This is the issue with rotaries.
    Before we got a round baler, we did nothing but small square bales. Did brome, straw, clover, alfalfa, always ended up with around 20k - 30k small squares each yr. Lot of "barn work" lol. Great video, cheers :)

    That's the difference between a walker machine and a rotor machine. The case combine really chopped it up fine with the rotor. Have a great afternoon

    I now think the big reason that we always had so much trouble baling straw was the fact that we always followed a rotary combine(atleast as far back as I can remember). Never realised the big difference, between straw walker and rotary.

    They didn't take the chopper knifes out that's why it's so fine. I run a 1680 case and it doesn't chew it up that bad

      Axial flow combines usually produce straw like that when the concave is closed, the rotor is run flat out and the fan is turned up. Usually by people who don’t bale as it’s the most productive way to thresh the grain out of the straw, you just rely on the fan to separate it, it makes spreading and post harvest incorporation easy too

    • @MrMagnum7220

      If the straw is bone dry, it can chew it up more. That is chopped up pretty bad

      @@Northern_Farmer I've had twin rotors since 1995, when we did custom combining the guys liked the straw better from the TR then they did my John Deere walker machines.
      It made better bedding in the barn.
      Only straw the TR would destroy was barley, or oats that had alfalfa in it

  • @possumholler05
    @possumholler05 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Axial flow will make a finer straw by nature, but his chopper is what turned it to confetti like that

    • @lukestrawwalker
      @lukestrawwalker 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      He said in the vid that they took the spreaders off, SO by that I presume the machine had the spinners on back not a chopper. If they ran it through a chopper it'd be nothing but duff and the baler wouldn't even pick it up. Rotary combines fairly well demolish the straw before it goes out the back anyway. Cylinder/concave machines are much gentler on the straw. Later! OL J R :)

    I was watching Don when his belt broke on the 3rd. If you watch straight pipe acres in canada, he is replacing all his belts but one. Some of his belts look like they came with the combine. I think one chain actually did. Lots of swearing on his channel so beware.

    White straw is slightly lighter than hay,
    but it is sharper against cuticles.
    The worst thing, however, is rye straw.

    Case combines dont make good straw, much easier other brands you can remove chopper oit of the way, when we have people bale atraw behind our 7230 we cut it high then they come back and cut it down, but i take fine cut knives out helps but a chopper at 3000 rpms won't be much left, we cut a lot of our wheat at 15 to 20% helps on the atraw but hence the reason why we cut it high and they come back

    Is it possible to fill one wagon to its safe loading, then fill it all the way with bales from the second wagon, using the bales on wagon two as stairs so you could build wagon one higher, it would be double handling for a number of bales but it mean that you could load one wagon to the weight limit and not have to stack acrobatically whilst moving ?
