Well I think it confused people because its the odd concept of volume, mass and weight. If we base the steel and feathers off of a consistent volume, than it would obvious which is heavier. However, the problem about weight and mass is that weight is based off of multiplying mass with gravity. Since gravity is obviously consistent and they both have the same mass then the weight would also be the same. Its that connection between weight and mass that confuses most people, cause one could say "they both weigh a pound" and everyone would understand, but say "they are both a kilogram" and that's when you see a split room.
