    Lucia, yes, we do crate work with our puppies right from when they move into the nursery.

    Ace doesn’t like crates😂😂 my dog

    • @VanIsleDoodles
      @VanIsleDoodles  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Likely that is because he was not properly exposed to one as an infant. However, it is not difficult to get your older dog to learn to love their crate. It is an instinctive thing for a dog to love being in a crate so not a hard behaviour to teach them and loaded with benefits.

    Do you ever recommend the “soft/fabric” crates ?

    • @VanIsleDoodles
      @VanIsleDoodles  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The soft sided crates are terrific for mature dogs who no longer chew on things. We use soft, collapsible crates frequently when we travel. They are terrific space savers!

      We use a variety of different brands but Vari Kennel is our favourite choice.

    Hello, what crate size do you recommend for a medium/ small standard Labradoodle pup? Thanks

    • @VanIsleDoodles
      @VanIsleDoodles  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there,
      We find we have the best success with a medium size crate. Around 22x22x24. You don't want one that is large as the point is for the dog to feel cozy and secure in their crate.

    Thanks for the awesome video! I am bringing home a medium Australian labradoodle in a few weeks and am wondering, do you divide the crate while the puppies are young so that they don't have accidents? It so, what you use to divide it?

    • @VanIsleDoodles
      @VanIsleDoodles  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is a really good idea to make the crate just large enough for your puppy to comfortable turn around and sleep in and not big enough to find a spot to go pee or poop and be able to move far enough away to sleep. We usually use boxes filled with books to block the crate off if we need to.
      We start crate training our puppies at 5 weeks old so by the time they go home to their families at 9 weeks they don't need any blocking. But if your puppy hasn't had that training then you will want to block him/her for sure.
      What an exciting time for you to be getting a new puppy! Be sure and post a photo once you have your baby home with you.

      Van Isle Doodles thank you so much for your reply! I am getting mine from an ALAA breeder in Alberta, and they start this process early as well so should be okay without a divider by the sounds of it :) will do!

    This is so helpful....my question is will this be the size of crate you will be ordering for our puppies in the Surprise pack? Will you also be getting the crate mats? I appreciate that during this crisis you have offered to put together all of our supplies for our puppies. Will you go over the list with us prior to our pickup?

    • @VanIsleDoodles
      @VanIsleDoodles  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Frances,
      Yes this is the size of crate we have for your puppy. Crate mats too. You can find the list of supplies for your puppy right here on our Covid protocol information sheet vanisledoodles.com/covid-19-protocols/
      We will be going over all the things for your puppy and other items we have available so you know just what we have and so you can pick and choose from the items as to what you would like to add to the essentials that are in the starter package from the link above.

    Thanks , should you put a mat in the crate when its a puppy still, Ive been hearing both yes and no?

    • @VanIsleDoodles
      @VanIsleDoodles  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Greg,
      We put mats in with our puppies right from the first day they are introduced to the crate. The trick is to be sure the crate is not so big that your puppy can go to the bathroom in one part of the crate and then sleep in another. We recommend putting in a box to block the crate so there is just enough room for your puppy to comfortably stretch out to sleep and turn around, but not move around from one spot to another within the crate.
      Good luck!

    how can i buy a crate and a bed from Van Isle Doodles

    • @VanIsleDoodles
      @VanIsleDoodles  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For the crate I would suggest going to your local pet store and asking for one that will fit the size of your dog when they are mature.
      The bed you can order through curatedcanines.com if you are in Canada.

    I brought home my first labradoodle puppy about 3 weeks ago but he's never been crate trained and when we tried, he would go mental. We put treats, food and so on in there but he hates when the doors closed and he gets out of it when we're not in the same room :( really unsure about what to try next

    • @VanIsleDoodles
      @VanIsleDoodles  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there,
      It's a bit of a longer process when your puppy wasn't exposed to a crate while they were with their breeder.
      Do it very gradually. For now, take the door off. Put in extra special high value treats around the crate but not in the crate and praise him enthusiastically whenever he looks at the crate or goes near it to get the treats.
      Once he has that mastered then move the treats a bit closer to the crate and then eventually put some in the crate itself.
      It's going to take lots of time, patience and doing it over and over and over but you'll get there and he'll be glad you made the effort.

      @@VanIsleDoodles Thank you so much! we have 2 dogs (the puppy who is a labradoodle and one mini pinscher rescue who is 4years old) so I've used my other dogs crate for the puppy. Thinking to get another one like the one in your video. Do you think it would be okay for my puppy? He's 4 months old and about 7kg. Thanks!

    • @VanIsleDoodles
      @VanIsleDoodles  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@annaritabasto5125 I think the size is fine. Initially you will want to block off the back part of the crate for overnight sleeping so puppy isn't able to get to one part of the crate to eliminate and another part to sleep. If they are going in the crate though for short periods of time then no need to do that.
      Good luck! You can do this! Keep me posted on your progress!!!

    • @VanIsleDoodles
      @VanIsleDoodles  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@annaritabasto5125 the ones we use are a medium so around 22 x 22 x 24. This is good for a dog up to 55 pounds. You don't want the crate to be big. The whole idea is for it to be cozy and provide security.

    May I ask what size that crate is?

    • @VanIsleDoodles
      @VanIsleDoodles  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Garrett,
      That is a medium crate so depending on the brand they run around 19 - 21 inches by 19 - 21 inches by 20 - 23 inches roughly speaking.
      Unless you need an airline crate you want a crate that is nice and snug for your dog to enjoy, not a big cavernous space.
      You just need to put in a box so when your dog is a puppy, they can't go to an area of the crate to go to the bathroom and sleep in a different part of the crate.
      Hope that helps!

      I LOVE your videos! Thank you for sharing your knowledge on labradoodles❤️. We are getting a mini labradoodle next month, so we are learning as much as we can:).
      How often will an 8 week old puppy need to be let out of crate at night for going potty?

    • @VanIsleDoodles
      @VanIsleDoodles  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jennvolti that really depends on how much crate training your puppy is coming to you with. When our puppies go home they are 9 to 9.5 weeks old and can sleep through the night most of the time for a good 7 to 9 hours without having to get up.
      If, however, your puppy has not had that sort of training before coming to you then you would probably be getting up once a night and then again early in the morning.
      Good luck! I hope your puppy is perfect in every way for you!
