  • New test setup: DJI Airunit on Tripod moving away (2.3km) with DJI Goggles and compare achived BITRATES. I tested with 2 different powersettings (25 and 200mw) and was surprised that even with Stock antennas you could get a connection at 2.3km thru the fog!
    - good line of sight (low fresnell zone intersection)
    - big time fog!!! (reduces range about 50%?)
    - AirUnit got constant 12v power (thru powersupply which was switchable)
    - Maple Wireless L+RHCP TX Antennas (look pretty similar to DJI Stock)
    Tested antennas (use the jumpmarks to find what you're curious for):
    MapleWireless, Deathray 3Turn, 7Turn
    DJI Stock, TrueRC Singularity, Foxeer Lollipop

    If you just want the results (ranking) go to 17:56 (but come on - this was a lot of work to edit!)
    For the guys who want a deeper insight into how DJI FPV works, we have a nice RCG thread going on here: www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?3710715-DJI-FPV-Goggles-which-antennas/page2&perpage=30#post45924707

    With the TrueRC Singularity antennas, the goggles, x-lite and accessories all fit perfectly in a single Turnigy transmitter bag with all antennas on.
    All I need to fly is that bag, a lipo bag and the drone of the day.
    This setup has cut down my "unpack and pack time" drastically. With a battery already strapped in, I'm in the air within 30 seconds, and gone in the same time. Very useful for sktchy spots.
    Exploring with an E-bike and flying when the mood strikes... THAT'S LIFE!

    • @Rcschim
      @Rcschim  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      ha, I also used a taranis bag for some time (the camouflage one - even better for sketchy spots ;)
      Now I use the iFlight backback (once more iFlight ;) - it's not super high quality, but small and light enough. Inside I have a cheap bag to hold the Tango2 and some smaller tools). Goggles stay next to this and theres room for enough batteries and a small drone inside - or a larger drone outside the backpack.
      Maybe you've seen it - I like to explore with my KTM bike - but of course that brings limitations as to where I can drive to (but with less effort and faster)

    • @WeMakeLaw

      @@Rcschim Of course I saw it. Long time subscriber ;-) I was a KTM rider too. (ABP -Racing tuned Duke II ) It was my escape from the city. Now i sincerely prefer an e-bike for that. Hi Mario, I was one of the first to see this video but only today something sparkled in my mind about your testing: When you were testing the omnis and noted an increase in the MBPS when turned about 90 degrees sideways to the signal source, it actually makes sense! Think about it, you noted that most of the work is done by the bottom left antenna and the place you were standing seems to be above the signal source, so when facing the source the antenna actually had its null point aimed to the signal source. When turned 90 degrees to the side the active area of the antenna was facing the signal.

    • @Rcschim
      @Rcschim  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, good idea. I also thought that when I face directly into the dir of tx the omnis don't have good placement whereas the directional antennas are...

      The variable latency is a little strange at first but I hardly notice it anymore unless I’m near the edges of range. But yes, instead of a 20ms range of latency, from 22ms to around 42ms at the edge of reception, it would be awesome and unnoticeable if it were from 22-32ms instead. Or even 32-42ms would be fine with me.

      @pacificnorthwestpilots6050 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @1stslave143
      @1stslave143 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      What latency? I mean if you compare digital with analog even digital has really just a lil bit more latency you can see things much earlier so it compensates it easily

    • @daemn42
      @daemn42 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They will never "fix" the variable latency because it's inherent in the way the video link works. DJI's video link is a two way connection and it retransmits lost packets. The number of retransmits allowed for any given mode (low latency 120fps versus high quality 60fps combined with Focus mode on or off), determines how much time it may take to get the next frame as the signal degrades. The best way to "fix" the latency is to pick the right combination of antennas that provides the best signal for your application to minimize packet loss.

    If you want a really conclusive test I've often thought the best way would be to use a waypoint mission for repeatability and to log the mbit along with the gps co-ordinates so you could create a coverage map for each setup.

    Mario, you always do your best at editing and giving everyone good information. Thank you.
    My question is, have you found that manufacturer antenna ratings seem to be correct? Does the gain/angle on a patch seem the same as what they claim?
    I run the menace patches on the bottom and true rc stubbies on the top. I see a much better all around signal quality this way vs stock dji antennas, it also seemed 4 menace patches worked better, even when flying behind myself. I usually sit in the middle and fly all around myself.
    I want to go with the iflight or axii type antenna because they are easier to store vs the menace patches, I just don't want to loose any performance. Do you think I will?
    You are the go to FPV antenna man!! Thanks again and happy new year.

    • @Rcschim

      Thanks for the nice words!
      Of course not all antenna manufacturers specs are true. Like the C ratings on LIPOS are seldom true. And if you are the only manufacturer with true specs, your antenna seems lame...
      I only have one menace pico patch that I tested - and it did average well compared to other patches. I guess the AxiiHD or iFlight Chrystal will be around the same as your current setup + the convenience. If you need good range in one direction, just remember to tilt your head a bit to the right, so the left antenna is oriented best ;)
      Happy NY too! Happy flying!

    Good stuff!! Doing something so simple yet so revolutionary. Like a magic trick. Once you show us the magic, we're all sitting here going,.. "why didn't I think to just cover the antenna with my hand?". :D
    Now for some critiquing: So now we have the opposite situation as your other videos. Since you used a left and right on your air unit, the Maple Wireless and Foxeer had an unfair advantage. But even with that advantage, Maple doesn't seem any better than any other "patch" system.
    It is interesting that the "best" antenna port is that lower left one. That is the one the FCC docs says is receive only. Maybe it's the most sensitive since it is not transmitting? Covering up the others should basically be making this like an audience mode goggle.
    Seems like I remember you having some ORT helicals. Maybe test with TrueRC Singularities on 3 ports, and a single helical on that one receive-only port. I think your 3 turn death ray will still beat it, but it'd be interesting to see how big the difference is. Might be an option for your everyday bag since you'd only be swapping one antenna out. ,....and now reading in the comments, I see I'm not the only one suggesting this.

      If the bottom left port is receive-only then it might be more capable of a receiver on the sensitivity side, thus might explain why it works better with a higher gain uni patch antenna, would allow for more error correction. I presume the transmit capable receivers can only do half-duplex whereas the bottom left will be always receiving.

    Seeing it only care about lower left antenna port is surprising.
    Can you please do *one* sanity check, and repeat a couple of these tests with the AU having the same polarity antennas? Don't need to make a video. Just want to know if you see any difference.
    I suggest this because DJI's FCC documents say that it uses CDD (Cyclic Delay Diversity) which means it transmits every packet twice with a very small delay between, and the VRX chooses the best of the two copies. It is *possible* that it's transmitting the 2nd packet on the 2nd AU antenna and receiving it on the right side goggles antennas. If that were the case, then in the situation where you have a polarity mismatch between the 2nd AU antenna and the right side goggles antenna, it would make it appear that the right side antennas do nothing.

    • @Rcschim

      Hi Deamon! Nice to see you here!
      The day before this I already tested a lot, there I had 2 stock LHCPs on the AU. Same result. Had this on the goggles with all different sorts of antennas (of course not only the maples which again are L+R).
      Today I wanted to confirm that it's not just my goggles. Had a friend up there with me, 2nd pair of goggles. Problem: if his goggles are not bound to my AU, he's just in Audience mode - there it seems to be equal on all antennaports...
      I'll test more on a different location maybe with more pilots.
      TrueRC also got a lot of feedback that using the LEFT side is better.
      Then Henrik pointed me to this info (maybe you've seen it already). More and quite interesting infos from FCC? testings. Saved it in "our" DJI goggles thread where you already added a lot of great infos!

      I could only test a special variant of the xairs (not part of this test). they are for sure one of the best antennas, but for me the mounting is horrible. the helicals from Henrik are way easier to mount (and even keep them on - at least the 3turn variant). Or just use the iFlight or Axii Patches - for convenience. Flew 3km with iFlight patches yesterday, got to around 30mbit when I turned around (only because of battery, barely made it back with my 1600mah 4cell, but that's a little OT now :)

      The helicals are really my fav antennas - tho I prefer the 3turn since it's plenty range and has a good, wide beam.
      And by DJI v2 you mean the googles - and not the "DJI FPV Racer" drone, right? because this would run on 5.8 AND 2.4 and would need dualband antennas (where I would suggest the ORT digieyes v2 as an upgrade).

    I don`t get why RHCP antennas are tested when the Air Unit use LHCP.

    • @Rcschim
      @Rcschim  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      the Airunit in that case had LHCP AND RHCP antennas (that's the config MapleWireless recommends).
      Thus I could also test RHCP conveniently. I've been assured that both Airunit antennas send out 100% RF

    • @SusiSpecial
      @SusiSpecial 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Rcschim Ah okay. But this makes phyiscal no sense to me because then there are introduce crossover intferences from the other polraization. So omnis would be better in this case. There was an Analog system from AKK also with an RHCP and LHCP TX at the same time and frequency and everyone was complaining that this is counter-productive and also makes physically totally sense. The goal should be to have only LHCP or RHCP to have no crossover talk from the other polarization. Also this limit the results on a LHCP-only Antenna set

    • @Rcschim
      @Rcschim  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SusiSpecial I also thought that this would be an dis-advantage for the LHCP only antennas - but in my test it wasnt.
      In bando-flying with many reflections you end up with L and R RF waves anyways, because every time a signal bounces off the wall it changes pol.
      in this test I just wanted to treat the MapleAntennas the right way (as the vendor suggests with his L+R tx antennas).
      To me it showed that this didnt give him any benefit.
      I just didnt have the time to drive down there, swap TX antennas and up again (20-30mins lost).
      Sunlight is very scarce in my sparetime now :(
      Anyhows, I think we can conclude: with somewhat decent antennas (like the iFlight for example, or the 3Turns) I get really good and consistent range and signal for me to fly very confident around - explore, fly between houses, behind even...
