Finally a Greek teaching the pronunciation of Greek letters. Shocking how the USA and UK websites have got it wrong and still pretend to know the actual pronunciation. So glad I chanced upon this video. Going to take me a whole lot of retraining.
I am pissed of when I see such a simple word as the mathematical symbol π pronounced wrong all the time.It shouldn't be pronounced as pie, but as the letter p in English
Nice, a simple and easy teaching of the alphabet. We are going 3 months in Kalamata, so we need to be able to read, to be able to make simple sentences , ask for a bottle of water, ask how much it costs ... between duolingo and videos i'm sure we'll be able to manage a little little bit
I just found this video and it’s so helpful because I am learning Greek, and I find these are beneficial ways to study the alphabet to familiarize how letters look and sound in words to better memorize them 🙏🏻
thanks and happy you liked it, FYI: If you want to learn more, with extra videos, then you can also purchase the Alphabet multi-media eBook, which will give you the total picture, extra sentences, exercises, audio and videos for the combination of vowels and consonants. Thank you, and happy you like the video. Good luck with your Greek Language Journey! When you know the Greek alphabet, you can also continue with our free eBooks at www.omilo.com/ebooks/
thanks for your nice comment. If you want to learn more, and also have access to the next two videos, as well as audio and written files, then take a look at the Aphabet Multi-media eBook : omilo.com/publications/the-modern-greek-alphabet/
I was just interested how to pronounce greek alphabet. Well thank ya for this lesson. Now i understand that it is much easier than to learn english. Never knew that greek and russian have so much in common!
indeed! But if you would have studied ancient Greek in Greece, you would also have learned a different pronunciation than abroad. Out of Greece they use the "Erasmus pronunciation" for Ancient Greek, which is not used in Greece, and a big discussion between Professors Ancient Greek in various countries :-) Anyway, about the modern Greek there is no discussion, it is what you hear in the video. All the best
I will be traveling to Greece in late August 2021 and am trying to learn some basic Greek. This lesson was very helpful and I'm trying to spell my family member's names in Greek. For example, my name is Parag which phonetically is spelled Puh-raa-g. Based on your lessons, I think I understand how to spell in Greek, but I'm struggling with correct way to spell uh in Puh portion of my phonetic name. I am also struggling with phonetic Greek spelling of my son Ryan or Rra-yu-n. I would appreciate your guidance. Efhaarissto!

Anyone else find this while trying to learn how to pronounce Omicron? (I've heard so many variations.) It's kind of amazing how many Greek letters we English speakers are completely mispronouncing!
kalimera, for people not speaking or learning Greek, it is normal they have no idea how "omikron " is actually pronounced in Greek, and many do not even realize it is a Greek letter. The same goes for beta, delta, etc... However, if somebody is interested in how this Greek letter omikron, or several other letters of the Greek alphabet are pronounced in Greek, by native teachers, then this video will teach you the real thing :-) Many greetings from Athens. www.omilo.com
Happy the video was helpful. The "accent" is needed in every word, that has more than one syllable. And every vowl with "accent", is exactly where you need to stress the word. So it helps you to know how to pronounce the word, and where to "stress" the word. more info and extra videos related to the Greek Alphabet, are all included in our eBook, which you can find at omilo.com/publications/the-modern-greek-alphabet/
Thank you for this video! Im currently in Greece and im trying to learn the alphabet to better read the signs and this is so helpful!! I was just wondering what the difference between I, H and Y was? They all sounded very similar to me
Kalisprea Jona, we wish you good luck with the Greek Alphabet. For sure your stay in Greece will be so much nicer when you can read Greek. About your questions, the I, H and Y have exactly the same pronunciation, so no difference, but the spelling is different. So depending where the letter is in the word, or in which other combination of letters it is used, you will need one of the three...But do not worry about it for the time being..just remember they have the same pronunciation. (like in English "eat" and "meet"...same pronunciation, different spelling...)
Thank you. Here in USA there is a movement to change the Biblical Greek pronunciation to the modern Greek pronunciation. Quite the debate. I do not know how to find the "correct" pronunciation but I trust yours because of your accent and channel name.
@@OmiloHellas I am mainly interested in the Greek language as it relates to the Greek New Testament but the correct pronunciation is critical for the kids. I live in a town called Ypsilanti. Many cities and towns are named after Indian (native American) tribes, chiefs, etc. ( and so on). A lot of the rivers and lands are the names given by the Indians. I thought Ypsilanti was an Indian name. Boy was I wrong. There is an American movie called my Greek wedding. Have you seen it? It is really funny.
@@OmiloHellas I am embarrassed to ask, but I am going to anyway. Would it be possible for you to make a fast simple video of you reading John 3: 16, 17 so we can memorize it in the Greek. No, they are two complete different letters, and pronounced differently. However, for a non-Greek, it might sound the same...however, when pronouncing the letters, the place of your tongue is at a different point, and for Greeks there is never any confusion between those 2 letters

The English "th" sound is the Thita ( θ), and the delta is in between "d" and "th"...needs practice, but there is a difference. The "d" also exists, but is written as "vt", and explained in other videos or during the Alphabet course (the combinations of vowels and consonants) www.omilo.com/course/greek-alphabet-course/
yes they indeed sound exactly the same, but for some words/verbs you need the Omega, and for other words the Omikron, so it is mostly important to know for spelling, and grammar.
