  • Moutain Jam, the Allman Brothers classic. In March of 2011 John Scofield guested with the Allman Brothers Band during their Beacon run. Although he had known and played with Warren, Derek and Oteil before, this was the first time he played with the Allman Brothers.
Thanks to Butch Trucks these concerts were streamed, and we have some extraordinary moments preserved for music history. Although I was in Europe, I felt like I had a front row seat. I upscaled the original 480p, and this version is a considerable improvement.
As luck would have it, I did an extended interview with John Scofield(one of the most respected jazz guitarist on the scene today) just days after this concert. It was done especially for blues/rock fans. Naturally we spoke about the ABB, a portion of that is included after Liz Reed video linked at the end of this video.
Here is a link to the entire interview in MP3 audio form:

for Allman Brothers fans, you will also find interviews with Derek Trucks, Jaimoe, Chuck Leavell, Oteil Burbridge, Scott Sharrard , Devon Allman, Susan Tedeschi, Jimmy Herring, and Jerry Jemmott.

I like the Derek's and Warren's smiles as they appreciate Sco's interpretation

I love that too, if you listen to the interview at the end of the Liz Reed clip, I mentioned that about them smiling and you can ear what he said about it.

I was there, it was amazing! Scofield played like he'd been in the band for years. When I was leaving the venue, I could hear folks asking who was that guy & shaking their heads in amazement.

Thanks Alan for watching and taking the time to comment. Glad you got to see this Mt. Jam clip. The Liz' reed clip with Scofield gets a lot of traffic, but very few have found this Mt. Jam clip. He was getting acclimated on Liz Reed, but he totally nailed it on this clip, just brilliant.

In 2009 Scofield played Alicante. The audience was not happy. His keyboard player Joey DeFrancesco stole the show, well deserved, RIP. Scofield later admitted he had mental problems in that period. I think he needed this ABB moment to get back on his feet. The show I saw late 2013 was great. He'd found his inspiration back. Thanks to the almighty Allman Brothers Band! (ps. I'm waiting for a Allwoman Sisters Band!)

Have you watched the clip where Sco and Warren Haynes sit in with the Dregs (or maybe it was an edition of Morse's solo group)? There is a point, while Scofield is taking a solo (I believe it was during a rendition of "Crossroads"), and Steve Morse made a gesture like that of someone bowing/praying to someone out of deep respect! For a player of Morse's stature to show that kind of awestruck response - at one of his own shows, in particular - says volumes about Scofield's abilities as a player. And I feel at least that sort of response, every time I hear Scofield play. He's a humble and committed master player!

      @@jeffhubbard9951 I haven't, but I will now!
And Derek is becoming that revered presence too--if you didn't watch the Jeff Beck tribute concert, you should! Derek and Susan played The Sky is Crying with Clapton and the rest of the band. As Derek was finishing his incredible solo (aren't they all?) the bassist, forgive me for not knowing his name, looked over at him with genuine awe and respect. Not to Clapton. To Derek. Incredible moment.

Spectacular! John is insane with ABB, like an original member. From a jazz master to a blues/rock master. I think Dickey would've loved to jam with him. Thank you kindly for sharing!

    • @jeffhubbard9951

I can't disagree any more emphatically. Scofield, shit... It's funny, because I was just thinking, as I was watching his solo, how completely confident his timing was, within the groove. He is frankly such a master of rhythm that he can sort of bend time to his will. And, no disrespect, but I very often find that folks who haven't listened to a lot of true jazz improvisation don't seem to "get" Scofield's playing, particularly the way he interacts with tunes harmonically. They'll go on about how out or amelodic (angular is another term they use a lot) his soloing is; but, the truth is that his knowledge of and ear for crafting lines is so unique and sophisticated that it takes some time to really hear it properly - unless you've been listening to, say, Joe Henderson or Wayne Shorter for years. In that case, you should be set!
