Was just telling a buddy of mine that Epiphone is far beyond their days of a cheaper "alternative" guitar. They're great axes that are just lucky enough to share rights with Gibson! Continually blown away by Epi; bye-bye Gibby.
Yeah, these days cheap guitars are not necessarily bad guitars. In fact you can spend 300 or so on a squier classic vibe or an epiphone like this one or a les Paul and they will do you well and sound and play good enough for gigging and recording with.
Used to be a PRS SE guy because I always heard they are better quality than an Epiphone at a similar price point... As soon as I finally got an opportunity to play an Epiphone, I changed my mind. I now don't own a single PRS guitar, just squier, Epiphone and one American pro ii tele which is obviously my baby but in honesty the quality on my Epiphone is better than the American Fender, however the tone on that tele is unbeatable at a lower price point of epis
Fantastic review. Watched a few reviews as I was trying to decide on this or the Les Paul Special II with the P 90s. Your review helped with the decision to purchase. Thank you, I thoroughly enjoy your videos. I am a 54 year old that has sang in working bands since my teens. I only play guitar at home but I have a sizable collection of PRS, Gibson, Fenders, Carvins, Music Mans and Epiphones. Your videos are both entertaining and informative. I’m always looking for new stuff to order and after watching this review I will have to get a new Epiphone SG. I’ve had older Epiphone SGs that I don’t think were as nice as their new stuff.

Great review. Beautiful guitar but I don't think my OCD could accept the chewed up bridge posts on a new guitar! The black napkins at the end was great. I am a huge Zappa fan and loved his SG tone!

I just recently picked up the sparkling red version of this same SG from the Gibson Garage in Nashville and I am seriously impressed with it! I own several Epiphones and definitely agree the quality has been getting better and better of late (and I hold SG'S up to a hard standard...my dad has a 63 or 64 Junior) New to your channel but I've really enjoyed the videos I've watched so far! P90s are great pickups. I have this guitar with the humbuckers. It's been an adjustment with the neck width, coming from primarily Fenders. Nice enough for the price. Mine had some issues, like loose frets.
My faded Pelham blue Epi SG special arrived yesterday! My first go at that body style and I love it already. Finish is top notch, nut cut perfect, action and intonation spot on. My only gripe and I wonder why no reviews I've seen even mention it, but the pickup routes are terrible imo. Two totally different shapes lol...looks like a round peg in a square hole. It's something I didn't notice until I got one in my hands and it's all I can see now. Loves it anyways lol

I believe this is already mentioned in previous comments , so I'm just reiterating. To adjust the hight of the wraparound bridge, it's best to loosen the strings and remove tension. I've owned 2 Gibson SG specials and that's what I learned quick.
Great review. Not only does it sound very good, thanks to its P90s, it's got the aesthetics with pelham blue and close to Gibson headstock. A my generation guitar for a my generation lad. A keeper.
I had the same problem with a PRS SE Paul’s Guitar I bought from GuitarGuitar. Luckily, the post screws were brass (chrome I believe on the more expensive version), so I was able to file and polish out the problem, but poor show from the staff of major guitar retailers. Your slowly converting me to SG`s, my first guitar was a Westfield SG apparently made by a Scottish manufacture who have now liquidated, would be great if you could do a comparison of 1990`s affordable SG`s and present day , the Westfield still sounds great by the way !!
I just received my new Epiphone SG Traditional Pro in sparkling burgundy yesterday. It came in the original factory packing and looks fantastic. If I pay for a new one, it better be a virgin or it’s going back.
Really liking this one, epiphones are really putting me off of getting a gibson with how good they feel these days. I get what you mean about not liking the sparkle burgundy, if an sg is red it has to be worn cherry no question. Thanks for the video, just ordered one of these for christmas
I have it and it's been my number 1 for over a year and I love it still. I have a Gibson SG (2016 Standard), a Fender Brent Mason Mod Telecaster, a Squire classic vibe 50s in Olympic White with a Yamaha pick up in the neck position and this big boy! Also a Squire Start
Nice review as always- I have the pucker Gibson one of these. So easy & light to play, you don't have to try too hard. Way too expensive , but came with hardshell case , which sits in the attic with the other cases. My issue was the locking nuts on the tuners were all loose & rattling - Gibsons Q.C. was still depressed in 2019! Your Epiphone was great value, but very shocked at that screwdriver damage ! You are very tolerant. Thanks once again , catch you next time.
Thanks Eminor, for sure the extra money you pay for a Gibson is not for additional QC!! For the price of the Epiphone you can excuse a few things but there's really nothing wrong with it apart from the shop induced horrors. Cheers for supporting the channel!
I just got mine yesterday, I bought it partially based on your review here. Her name is Abigail, and she’s a keeper! She already has reflector knobs, too! She wasn’t set up as well as yours, the truss rod was completely slack in fact, but about an hour’s set up work put her right. .....and as love the sparkly Faded Pelham Blue, though it’s almost indistinguishable from the Inverness Green on my Epi 335.
I still like to go into stores and pick a guitar off the shelf. Yes, you run the risk of it being knocked from being played in the shop. But you also ensure it’s not a dud or coming from the manufacturer with imperfections in the finish, frets etc.
I find that if you take the tension off the strings that a coin (a US nickel or maybe a UK 5p coin) works very well to adjust the posts without causing the damage you have here. I hope you got a big discount for the messed up posts and ding in the back of the head stock. By the way, your review again caused me to buy another guitar, just like this one., that should be here in about 10 days. Cheers.

Pelham blue was a Cadillac color in the 60’s. Lot of metallic colors on guitars come from the car industry. Put an order out for one. Should be here tomorrow. Can’t wait 🙂 Couldn’t resist anymore.
I managed to score the "Modern" version of this, which is the same guitar, just with the "Batwing" pickup, in a *very* sexy "Iverness Green" color for $230 USD off someone that I suspect doesn't appreciate a good guitar! Thankfully, this little rock machine is with it's rightful master now!

Colin in a sea of bubble wrap, sort of funny. Colin you did a great job of keeping your composure. Almost comedic how much wrap those guys put on there. They made sure there was great protection. Too bad the guy didn't use a screw driver that had some purchase. Dang. That looks like a fine color though. Wish it had some humbuckers since I have a guitar with P-90s already.

Nice review. I almost want to buy one of those. But I decided to get a fat fender neck for my classic vibe Tele instead. But it’s a beautiful SG. Why did they send it wrapped in bubble? Yeah we mostly all just buy online. Where is the box??? Why? I can’t believe it! Epiphone did a fabulous job with this one. I’ve never played an SG. But I’ve secretly wanted one since about 1969. Don’t denigrate it just because it’s made in China and inexpensive. It’s very nice.

If you look at the base of the adjustment slot on a Gibson tailpiece (I assume it's the same on Epiphones), you'll see that it's curved, not flat. It's designed to be adjusted with a coin, not a screwdriver.
I bought one. The good: The Pelham Blue is closer to the original (I had one) and the logo inlay is Mother of Pearl (Gibson version is just a decal). The neck was very straight and frets well done. The finish was flawless. The P90s are very, very good! The bad: The neck angle is off and it leaves the stud bridge too far from the body even when strings are set at their lowest. The fingerboard looks and feels fine, but the dye or something stained my finger tips black for weeks despite numerous attempts to clean it. The different: The neck is nice and wide, but it is a shallow "D" taper that is nothing like the original Gibsons were. Doesn't feel bad, but I don't play it often or long because I have other guitars with a more comfortable profile. All in all, it's not a bad guitar, but with a little more care with the neck angle and a rounder taper, it could be a great guitar!
So now I am going through your channel watching all of SG content, glad you have some, along with the 20-50 SG's I imagine you have since they are your fave. BTW I just had a Nestle Aero chocolate bar which is hard to find in the states but was introduced to them when I lived in the UK.

I just picked one of these up for $250 I've always played american-made guitars either Gibson or fender my wife just got an inspired by Gibson ES-335 and to be honest with you it sounded better than the Gibson's that were in the shop anyway so I found this little guy online same color as yours
Just picked the Burgundy version of this up at Sweetwater in their showroom (which I highly recommend visiting), and I’m pretty happy with it so far. I’ve relied on your reviews for a couple of guitars and I’ve yet to disagree with you.
I have a 2022 Gibson SG special in black....its fantastic! I bought it from Sweetwater/ Despite the video above, get one! He implies above that hes playing a Gibson but its an Epiphone. Trust me save up and get the Gibson!
I absolutely love my Epiphone SG pro in white, with humbucker that can be split using the push pull pots. It’s every bit as nice as my Gibson Cherry SG special with Bigsby. I may put one on the Epiphone. The Gibson had those ridiculous robot tuners on it , very annoying.
Watching in Oct '24, this has got to be one of your favourite guitars, Col? It's survived a few culls....! I've got one, same colour and year. Great bang for the buck. I normally use 10s on Gibson scale length guitars, but I put 9s on mine to take some of the tension off the bridge posts and the body inserts. Have to say, I actually prefer the 9s both for feel and acoustic sound 😉
I have the same guitar. Epiphone quality has come up to par, the fit & finish is very good. Fretwork was very good & the neck was straight. The pickup switch was the only weak part. I will replace it with a higher quality piece.
I just got mine and the switch is very loose (wobbly) in the middle position. Is this the case with yours? It's my first guitar with this kind of switch so I'm not sure if it's supposed to be like that. BTW, out of the factory setup is terrible. High action, neck needs adjustment and one of the small intonation screws fell out, luckily found it in the box.
@@vsdln Hey Vanja! Sorry yours needs setting up... mine had probably already been done by the shop before they shipped so I had no problem. Glad you found that screw though! - I had same with the LP Special we reviewed so it's quite common problem. Cheaper switches can be a bit loose and wobble... not the best but not that unusual. Its a reason why these are £300 not £3000 I guess! Play it a lot and enjoy!
The color is gorgeous! I got one of the first epi TV yellow specials when they hit and one of the tail piece stud head was gouged up like yours. I just shook my head in disgust.

I wish they made this exactly the same as my Epi G400 worn cherry but with P90's of course. I would get one for sure if they did. The blue is pretty nice though, but the binding is not for me. I really enjoyed your playing, very good. Thanks for the review.

I have it and it's been my number 1 for over a year and I love it still. I have a Gibson SG (2016 Standard), a Fender Brent Mason Mod Telecaster, a Squire classic vibe 50s in Olympic White with a Yamaha pick up in the neck position and this big boy! Also a Squire Start

Nice review as always- I have the pucker Gibson one of these. So easy & light to play, you don't have to try too hard.
Way too expensive , but came with hardshell case , which sits in the attic with the other cases.
My issue was the locking nuts on the tuners were all loose & rattling - Gibsons Q.C. was still depressed in 2019!
Your Epiphone was great value, but very shocked at that screwdriver damage ! You are very tolerant.

I just got mine yesterday, I bought it partially based on your review here. Her name is Abigail, and she’s a keeper! She already has reflector knobs, too!
She wasn’t set up as well as yours, the truss rod was completely slack in fact, but about an hour’s set up work put her right.
.....and as love the sparkly Faded Pelham Blue, though it’s almost indistinguishable from the Inverness Green on my Epi 335.

I still like to go into stores and pick a guitar off the shelf. Yes, you run the risk of it being knocked from being played in the shop. But you also ensure it’s not a dud or coming from the manufacturer with imperfections in the finish, frets etc.
I was looking at the red one but once I remembered I have a surf green strat I think the Pelham blue would match it nicely

Just got one. I love it. Putting a Seymour Duncan Custom in the neck and a Vintage in the bridge soon, but it does sound great stock.
I find that if you take the tension off the strings that a coin (a US nickel or maybe a UK 5p coin) works very well to adjust the posts without causing the damage you have here. I hope you got a big discount for the messed up posts and ding in the back of the head stock. By the way, your review again caused me to buy another guitar, just like this one., that should be here in about 10 days. Cheers.

You use a quarter to adjust the post up or down , it is softer than steel and will not burr the slots at all.
Your melody sounds a lot like Iron Maiden. Love it!
Pelham blue was a Cadillac color in the 60’s. Lot of metallic colors on guitars come from the car industry.

Colin in a sea of bubble wrap, sort of funny. Colin you did a great job of keeping your composure. Almost comedic how much wrap those guys put on there. They made sure there was great protection. Too bad the guy didn't use a screw driver that had some purchase. Dang. That looks like a fine color though. Wish it had some humbuckers since I have a guitar with P-90s already.

Nice review. I almost want to buy one of those. But I decided to get a fat fender neck for my classic vibe Tele instead. But it’s a beautiful SG. Why did they send it wrapped in bubble? Yeah we mostly all just buy online. Where is the box??? Why? I can’t believe it! Epiphone did a fabulous job with this one. I’ve never played an SG. But I’ve secretly wanted one since about 1969. Don’t denigrate it just because it’s made in China and inexpensive. It’s very nice.

If you look at the base of the adjustment slot on a Gibson tailpiece (I assume it's the same on Epiphones), you'll see that it's curved, not flat. It's designed to be adjusted with a coin, not a screwdriver.
I can see what your saying and that might have worked in 1954 when it was designed but none of our coins fit now...

I bought one.
The good:
The Pelham Blue is closer to the original (I had one) and the logo inlay is Mother of Pearl (Gibson version is just a decal). The neck was very straight and frets well done. The finish was flawless. The P90s are very, very good!
The bad:
The neck angle is off and it leaves the stud bridge too far from the body even when strings are set at their lowest. The fingerboard looks and feels fine, but the dye or something stained my finger tips black for weeks despite numerous attempts to clean it.
The different:
The neck is nice and wide, but it is a shallow "D" taper that is nothing like the original Gibsons were. Doesn't feel bad, but I don't play it often or long because I have other guitars with a more comfortable profile.
All in all, it's not a bad guitar, but with a little more care with the neck angle and a rounder taper, it could be a great guitar!
I love the colour... I think it way better than the current Gibson sparkley one. Neck is shallow but easy to get used to I think? Cheers!
I had the same problem with the neck angle with an older Epiphone SG Special, and it was my only and sadly reason to sell this beauty...
So now I am going through your channel watching all of SG content, glad you have some, along with the 20-50 SG's I imagine you have since they are your fave. BTW I just had a Nestle Aero chocolate bar which is hard to find in the states but was introduced to them when I lived in the UK.
Yes I do have several SG's! ;).... this one in particular is a current favourite and one of the cheapest but it's brilliant!

I just picked one of these up for $250 I've always played american-made guitars either Gibson or fender my wife just got an inspired by Gibson ES-335 and to be honest with you it sounded better than the Gibson's that were in the shop anyway so I found this little guy online same color as yours

I have a 2022 Gibson SG special in black....its fantastic! I bought it from Sweetwater/ Despite the video above, get one! He implies above that hes playing a Gibson but its an Epiphone. Trust me save up and get the Gibson!

I absolutely love my Epiphone SG pro in white, with humbucker that can be split using the push pull pots. It’s every bit as nice as my Gibson Cherry SG special with Bigsby. I may put one on the Epiphone.
The Gibson had those ridiculous robot tuners on it , very annoying.
Watching in Oct '24, this has got to be one of your favourite guitars, Col? It's survived a few culls....! I've got one, same colour and year. Great bang for the buck. I normally use 10s on Gibson scale length guitars, but I put 9s on mine to take some of the tension off the bridge posts and the body inserts. Have to say, I actually prefer the 9s both for feel and acoustic sound 😉

I have the same guitar. Epiphone quality has come up to par, the fit & finish is very good. Fretwork was very good & the neck was straight. The pickup switch was the only weak part. I will replace it with a higher quality piece.

I just got mine and the switch is very loose (wobbly) in the middle position. Is this the case with yours? It's my first guitar with this kind of switch so I'm not sure if it's supposed to be like that. BTW, out of the factory setup is terrible. High action, neck needs adjustment and one of the small intonation screws fell out, luckily found it in the box.
@@vsdln Hey Vanja! Sorry yours needs setting up... mine had probably already been done by the shop before they shipped so I had no problem. Glad you found that screw though! - I had same with the LP Special we reviewed so it's quite common problem. Cheaper switches can be a bit loose and wobble... not the best but not that unusual. Its a reason why these are £300 not £3000 I guess! Play it a lot and enjoy!

Cheers man! Tuning stability on Epiphones is much better than on Gibsons because they use graphtec style nuts 👍
The color is gorgeous! I got one of the first epi TV yellow specials when they hit and one of the tail piece stud head was gouged up like yours. I just shook my head in disgust.

I wish they made this exactly the same as my Epi G400 worn cherry but with P90's of course. I would get one for sure if they did. The blue is pretty nice though, but the binding is not for me. I really enjoyed your playing, very good. Thanks for the review.
