  • NK has a well-balanced collection of both iconic and reliable watches that male collectors favor. The balance of the collection is topped by an excellent example of an Art Deco style watch that can be used in a wide variety of roles. ArtSci covers the general topics of high horology watches, watch movements, purchasing watches, judging the value of a watch and its movements and understanding the history of different watches and watch brands that collectors cherish.

    NK’s collection is a lesson in restraint. NK knows exactly what he likes and has insightfully chosen four very fine watches. The Reverso is smart enough to serve as a dress watch for virtually any lifestyle. I admire NK’s collection just as it is and for what it is.

    Bill. Thank you very much for your review and appreciation of my collection. I bought the gmt blnr because I fell in love with the color combo the moment I saw it. After wearing it for approx 1year, I realize it looks slightly bulky on my wrist. I might consider upgrading this gmt with one of your suggestion (btw all others I will never sell). I like both the patek and VC. But damn i love that fp journe of yours. And as few of the comments I see here, I must admit that my choices were somewhat driven by popularity and resale value. Now for my final upgrade, I want the choice to be just for the pure love of the piece and nothing else. In saying that I must be lying to myself if I bought VC or patek.. one day when I'm ready, I will get that fp journe and I'll thank you for introducing it to me.

      Hey NK! You will get no disagreement from me about an FP Journe! They're magic. While, most want to get the Chronomètre Bleu, with the tantalum case, may I suggest instead the Chronomètre Souverain in gold or platinum. Here's why, (1) they tend to cost less because the Chronomètre Bleus are in such high demand. The Chronomètre Souverains have a power reserve indicator, which for a manual wind watch is a must (in my highly biased opinion), they're 40mm instead of 39mm (Bleu), and the Chronomètre Souverain (platinum) is the watch that F.P. Journe gave to George Daniels (FP's mentor)--which sort of tells me that FP thinks pretty highly of the CS. Don't get me wrong, the Bleu is great too, and it is certainly worth pursuing. Good hunting! Kindest regards, Bill

    Very nice collection. I agree with the "cherry" on top of it Bill mentioned. But I think the Reverso handles the dress watch. I would go for something unique and grail worthy--a Journe, a Lange , etc.

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey SP, NK came to the same wise conclusion...an FP Journe. Speaking of FP Journes, I can think of at least one budding provost who could use one...no names....Cheers, Bill

    NK's collection is a great and though I am not a Rolex Fan, but I still admire that two Rolex. Sure, for the prices of that two Rolex, can have more options to choose around. The JLC reverso is the one I like best, though it is a current limited model tribute to its 1930" original. In future, if he got a chance to grab a good condition original vintage 1930s, it will be the best of the best selection

    Next step recommendation for this collection is an A. Lange & Sohne ... something like a Grande Lange, or similar? A. Lange is the next higher rung above his Rolex and JLC, and seems to be in the aesthetic vein of what this guy likes.

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think, PV, that's an excellent choice. A. Lange & Söhne is certainly a step in the right direction. Cheers, Bill

    very nice collection... almost every base is covered. great iconic models. I would agree that he could go AP, VC or Patek possibly in the future. an AP Royal Oak would be a classic addition if you like that kind of look.
    Cheers

      @watchartsci  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Cap'n Zed--a great comment! There are some excellent APs out there, but for the same reason I didn't mention an Overseas or Nautilus, I'd probably jump in another direction than the RO simply because the collection is already well represented with Sports. (I know...the RO a sport?!) The Jules Audemars line looks very similar to the Calatravas and Patrimonies, and provide great quality at a comparatively bargain price. What do you think? Kindest regards, Bill

      @CaptainZed 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      WatchArtSci you are correct as keeps the collection more focused. I saw some Pateks and APs at a local preowned watch shop. While I have Rolex, Omega, Panerai & JLC watches, I could see myself eventually consolidating or saving towards a Patek one day. Thanks for your videos.

  • @chr1s60

    Nice collection. No doubt it is filled with very popular watches, but some good selections. I really like the no date sub instead of the date version. And I always love a collection that contains any JLC piece. I would recommend going with a less popular brand/model for the next watch. To stick with a Rolex he could grab a less popular model like the Air King. To go with a different brand I would say something like a Piaget.

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chr1s60 Yeah, a Piaget is a good idea. NK had a better idea than we both did! An FP Journe! No argument here....Cheers, Bill

    Professor, Nice video some new blending effects.Regarding your watch please check with your Journe boutique the possibility of changing the two crowns to the new improved type which is much easier to wind and adjust. Mr. Journe not only makes good watches (In my opinion) but he also keep improving old ones as well. The factory recommended I do so for my 38mm watch (Résonance).

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jaber! Guess what? I did exactly as you suggested yesterday. My watch is on the way to Geneva at this moment. My hope is that anything new since the watch (mine) was produced in 2002 will be added, except for the brass bases and bridges in the movement. The new ones are gold, but I like my brass ones--only about 350 like mine were made. Also, I want to keep the same dial. In about 3 or 4 months, I'll find out. 38mm--the rare ones! تفضلوا بقبول فائق الاحترام Bill

    Nice review and collection!
    I was thinking about recommending adding some color in pack but I have a feeling he is a white metal + blue chip brand kind of guy.
    So I'd think about a Daytona steal as his next piece.

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Amintas, certain Daytonas would add a spot of color, and in part, that's why I recommended a Calatrava or Patrimony. With two iconic choices in the Sub and GMT II, why another Rolex? Another interesting choice along the lines of upping the level and adding something in a dress watch, what do you think of a Parmigiani Fleurier Kalpa Forma Grande? They're about the same price (@$3-4k) as the other watches in the collection and a white face would add some color. Cheers, Bill

    I love the collection. But as you know Bill I am partial to the Rolex and Tudor. I see a personal touch in the no date Sub. (I guess that is because I have an Exp 1 which has no date). The Batman GMT is not for you Bill. I see you with a white dial Milgauss. You don't have to worry with the date. Let me know when you get it!

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Dallas. Yeah, I can see me with a Polar Milgauss. I'd freak out the squirrels in my back yard with the cool lightning bolt second hand. I've had bad luck trying to save up for a Rolex...something else always catches my eye. Wait until you see what I've got in the wings! Big surprise...if I can get it. Cheers, Bill

    This is a great collection counting only the most popular luxury models. It is also a kind of sad collection, because I doubt if NK chose his watches because of the high popularity (confirmation of his taste by others?), or because he really likes them. I am missing a personal touch here. Great watches, don't get me wrong. Wished I owned at least one of them really, but I am missing his personal taste in his watch collection.

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hey CC! I think the individuality in this collection is in the subtle choices of the watches. They're all iconic, but the details is where you can see the watch connoisseur that I think NK is. The 1831 movement in the Speedy, the Batman color combination in the GMT II and the choice of the 1931 model of the Reverso is where you see a collector who gets it just right. I do see your point in what at first blush appears to be 'standard good collection,' but by looking a little deeper, much is revealed about a very precise and knowing taste. Kindest regards, Bill

      Cedar Canoe Good point. i do admit your point is quite true. But regardless of what drove me to buy these pieces, i dont intend to sell the sub, reverso and the speedmaster because i love them even more now. considering to sell the gmt and get something more tasteful and personal. maybe a fp journe like the one Bill has? lol

    This collection looks as if he watched a lot of Archie Luxury videos. All of his watches are very nice, but do they show his ideas and styles? I hope he is buying for his own taste and not for the popular choices.

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, J.R., those are the Archie recommended watches, but they're recommended by most others as well. Besides, I think that NK made some very judicious choices within that context. I especially like the Batman style GMT II and the 1931 Reverso. Remember, it's not just the watch brand, but the ones within a brand selected. I would not recommend a Frédérique Constant in gold because they used gold plating; however, a Frédérique Constant in stainless steel is a good buy using an in-house movement that is quite good. Now, you and Rhea get to work and find something exciting! Cheers, Bill

      WatchArtSci At least he didnt do a gold sub. He picked some of the best of breed of the Rolex brand. I never have been a fan of the MOTM. I think there are better
      valued chronos to be had ... Breguet XX or even some vintage Minerva or Lemania watches. MOTM is agood durable piece and certainly not a bad choice ... but Omega itself has ruined the Speedy with so many models and "special editions".

      J.R. Regenold Lol. Yes i do watch Archie time to time. Speedmaster was definately a piece that grew on me from his 10 millionth recommendation. Although i actually like it very much now that i have had it for few years. definately the one that i have most fun with changing out the strap!

      Ryvr, that's one way of putting it, but I'd probably characterize it otherwise. Archie (or Paul) is in a rough patch in his life right now, and anything attributed to him may sound snarky; and I know you didn't mean to sound that way. However, to err on the side of caution, I'd just way that NK's collection is just a good solid guy's collection. Kindest regards, Bill

    I think bang per buck VC Traditionalle www.vacheron-constantin.com/en2/watches/traditionnelle/traditionnelle-traditionnelle-82172-000R-9382.html or Patek Calatrava 5296R-010 the Patrimony with a date is in between those too...any way he is a winner.

      Hey Don, you won't get an argument from me about the VC Traditionalle. A great choice, and it ticks on the same 4400 movement that's in my 21 -- Historiques American 1921. Also, you can find great prices on the Traditionalle at places like Jomashop.com. Cheers, Bill
