Thanks for all of these helpful videos. I am an apprentice boilermaker and have my first 6g test coming up next week at a nuclear power plant. I have been reviewing your videos over and over, and it is easy to take what you say and apply it when I practice. I just purchased a few tig fingers and I am sure I will be getting a lot of use out of it over the coming years. Thanks again!!!
Your videos, even after years of schooling and handfuls of different instructors/people in the trade giving me advice, still help me! Can never have too many different ways to approach a weld! Thank you!
Thanks Jody, I never realized that these tests existed, really appreciate you sharing this "Art". It is amazing what you welders can do! Something that many laymen would never realize.
I made my first 6G practice today on a 2 inch pipe and used this tips. The pinkie-thumb prop was very good, i could weld 1/3 of the pipe on each side with perfecresults and a easy weave after beading the top bevel sides! Thanks again Jody! You helped me get through bevel by recognize sound and the keyhole! Im about to get my 6g IW diploma soon and these tips made the lot difference! Im gonna try 6g on TIG with these Tig-finger from your shop too, very handy for pipes, i like to be lazy and not to free hand alot ^^ Thanks again Jody!
Thanks for the reply and info Jody I enjoy learning from your videos . I've been welding on and off for 25 years yet I'm still learning and have picked up quite a few tips from your vids thank you for your time and effort it is much appreciated ! gotta pick up a couple of your tig fingers soon !
Last night I found some old scrap and some small rods to practice your finger collapse technique. By the time I covered the scrap with beads my welds were crisp and straight. Thanks Jody
Its totally awesome that jody did this video, especially with the free hand TIG (Heli-Arc) welding. In standard test that we boilermakers have to take You have to free hand all of the tig...if you walk that cup they'll send you on your way with no work and no pay! This video is so cool to me because even though walking the cup great for huge pipe etc. it is absolutely impossible with boiler tubes. Thanks again Jody the videos are the BEST i have ever seen anywhere Aaron
Will be going back to school in January and I will definitely be getting the tig finger for it. Will be refering to these videos ALOT for sure. Thanks for posting all the great vids
i believe the difference is that 7018 mr is plain mild steel. 7018-1 mr complies with AWS AWS A5.1/A5.1M: 2004 and has a slightly higher nickel addition... 7018-a1 mr has additions of molybdenum for welding higher alloys bottom line is that unless you are welding a higher alloy, the plain 7018 mr is fine.
Genius! Propping the yourself in place using the fingers. I just finished welding school, nobody ever mentioned this! I have a test this week and I'm gonna give it a try
Thankyou for the pipe welding videos Jody, it's a really big help when you're young and still learning. can't wait to see some of the cup walking videos on the pipe :D
we couldnt see the penetration, just by looking at the keyhole i would say you had full penetration on that root bead, im taking SMAW on Pipe class and this video will definetly help down the road thanks for uploading
I haven't welded in over 3 years, I took a supervisor job. I used to weld x-ray pipe all metals (stainless, inconel, NICU, CUNI, ect). I like the money as a supervisor BUT I REALLY MISS WELDING!
Really love your tips. I have 3 6g tests coming up after only a year at college here in the UK. 2 of them are with 2" sched 80 316 stainless one with a closed V butt backing paste and the other 3.2 gap purged. The Other is 6" 12 mm Chromoly tig root and stick pass, filler and caps. My only real struggle is keeping my capping runs straight. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Holly McAnally I know it's too late for your test but I think Jody did a video on exactly that issue by preserving the top edges of the bevel till the last pass and using the edges as a guide. "Meaningless" electrode manipulation (very brief long arcing) will help the shadows it throws keep that edge better defined.. That's all i got lol. I really want to try a purged root opening like you are doing. Sounds very challenging. I don't even know how I'd approach controlling that puddle transitioning into the vertical portions. Wait, yes I do. I'd dip my tungsten lol
I use to love the Lincoln rods til I tried the Esab Atom Arc. I personally hate ALL ESAB products but God does the Atom Arc 7018 run and look sweet. Its what we use for all our X-ray certifications at the UA. The Lincoln rods love leaving microscopic porosity.
working on my last semester of welding school and im kinda stuck so if you have any videos on 2" sch 80-160 2G 6010 root and hot, and 7018 the rest of the way. if you have a video or could put one up that would be very helpful
hey jody, thanks for the video. I am currently in college taking welding classes... loving it man, I was thinking on buying a welder for myself at home to practice with/fix things/small jobs etc. would you recommend me getting this welding machine you are using here? really appreciate the hard work. cheers.
hey Jody i was wondering your opinion on root methods.. laying the wire, keyholeing, or feeding the wire thur the pipe... im a young welder (19) i was taught to feed it thur the pipe 5/32 gap at about 110 i personally dont like the laying the wire method.or keyhoeing buti never really was taught that.. anyway once the root is in.. the welders turn up the heat too 170 all the way up and past 200 this is for the hot pass and fill but i have never seen any welding videos about
When I run 7018 and say I am doing something small and only burn half a rod. I normally pause for a second at the end of the bead and flick the rod out of the puddle fast to get rid of the hard brown flux at the end of the rod so it restarts a whole lot easier. I learned that from a boilermaker with 20+ years in the field. I know it's not acceptable for testing purposes. I am curious to hear any opinions
powerstroke0459 that's what I do!. I flick the rod towards myself though to keep the whining to a minimum. Break the bottom of that little "cup" of flux on the tip with my index finger after snapping out with a flick and it restarts like magic!
damn...wish i could weld half as good as you! i'm only a hobbiest so no hopes on that but very impressive and thanks for the info! I'm trying to learn how to use my home made stick welder.
Is the oven necessary to try and reduce absorption of atmospheric water into the rods? Kinda like leaving a bag of chips open, they go soft and 'stale'?
Khemar Reid Yeah. So much is said about comfort being the king of quality welds, but almost NOTHING is taught about actually achieving it. Jody's a talented teacher
Hi Jody, I just discovered your videos on TH-cam and I really like them. I've already learned more than I did in welding school in the NAVY... :) You keep mentioning the WPS book? I assume. Where can I get one? Harbor Freight? And what does WPS stand for? Thank you, John D. Wisconsin
I do have a question that is getting me in trouble on cover passes. When you light up on the bottom, first strike of the pass, are you watching the front or the back of the puddle? Most overhead welds I handle with watching the front of the puddle but that just doesn't seem to work for me on the 6g. Heck it even works on the 5g, just not my 6. I'm trying to see the back of the puddle till I get past 3 o'clock/9 o'clock now. My bottom section now is very consistent but when I swap to watching the front of the puddle on the "shoulders" of the pipe, I'm getting terrible undercut. I've tried longer dwell times and different manipulation, but that is screwing my bead profile and looks like hammered hog crap.
Hey! thanks for the help. I did eventually find a work around for those trouble spots by doing pretty much what you just suggested. I didn't turn the amps down but I give the rod a little more "wiggle" and I think that gives my arms and body a little more time to adjust. It's pretty interesting just how much more heat it can soak up just by adding some motion
Since 7018 and 7014 are similar, according to Jody (I believe) and others, why not use the 7014 and forget about the problems with exposing the 7018s to moisture?
Jody.... I have to take this test on 2 inch XX on a 6 G Tuesday and can you tell me for your last stringer pass do you go with a straight in angle or do you aim the tip of your rod so it is slightly aiming upward as you go around?? I ask because i have had some issue with undercut. I am also going to try out today your hand technique as you go around the pipe. I do find myself getting in a bind sometimes and it's not as fluid.
when i would weld 80t ac plus welding rods by messer, when i would weave when i weld i find that somtimes it makes slag inclusions like holes in the weld bead, i only have a little 115v stick welder it only welds at 90-60-30 amps and it will make holes in every setting? am i moving to fast?
As water / moisture EXPANDS 1810 times ANY moisture in the rod picked up by the 7018 rods storage will cause trouble. I have two rod ovens as the difference between a damp 7018 and dry is night and day. No, an old refrigerator with a hundred watt lightbulb cannot maintain a high enough heat to keep the rod dry ( 225 F ). The 6010 and cellulose covered rods do Not go into the oven and the old fridge trick would be acceptable storage....stay safe all
Thanks for another great video. I need help with overhead 7018 2 plate. I would be thankful if u can make a video to help me .. Thanks for all the great videos
running hot.. all i ever see on youtube is walking the cup.. some freehand.. but yeah i was wondering if u cld post something about running real hot and freehanding.. i can freehand.and walk the cup. but at work im told to freehand because its faster..
You mean fill passes or the cover? Maybe your rods are bad or your arc isn't tight. If it's bad technique and you still can't fix it, use a auto dark hood. A lot of guys with not much experience seem to have difficulty using 7018 for the pipe cover passes while wearing fixed shade lens.
I'm welding 2.3mm tubing joints, 45 degree mitre joints.....it sucks coz it's rigt on the ends and they melt really easily and I'm a crap welder LOL......any one got any tips for me? So far I haven't done anything too stupid, but I'd really like to now how to weld these suckers without having to go over them three times and themn grind them down to make them look good....help!!!!!!!!

so far, I love the excalibur rods. very impressed
Been using them for a long time. Some have the “Easy-Start” black patch on the tip. Great rods!
Will be going back to school in January and I will definitely be getting the tig finger for it. Will be refering to these videos ALOT for sure. Thanks for posting all the great vids
i have 2 and a half years of welding in general(im 17) and i already learned alot i keep learning from you jody keep up the good work !!
@ECSBsleeper It's a common test used to certify welders. One test joint certifies both processes.
i believe the difference is that 7018 mr is plain mild steel.

Just took my 21 last week. These videos helped me alot
that thumb to pinky method has kept me from burning myself up every day at work
I haven't welded in over 3 years, I took a supervisor job. I used to weld x-ray pipe all metals (stainless, inconel, NICU, CUNI, ect). I like the money as a supervisor BUT I REALLY MISS WELDING!
love the videos even after 30 years welding. here in Ireland you don't use laywire on a root only dip.
Really love your tips. "got to be tough if you're gonna be dumb".
Love it, wish I had used that quote with some of my students when I was still a weld instructor !!!
Always enjoy watching your videos...keep em' coming.
really a good tool to ease the nerves before a test.
I always like the stick welding videos.
You are killing me welding both sides with your right hand
Lol That's looks my arm. That's no BS. these are the best videos and explanation.
For the cap, did he use a circular motion, side to side or drag? Can't really tell
Great video as always. Thank you so much for sharing your hard earned knowledge.

As you weld your breaking down the rod. We try not to use any more then 1/2 to 3/4 the rod to keep nice clean welds. -Union pipe fitter

I like the Lincoln Excaliburs too. My 160sth seems to like burning them better than the Hobarts. YMMV.
Great stuff Joddy,as always.Tell me do u dry your rods when u doing a welding test
hello, I am Brazilian and would like to see more classes in welding 6g position for 7018, I thank you!

Jody anyway you could do a ua-21 test? 2 inch, all stick. 6010 root, 7018 out and stringer cap
i like the tips on how to position your arms and body it's really helpful an your have good quality.. appreciate it
Khemar Reid Yeah. So much is said about comfort being the king of quality welds, but almost NOTHING is taught about actually achieving it.

@spelunkerd correct

you may need a smaller diameter rod.
Impressive little unit

Since 7018 and 7014 are similar, according to Jody (I believe) and others, why not use the 7014 and forget about the problems with exposing the 7018s to moisture?
i would like to start making some welding videos also and was wondering what kind of camera are you using for the arc shots?
great video. always interesting to watch you

When useing 6010 and your doing a 6g what is the best way to get your end tied in?
what's the difference between the 3 different excalibur 7018 rods ? there's a 7018 MR , 7018-1 MR , and a 7018-A1 MR
Thanks for another great video. I need help with overhead 7018 2 plate. I would be thankful if u can make a video to help me .. Thanks for all the great videos
Is the 3/32 a standard rod size? Or can a 1/8 be used for a single pass cap?
can you do a video for practicing stringer beads on 1/4" steel plate, and which rod is best for it? 6013?7018?
How do you keep your beads from sagging? The puddle likes to fall instead of going with me in the direction I'm traveling, if that makes any sense
SRT92 tighten your arc length and move a little faster
BTW I'm using 3.2 gage rods at about 85 amps......is this setting okay?
Why aren't you walking the cup? cheers Tyt
Good video
Do you have a video where you are doing this cap to a UA21 Standard?
is there a stainless 2 inch test video?
Going. Try. That
running hot.. all i ever see on youtube is walking the cup.. some freehand.. but yeah i was wondering if u cld post something about running real hot and freehanding.. i can freehand.and walk the cup. but at work im told to freehand because its faster..
got a question? when root pass is complete do I remove the argon hose and tape or do I keep them on and how much psi is feesom%⁴‰
how much pressure or psi is feeding in the pipe? stainless pipe will be same everything.
Well sir, Grinders are hired for that very reason.
How old is that machine? I looked at the 160sth online and it looks like a different machine??
Keep posting ur videos :)
I used to do this kind of welding and every time we stopped we had to grind the place you stopped to restart...We built Gas lances..
thank u soo much great video
Thanks
Great, thanks
Is there a part one to this ?
will this same technique work for 6G testing on 6" dia. pipe?
saludos...desde mexico he aprendido mucho....lastima que no le entienda.....o estubiera subtitulado.....pero gracias
where can I get a tig finger, how much are they?
Good welder 👏👏
just simpler to stick weld out in the field compared to tigging with the gas tank.
how many current did you used?
Thanks! Great vid and superb welding! Quote: "You gotta be tough if you're going to be dumb!" LOL!
I'm getting porosity at 6 o clock. when I'm filling. Any advise.
***** Not tight enough?
You mean fill passes or the cover? Maybe your rods are bad or your arc isn't tight. If it's bad technique and you still can't fix it, use a auto dark hood. A lot of guys with not much experience seem to have difficulty using 7018 for the pipe cover passes while wearing fixed shade lens.
FatPot G Thanks, I'll give a shot. Would I strike up at about 5 oclock, and move back into 6 oclock?
ya you strike about a half inch ahead of where you will tie in your weld with the 7018
be quick with the rod angle so it don't lump up
Jody... what size filler wire were your using?
Show me how you stick weld 2 millimeter stainless steel pipe!6g position of course
I'm welding 2.3mm tubing joints, 45 degree mitre joints.....it sucks coz it's rigt on the ends and they melt really easily and I'm a crap welder LOL......any one got any tips for me? So far I haven't done anything too stupid, but I'd really like to now how to weld these suckers without having to go over them three times and themn grind them down to make them look good....help!!!!!!!!
thanks jody i see my tig fingers and shirt ship today
What number rod were you useing
no shame in grinding.
Grind your starts
lmfao!
try this with a basic electrode not a rutile
i waiting the cup walking technique : )
Forever alone sticker haha
Lol pinky Guys that tig finger is something els
