I remember the old episode of Proud Family where Penny befriends an immigrant family, near the end of the episode: a person graffitied the family's house telling them to go back to their country. It stuck with me after watching it again a few years ago.
I guess the people at Fox News never saw that episode of X-Men the animated series episode where some of the X-Men time travel to the 1950s and a coffee shop owner is being racist towards Storm and Wolverine almost kills the coffee shop owner. That show was woke for the 1990a, with villains who are active bigots, with some villains like Grandon Creed being based on Neo-Nazis.
I started watching the 90’s X-men for the first time. And I don’t want to hear people complain that the MCU is going to turn the X-men woke. This show is so woke, that I was just waiting for one of the characters to say “Mutants lives matter”.
I remember seeing an episode of 90210 where they were talking about racism.. And how one of the white characters didn't like how a Neo Nazi was treating his black friend.. People just wanna be mad at something that's always been talked about..
My favorite episode in the Proud Family was Black history month episode when Penny went back in time when Black and white people are viewed different and in school she made a great speech of equal rights and brother & sisters in arms and a bigger and better dream❤...Cartoons have always been based and political people are just mentally weak nowadays🤦♂️
Fuck it I'll say this. A better dream oh God. We all have that fight for equality like Malcolm X once said and to go back like it was nothing and leapfrog the steps it takes to get everyone there... STFU
A good majority of cartoons from the 90's and early 2000s ALWAYS made thought provoking episodes addressing various issues. Seems like anytime quality writers throw a bone to more than one demographic, these backwards, paranoid SOBs assume there's some insidious agenda against them. Reality is, they need to realize the world doesn't revolve around them and only them/they're not the main character. Hell, The New Adventures of Batman covered body dysmorphia and how royally fucked up the entertainment industry [especially modeling] can be. The episode was "Mean Seasons."
All the DCAU/Timmverse shows talked about stuff like this. There was an episode of Superman The Animated Series where Clark was trying to take down a racist cop who framed a black man for murder.
It is one thing to criticize how the politiccal message was done and written. Another thing is to pretend that kids and family cartoons never had any politics and that it is bad to sometimes educate and it's bad to treat children like they are conscious and curious beings.
I know right. And they want to act like the original run was subtle, even though it wasn't. It never was. I would hate for them to see the Recess capitalism episode or the episode of Sesame Street episode that tackled racism.
Fun fact: "Woke" was once a black thing. A good thing. And like most good things that come from black culture it was co-opted by the cultural ether and has mostly lost its initial roots
The Proud Family always focused on real world issues such as racism, sexism, and discrimination since the original series premiered back in 2001. The Louder and Prouder series still focuses on issues that are relevant today and I think the filmmakers and animators who are working on the show are doing a great job on Louder and Prouder. Some jerks on social media and TH-cam are going to attack this show for being “woke” which is really annoying but if Penny Proud and her family and friends were real, what would they do in the current situations that are going on in the world today like homophobia and police brutality? Whatever happens in the real world is going to affect cartoons, comic books and movies whether you like it or not. Also animation needs to be treated with respect as a medium and not a genre. I love shows like The Owl House and The Proud Family Louder and Prouder because both shows have themes of friendship, acceptance and neurodivergence. They also have dark themes like discrimination and grief. That’s important for storytelling and character development. I also love the episode revealed that Penny’s baby brother BeBe is revealed to have autism. I’m autistic and cartoons are my special interest. Even cartoons like Avatar The Last Airbender has dark themes like imperialism and genocide.
The reason people are "mad at a children's cartoon for teaching about slavery and racism" is that it isn't teaching about those things-it's teaching blatant lies. Slaves didn't build the country in terms of their contribution to GDP nor literally in terms of actually making anything, yet the rap in the show says that, explicitly, over and over again. It also conflates a lot of historical settings together and doesn't explain their actual contexts. It also makes no mention of black slave owners or how black slaves were originally captured in Africa... etc., etc.
I remember episodes of Family Matters and That So Raven that tackle the issues of racism as well and those came out in the 90's and early 2000's. The reality is cartoons are not getting more political with their messages, rather we just got older to have a more stronger understanding of these messages.
They also tackled episode with drugs on the Wayan's Brothers, bullying with the Jamie Foxx show and gun violence, with Family Matters too. I was a kid at the time and those episode before the show started would leave a warning before staring the show the show was balance with comedy and seriousness and you left with a good moral and seeing the bad people get fired.
This is a re-write of history. It's social programming on kids to satisfy the woke mob. Yeah, they're a LOT more political, and not in a good way either.
I remember those shows. That's so raven had the rac1st store employee and family matters had the grandma telling a story about how she went to the library everyday until she was let in. They were great episodes that I'll never forget but acting like they were saying the same things is crazy. It's not about the issue, it's about being told that's there's only 1 solution and pressuring people to agree with it. I didn't see the proud family episode, idk why there's a new episode to a show that ended 15 years ago, so I'm talking about other shows. There are good and bay ways to bring up issues. Velma is a bad example but they didn't have a problem with it. The guy in the hat loved it.
Just like Horror movies, Cartoons (especially the good ones) have ALWAYS have messages in their cartoons no matter what period. The people who were kids and are now complaining about current shows being "Woke" were just the stupid dumbass kids who were watching the shows for the action but never paid attention to the plot. Just to mind blow people's memories or anyone reading this, the BTAS episode "Lock-Up" features a abusive Arkham security guard who blames Gotham's crime on "Liberal media" and decides to pretty much become a Punisher type anti hero and targets members of the law and even the police for being "soft on crime"... now what does that remind you off? If that episode came out now the right would be calling BTAS a woke Batman show.
Batman The Animated Series. I remember the episode Lock Up too. I also remember the episode Appointment in Crime Alley where Batman had to stop this villain named Roland Daggett who is trying to destroy this old rundown neighborhood where people are still living. This is also the same episode where it revealed where Batman’s parents were murdered. I think that episode had the theme of gentrification.
And that's your problem. You think the issue is that it deals with racism. The question is and how it deals with it. Statement one: racism exists Statement two: racism exists and is perpetrated by only one race who must be made to collectively pay for it! Both statements deal with racism. But the tone is rather different wouldn't you say?
Snowflake Fox continuing to hyperfocus on social issues because their side has next to nothing else by way of policy to actually better people's lives.
In a episode that's about Penny being jealous of Dejonay hanging out with her new boyfriend more than her, it really went hard on a topic that should have been in an episode on it's own. Like if Penny learned that there are people that are against teaching the history of slavery in schools and so she and her friends put on that display that shows that slavery happened and America needs to accept it.
Indeed. But what we're concerned about is the other half. The parts where Slavery was fought too. The underground railroad. the Civil rights acts. And an entire 100+ years of what was done to help. People don't even know there were already multiple Reparations bills already passed in prior generations too, or That black communities used to be stronger 30-40 years ago, compared to today.....
@@CLDJ227 Before, they had a lot more they were reaching out to do and overcome the difficulties. They had their families to support their ambitions, even to reach into Medical schools, with the strictest of standards and the highest bar. The medical field is such a strict one, that mistakes can cost a lot. I'd say it's a field even more fierce than Law school. And yet they had the push and strength to get into those fields gradually and succeed, even when there was more barriers. But now, That foundation support that used to be their biggest source of strength was slowly torn apart, under what seemed like a promise for support. You might know of those programs that offer support for single parents? How many mothers accepted that in place of the support of the men in their lives? And often targeted towards certain communities as well. The stories of those who found out their fathers didn't abandon them are still coming out from time to time. And how often it's a story of a certain kind of people too... And add onto that, Red line policies in certain states, that lowers the Education standards, so that when they do manage to get past highschool, they can't hope to reach to many of the more difficult paths anymore. So even if they apply Diversity policies. it's harder for them to succeed.
Every time my mom and I sat down to watch Disney's Pocahontas my mom would tell me what really happened with the Native Americans and how things weren't quite as tame as they happened in the movie. I also grew up watching movies like A Time to Kill, The Color Purple, and and The Green Mile. Definitely not movies for a kid, and definitely not the best movies (since some can be seen as the usual Oscar Bait kind of movie) but despite that, my parents still raised me to be knowledgeable and aware of certain issues. They didn't raise me to be ignorant or to keep my head in the sand. The way people nowadays are so scared to teach factual history is crazy. Where do we draw the line? Are we going to whitewash talk of WW2 because the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki might make American kids feel guilty? What about the blood shed during the Revolutionary and Civil war? History isn't always going to be pleasant, but it needs to be taught. It's okay for kids to feel a little guilty or unsure about these things in history, it's how they learn. I think people get so terrified and upset about not always being happy/comfortable, they forget that sometimes shit is gonna happen. It's natural. What matters is how you work through these situations where you are uncomfortable, guilty, or ashamed.
Loved this discussion from last night's stream. Another old TV show I loved that had another segment about racism & discrimination, was in the 2003 Teen Titans, Starfire talked with Cyborg about being judged for being tamaranean, and how a word, "troq," was a term used to call Star's people worthless. Star later asked if Cyborg ever felt judged or discriminated for his look, and he said "Of course
@@alvinjohnson5037 I think he would have, but he knew that with Humans all being.. humans. It wouldn't make sense to her if it's based on color, it shouldn't make sense to us either
The Proud Family was always a show that people would consider "woke". I remember they had a women empowerment episode where Penny was the best player on the boys football team, and a black history month episode.
Wait till the X-Men return in the MCU where in the movies they're hunted down because of them being mutants. Fox News gonna lose their shit crying Woke, when that's been the story for the X-Men since their existence
Penny Proud: + Played football with boys. + Went back in time during the segregation and quoted Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech. + Outright telling people that saying "go back to your country" and "America is for Americans" is wrong. How's that 🍵tasting?
Nah, I think I must disagree. I don’t remember being able to see my hand at all angles. I have had to turn it around a good amount just to see it, good sir.
@@zoeh.mitchell1930 I was trying to tell my biracial daughter that white people are evil and they don’t deserve reputation and money from white people so you’re talking about that episode, right
Proud Family has always tackled political stuff, even from the beginning. With that being said, Louder and Prouder can be hit or miss with these morals. Some they portray well, others, not so well.
I was actually anticipating an episode like this from the Proud Family given their past episodes on similar matters. Even when The Proud Family got announced for getting a relaunch I knew they would eventually tackle it. Just not surprised people got up in arms, I am more surprised people thought they wouldn’t bring it up. You ain’t gonna silence the Proud Family Lol.
@@SymbiSpidey playing a Harry Potter video game, voting anything but straight left, women not wanting to share public showers, liking America, liking capitalism, then you have your extra dumb dumbs (yes the rare ones) who think any white man who isn’t an activist is by default fascist. Could honestly go on. And yes there are also times where people use woke to define anything they don’t like such as title 9 and affirmative action then there’s Velma, your people making vids saying whites shouldn’t breed, people who burn court houses, and people who think “you didn’t do what I want so I can beat you”. Anyone who commonly describes things as woke or fascist is a hypocrite who lives in a world of hyperbole
the term "fascist" or "far right" coming from the far left has always been a buzzword for "anything we disagree with." You can't be simple enough to see how easy and obvious that line always is. Think of something else to say at least.
No. A slow can highlight something and not be that thing. Shows aren't always political until the core content becomes about politics, in this instance lies based upon the twisting of history.
Some are just realizing cartoons address real world parallels such as segregation and race politics and are upset about it? Damn they're in for a rude awakening when the X-Men revival comes out this year lol
This is false and you know if there was a white power episode from a white show it will be cancelled and called racist. Lets not forget these are kids show so why the hell are they talking about white supremacy, slaves, reparations, colorism and lgbt on a "children's" show. I would understand if this was the boondocks but this is supposed to be a kids show on disney.
Proud family had Penny going back into segregation era America, a homophobia episode, and and Islamophobia episode in the original show. This isn't anything new but people just wanna cry about it
@@coreywallace2052 really? cause I recently watch the original cartoon, and it handled this type of subject matters in a much better way than this show is.
@@jordanwilliams1546 So all white people are responsible for what happened in the US? Especially those who immigrated to the US long after slavery was abolished?
People once again thinking that Martin Luther King was just some cosmic anomaly that materialized on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, spoke into a microphone for five minutes, and disappeared back into the celestial plane. Dude had quite a lot to say, and all the people who hinge on his "I Have a Dream" speech to flippantly dismiss real racial issues would be taken aback at the 99% of everything else he ever wrote.
The only thing personally I'd criticize is to me it's a little heavy handed like hit you over the head with the message. Like when they go 'do something use your white privilege" and it's not a joke. To me you can animation with a message with a point of real world criticism while being subtle about it. I feel they could've done the same message a bit more subtle in execution. But I also understand Proud family has always been a show that touched upon various topics.
There's an old episode of Mister Roger's Neighborhood where he and a black man both had their feet in a kiddie pool, and Fred was just chatting about how it was nice. I'm sure plenty of white parents had a stroke when their kids saw that.
The proud family was so woke, and I loved it still to this day. There is a reason it was on for a long time back in the day. Never have I watched the show and thought I should hate myself wtf🤣🤣.
I like yall but this is a bad take. Progressives do this all the time. “All the shows in past were political” Maybe but the message was often way more subtle and most importantly the quality was just better. The main issue with this new version is that is sucks.
Can't be subtle when the heads of the US education system is cannibalizing their own to shovel funds to shady private religious schools. So now it has to be said from a bullhorn.
I can understand that taking about racism might be a bit too much for kids. But ignoring, censoring, or even pretending that it doesn’t exist is probably more damaging to kids.
It's a sad discussion to have with your children. No one wants their babies to experience racism. But truthfully I think talking about it is better than the shock of someone treating them less than. I would love to shield them, but that's dangerous like you guys said.
Unfortunately some people raise their kids to be racist so other kids are forced to experience that racism directed at them from their peers. I don’t think there’s a “too young” argument to be made if weee talking about what racism is and what it can look like in your classroom, your neighborhood, your house etc
I'm surprised that he did not mention the X-men, as the mutants represented blacks/minorities being discriminated against just because they had special abilities or looked different.
The real problem is the writing in this show. The original problem family had nuance; which is why episodes like the segregation episode were able to tackle a dark issue , but still didn't come out as preachy. In my opinion this seems like something that trying to go viral on the internet. The proud family was one of my favorite cartoons as kid, and i feel like we should expect more from writing even if it is only a animated show. The way i see when you present a issue with ought providing a viable solution is only going to lead hatred.
Vividly remember an episode of "That's So Raven" in the 2000's where a manager character didn't hire Raven because she's black. They set up a secret camera trap and the manager literally says to the camera 'I don't like Black people.' then the canned audience boos and gives shocked reactions. The goofy show about a psychic girl and her daily life dealing with her powers dealt with race-based discrimination and no one at the time said, "Too much!"
I think we need a new rule. Anyone who brings up the I have A Dream Speech need to quote more than that one part of it and/or any other speech MLK made. I find it funny that somehow bringing up any bad part about our history makes them think it is anti-white. Guilt is when you know you did something wrong. Shame is when others know you did something wrong. Cartoons, comics, children's books handling these topics are a way for kids to learn and be able to ask questions about it.
Penny & her friends demand 40 acres of land. Well, that's problematic because the land actually belongs to the Native Americans. They have no claim to it. Monkey's Paw: Penny & her friends get 40 acres of land in Africa.
I always liked when the old Proud Family series would bring up these discussions, but something about how the new series discusses racism seems, I dunno, kinda cringe. Maybe it’s the implications that people need to pay for something they personally had no involvement in from centuries again.
If they ever do a list of cartoons and kid shows with serious topics that would be great! They were alot of them in the 90's from my memory and they never talked down to children from bullying, drugs and guns. My favorite episode and it was most controversial, though I never knew it at the time, was Gargoyles when Bronx accidentally shot Eliza.
@92JazzQueen What are you talking about? Have you watched the news lately, black history is proposed to being banned taught in schools. What planet you on?
I've watched cartoons all my life and I have never seen any so politically controversial as this. Slaves didn't solely build this country which is the attitude I get from this episode and the idea I feel is being pushed. Slaves did unwillingly contribute greatly to "help" build this country into what it is today and yes, we should acknowledge that but to say white people had little to no role or impact on the abolition of slavery and civil rights of black people isn't right either. Yes, there's a lot in black history that black people can say they owe to their own what with Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad, Frederick Douglass and the abolitionist movement during the 1800's up to Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil rights movements of the 60's but there were always white people who supported their ideas and causes who helped them along the way. We can't continue to view this with a "the blacks owe us whites this" or "the whites owe the blacks this" kind of perspective less we want to continue spreading divisiveness and discord between races but rather we should see this as a combined effort from all races to not see a person's skin color as an disadvantage or an advantage but that we are all human the same.
Idk I will still attest that cartoons were different when I was a kid. Static shock was a good example of a "woke" cartoon back in the day. It delt with issues of racism, homelessness, school shootings, ect. But it was interwoven into a story in a way that was more digestible and entertaining for a kid. This Proud family scene feels kinda forced and pushy, almost like one of those cringy school assemblies you had to sit through in middle school. I think a lot of people are fed up with the fact that most media these days prioritize their message over a good narrative.
I'm sorry but no, there's a difference between teaching good morals and putting political propaganda. It's not the same to say: "You should not judge someone by their skin color" than to say "USA is a land of white supremacy where minorities are always oppressed". Whether you agree or disagree with the latter, that's too much for kids. But today nobody knows how to differentiate between good morals and political views, and this drama is proof of that. That episode doesn't teach good morals, it's a mean preaching about political drama.
What good morals aren't they teaching? Y'all quick to hide behind some vague buzzwords and don't have the gall nor the legitimate reasoning as to why things like this shouldn't be brought up on a regular basis. Because as long as there is injustice and exploitation of working black/brown people you're never going to stop hearing nor seeing it.
@@ASSARAPTUS First of all, I never said that these topics should not be brought up ever, but that they should not be taught to children at such an early age. Second, even that nonsensical chatter isn't factual, it fails to acknowledge various historical aspects, but to be fair that's what happens when you boil down US history to just "slaves" and nothing else. And finally, if you want to cover political issues in your series you must at least follow two important rules: 1. You must be impartial (which that sermon was not) 2. You must be subtle (and that scene was as subtle as an elephant in middle of a library).
@@TheXdante23 Listen to yourself. Impartial? To chattel slavery? Good morals there. The reason why the message isn't subtle is because whenever the overall argument is often brought up. PPL either willfully ignore it and maintain the same shitty status quo, or try to prevent others from being made aware of it (📚 banning, demonization of subjects). Secondly, minority groups should never fall into the trap of coddling the oppressor. Bigotry is a learned behavior and must be called out at all times to push for a more egalitarian society.
@@ASSARAPTUS Of course, slavery is morally wrong, but how we handle the subject, especially after hundreds of years of its occurrence, is what can be handled impartially. And demanding reparations and stating that we still live in an oppressive society is not a moral, is a political position (which again you can agree or disagre). And by the way, the show is for kids not racists, if you want kids to grow up not being bigots then don't treat them like they're already ones.
@@TheXdante23 Only an Dummy would look at a show of Black, Latin, AND White characters standing in solidarity to acknowledge and condemn the remnants of racism, and come out of it thinking they're attacking the kids watching it. But here you are.
The problem seems to be the way in which the shows present problems, and the way that they talk about them. Not to mention, the vernacular used in relaying a socio political message. Yes, Fresh Prince, Family Matters, the Proud family, etc. presented racism problems in their content. The key difference here is, and someone mentioned it below, is there's an episode about black history month and it's focus is equality; there is clearly a key difference between what we think of equality in 2003 and what certain sectors on the left now call "equity." The former is mainly aligned with MLK's mantra and mission, and the latter with the current particular lefts socio zeitgeist. It was political back then, but they are also advocating for completely different things. There weren't as many people back then saying things like "black people can't be racist." The idea was "treat people the same regardless of what they look like." That idea has been turned on it's head to "treat people differently because of their race." Conservatives seem to largely, almost entirely if not for some of the fringe Zinc, Arkansas racists, agree with the former sentiment and not so much the latter, and I tend to agree with them there. People do this weird about face as if they don't know what it is that people are talking about. You know that the social messages are often different, you're not that dumb to not realize the message is sometimes different depending on the time period. You ain't stupid.
@RegularLegsC137 I mean, they're doing the usual dog and Pony show, and in some ways I get it. We all have our sense of reality and it's hard to untether ourselves from it. But goodness, the messages are just clearly different. The left of 2003 is simply different from the left of 2022. Or, the ones from 2003 are older and quieter, where as the ones who are the loudest are of a certain kind of leftist.
Cant wait for a Static Shock reboot where they'll cover race issues, only for people who dont know the medium to bitch and moan and say its gone woke. Even though the character was "Woke" since his inception.

Racism is always going to be an uncomfortable subject, irregardless if what side one is on. Better a small discomfort that brings knowledge than allowing an even greater discomfort for all by allowing history to repeat itself out of ignorance. Some people just want to remain ignorant because they can't abide a small discomfort.
Why do people always bring up Martin Luther King whenever there's a concern regarding black people and race relations. Its like they dont know of any other civil rights leaders or black activists. Not everyone goes by Martin Luther King's philosophy, some people lean more so towards Malcom X. Have they ever considered that? My goodness. Half these people bringing up Martin L King dont know shit about him or what he stood for besides his I Had A Dream speech
I see this as ageism and race. Many black cartoons deal with serious topics. Their white counterparts are about fantasy and fun. In the 70s, Fat Albert dealt with mental illness, pornography, child abuse, and racism. While Scooby-Doo and its many clones showed real estate fraud using scare tactics. When The Proud Family debuted, it was covering issues like racism, sexuality, music ripping, and religion. While Kim Possible fought fantasy crimes of world domination using mind control, robots, and intimidation. Today, we have The Ghost and Molly Mcgee and Hamster and Gretel on Disney+ featuring mild children's entertainment. Then we get The Proud Family reboot complete with topics like gay marriage, slavery, and autism. The problem has always been that the entertainment industry has always seen Black children as mini-adults. They are above fantasy and adventure and require real-world issues. They aren't allowed to have magical things happen because they reside in the real world. Penny can't go back in time to stop a mad scientist from taking over the world like Kim Possible. She goes back to see racial injustice. While it's important to address these topics. Why must all Black cast cartoons be forced to be the history lesson? This is why you don't see Penny Proud Halloween costumes and so few toys. But Kim Possible a cartoon at last aired new episodes 15 years ago has more. Penny may be politically correct but she is boring. So much so that no one wants to collect her, play with her, or wear a costume of her. This is why Black Panther was such a roaring success. It was about fantasy and adventure. Disney needs to create Black characters that are exciting and fun. Flying in spaceships or using magic. Trust me it will draw a Black audience to get something it's been denied for years.
There was one episode of Kim Possible where it talked about people with disabilities-one of the characters was in a wheelchair-and Kim leanred that while he had a wheelchair, he could still function as a normal person. I think even one episode, I think it was either Drakken or Kim, but Shego stole the guy's wheelchair because it had gadgets and it was pointed out how low that was to steal that kid's wheelchair. Not that I'm saying what you're saying is wrong, just wanted to point that out. Static Shock is also a black centered show that had him go on cool adventures as well as tackle huge problems like racism, gun violence, bullying, ect.
This is a little reductive. The proud family usually keep heavy topic episodes separate from episodes with mad scientists and magic Al Roker. TPF always had both, it was never completely a show tackling social issues.
As a black man. I'd like to enjoy black media that don't bring slavery up.... I get it. What you gonna do about it? But it's not a big deal for news coverage.
Proud Family never shied away from these subjects even in the 2000s. I hope this show continues 1) it can spread more knowledge 2) kids (Black kids in particular) can feel represented. Only this, Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, and Craig of the Creek are the only cartoons w/Black leads. Let’s hope it continues.
I really don't mind it when a show tries to be political, especially with something like Proud Family. But this time around I just find it to be more obnoxious than anything when it comes to trying to make a social statement towards black people, at least in the second season. And that's coming FROM a black person as well. In fact, it nearly put me off of the show altogether with the episode where it tried to tackle the subject of people liking someone that's not of the same race as them. Between them making most of the black characters so dang despicable and them treating such a preference like it's THAT dang offensive, it ended up being personal to the point where the episode left me in a bad mood. All things considering, the season is more at its best when it focused on the family itself and their own issues instead of being political. That's something the original did best. At least it didn't have Penny blurt out that BS about Black people can't be racist...
100%, God i hated that episode. Not just because of how they portrayed the moral, but the reason the group Dogpiled Zoey based on something that (In context of the episodes) may not have even been true, but they just blindly believed the word of Maya's cousin, who we never see. Someone who could easily have been wrong or lying. Also that last part... yep, they saved that for the annoying POS Maya to say, and the show doesn't even treat that statement as wrong.
You are right and wrong. Has the Proud Family always been socially conscious? Hell yes. Was it to this level of Gods Not Dead preaching cringe?, NOPE. The episode where Penny is transported back to the past and Zoe (YT) is not allowed to play with her and even has to sneak taking her pet bird to Trudy and says insensitivity that she's amazing for a colored doctor. Its beyond rediculous acting as though this is on the same level as that. Also I am for teaching how ALL human history is filled with blood and teeachery. After learning about Native American tribes that would -ape and enslave people from other tribes really opened my eyes to how evil ANY human could be. Vikings imrprisoned other vikings, English enslaved the Irish and so on. The fact that we act rediculous about this is silly too. Also reparations I'd say is the most rediculous part of this spoken word poetry. That and the episode where Laciengia, Dejonay, Maya, and Penny honestly get so bent out of shape by a guys dating preferences mainly lean one direction. That needs to be dismissed and shoulda had Sugar Mama saying "hey, you aren't for everybody but that doesn't mean you aren't amazing." This whole *examining* dating preferences wether it be race or gender is absolutely imsane. Learn to take rejection and also unless someone mentions why don't immediately jump to its because I'm this or that. Maybe its your musical taste, maybe you wear a brand of clothes they don't like. *sigh* My parents cancelled their Disney+ subscription and have decided to boycott everything Disney because of this clip from this show, which I am 99 % certain they only know from watching Fox News. Totally agree and I think you're right I grew up in the 80s and they wanted us meaning all of the kids to be color blind and they really didn't teach much history of any kind at my elementary I ended up having to learn from cartoons and movies and if I remember right I think even Little House on the prairie talked about social issues I know it's not a cartoon but it was a kids and family program yeah you're right this is nothing new thank you for sharing
I'm a 90s kid who immigrated to the US when I was 5. I learned plenty of history growing up in this country. I didn't discover that slavery existed in America when I was in my 20s. I had already learned that when I was a kid in elementary schools. Jim Crow, civil rights, ghettos, the holocaust, Japanese interment camps.... the list goes on I learned it all before I was out of highschool. Sure I learned more in college and later as an adult, but the ugly history wasn't hidden away from us. I grew up on all the 90s cartoons and a lot of the family late night shows, I am well aware that a lot of them had important messages on race and human relations. The difference is they didn't paint the world so black and white. They didn't just say white people bad and that we live in an inherently white supremacist society full of fragile white people who want to beat everyone down with their privilege. I loved the fresh prince, I watch it to this day. I love x-men animated series I watch it with my son. None of those shows beat you over the head with the messaging, or tried to completely rewrite society. They spoke out on what the world was like in a poignant manner. Hell I will do you one better, I used to love watching the proud family as a kid, I still think it's a good cartoon. The messages were better written and executed. This new proud family is just an agenda driven empty shadow. How anyone could believe that in 2023 the United States is an inherently white supremacist society is absolutely out if their mind. Yes the US is not perfect. I have lived here for 26 years now, there is a lot that can and should improve, but this country is a not a racist country with a secret cabal of racist people making racist systems. Yes racism exists, but it's not deep seeded in our systems or even the people here. It's a small thing that no longer plagues us like it did so many years before. Except it's making a grand return now, but in the other direction. Now kids are being taught to hate white people, and treat anyone who isn't black or brown as less than or as the enemy. Men are inherently bad, white men especially. Anyway sorry for the rant.
Yes it is divisive, CRT is inherently racket politics (e.g. reparations) for the original sin of slavery and racism, which can never go away and only create more need for reparations and federal assistance and special treatment, and prioritizing (equity). You support it solely because it benefits you, you're selfish, that's fine, but don't dress this up as some righteous thing, just be honest and say you deserve more than Paul.
Why the hell did you guys censor "sissy"?! I had to look up the original show's episode names to know what was being censored. It's *not* a curse word! Y'all are going too far with the censorship. Is it because of TH-cam? 😆➡️😒
It's youtube. I was watching a live stream and told someone I'm called sissy ( I'm the oldest sister) and said in gacha games I don't summon for girls. Both statements were censored. The streamer laughed at me because I don't curse, but I was censored.
My god I said the same dam thing these people are all selective I saw a black guy tell me the Cosby and old proud family never had stuff like this I asked him was he smoking crack at that time
I don't think you can honestly say that Proud Family is anti-status quo when they're just repeating talking points from the status quo of the Left. And that's the problem that I have with the modern Proud Family, they're just playing lip service to CRT, but not with any nuance of what it actually means. Like if you want to talk about freedom for POC then you need to go all the way with it, what does a culture where POC are truly free look like.
I skimmed news about a Proud Family controversy but didn't want to spoil myself before watching. When I finished all the episodes, I assumed the controversy was the episode about the girls ostracizing Zoey for unknowingly dating a boy with white fever lmao!
The new episodes handled thr issue with no nuances and a lot of misinformation. Seriously, in this day and age how would anyone cover up someone's status as a slaveowner
It's not the fact it was woke that is the problem, it's the fact that the political message in the current show is awful. The old series with the MLK episode was done with nuance and maturity, this series isn't, with the black people can't be racist crap, to having a preference for dating white people is racist.
I think it was 3 years ago Pearl the whitest Gem you knew from Steven universe, did like a PSA when it came to Thomas Edison and a lightbulb... However the commercial continues after the end of the PSA and talks about how it could have been many of the black assistance that helped Edison that could have been the one to discover and then goes on about history erasing those that are not deemed important. And this was a L'Oreal sponsorship lol c;
I spent about 8 years (from age 7 to 15) of my life on meds for ADHD, and even trough the perpetual medication induced stupor I was in I was able to recognize that the og Proud Family was filled to the brim with social commentary.
This is from the reboot show. Proud Family: Louder and Prouder. Though from what I’ve seen, most people don’t like the reboot as much as the original Proud Family.
And yet when Bruce W. Smith did a straight up song about racial injustice sung by little kids in BEBE'S KIDS, which was unseen by a white kid like me in kids entertainment up to that point, none of these hatemongers gave a shit back then. The only thing that changed was social media and meaningless buzzwords.
Black cartoons have been talking about racism and similar subjects since Fat Albert!
I remember the old episode of Proud Family where Penny befriends an immigrant family, near the end of the episode: a person graffitied the family's house telling them to go back to their country. It stuck with me after watching it again a few years ago.
I think that was the family swap episode where Penny had to live with the immigrant family.
I remember that episode too.
Amazing that this episode wasn't on Fox News back then. Bill O'Reilly would've blown a gasket
"Go back to your country" was the censored version! It was originally "Go back home, towelheads!".
more than a migrant family, they were a MUSLIM immigrant family. They decided to talk about muslim racism during the heat of the first bush term

The Proud Family has ALWAYS been woke. Hell, it was woke before woke was a thing.

This is racism and revisionist history.
@Russo Is A Genius, Bro! Boy shut up
@Russo Is A Genius, Bro! Really bro?
Smart Guy too
They also tackled episode with drugs on the Wayan's Brothers, bullying with the Jamie Foxx show and gun violence, with Family Matters too.
I was a kid at the time and those episode before the show started would leave a warning before staring the show the show was balance with comedy and seriousness and you left with a good moral and seeing the bad people get fired.
And I would like to think that that shows humanities getting more mature as a species
"The Proud family has gone WoKe!!!"
Yeah, where have you been for the past 20 years?
Probably they weren’t even born yet or didn’t care about it in the first place
Statement one: racism exists
Statement two: racism exists and is perpetrated by only one race who must be made to collectively pay for it!

They already had an episode about slavery and covering up history written this season. This was a visual piece completely separate from that episode

I experienced racism as a child. Why would talking about my experiences be “too much”?

Yeah that’s completely fair
Thanks for this. The Proud family has always been conscious
The problem here, this had to have been done by focus groups…
Or Disney pandering again
Proud Family, That's So Raven, and Static Shock were all talking bout this stuff back in the early 2000s
I'm just so tired of black people never can talk about or tell our history...but others can.
They think they are being slick trying to speak for us so they can avoid the backlash of their racist ways💯
What planet are you on?
@92JazzQueen What are you talking about? Have you watched the news lately, black history is proposed to being banned taught in schools. What planet you on?
@Tamika Woods that's thr dishonest take on it
The Proud Family is a cartoon that often times tackle issues that in real life, we are afraid to talk about like Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids.
The Proud Family did an episode Islamophobia in 2003 when it was at it's peak
of course Fox News is gonna whine about it
LET ME ENJOY THE PROUD FAMILY, DAMMIT!
Great coverage
People complaining about Proud Family being woke have clearly never watched the Proud Family
Holy crap I had to scroll forever to find one sensible person. Thank you this is exactly the problem, that double toasted likes to overlook.
@shettywap yeah absolutely, it's such a wildly different left.
Cant wait for a Static Shock reboot where they'll cover race issues, only for people who dont know the medium to bitch and moan and say its gone woke. Even though the character was "Woke" since his inception.
how about we make static shock white and see how you like it
@@dangelo4671 Could you please elaborate? Are you getting upset about the little mermaid....?🤭

@@dangelo4671 That's a terrible comparison, a better one would have been the use a black panther.
Because funny enough there was a white black panther and in regard to how people "liked it". Majority of people didn't care one way or the other.
Mostly when it comes obvious the people want a strawman
Why do people always bring up Martin Luther King whenever there's a concern regarding black people and race relations. Its like they dont know of any other civil rights leaders or black activists. Not everyone goes by Martin Luther King's philosophy, some people lean more so towards Malcom X. Have they ever considered that? My goodness. Half these people bringing up Martin L King dont know shit about him or what he stood for besides his I Had A Dream speech
MLK is the safe negro compared to Malcolm X.
Yes. That is what we need for the Black Community. We will get a much bigger audience if that happens.
Dismantle the system and be constant in the pursuit of it
Your jovial tone shows ignorance of the situation.
All cookies have salt in them, but you understand why I wouldn't eat a cookie that's made entirely from salt, right?
I thought it was OK, but people act like this is the Disney version of the Boondocks.
That episode of Mr Rogers always brings a tear to my eye
/asablackman
100%, God i hated that episode. Not just because of how they portrayed the moral, but the reason the group Dogpiled Zoey based on something that (In context of the episodes) may not have even been true, but they just blindly believed the word of Maya's cousin, who we never see. Someone who could easily have been wrong or lying.
Also that last part... yep, they saved that for the annoying POS Maya to say, and the show doesn't even treat that statement as wrong.
But why didn't they mention the Civil War?
Tbh some kid show should teach that, how handle rejection and not hold grudges. Also Maya is a awful character, she's the angry actvist down to a T and no matter what one thing rings true about stories. "No one likes Activists." Its why Bros failed too.
Does anyone remember Bugs Bunny cartoons? They were anything but innocent. Very political and adult.
The new proud family is really awful Jesus christ I turned it off mid season 2
Not only a power dynamic, it's a class dynamic as well.
Huh?
Wow funny you brought up the Static Shock episode 😂 his dad complained about rap too

Yeah that’s fair
