The Best US Banks for Global Citizens

As you already know from our previous videos, the United States has a unique tax policy for its citizens wanting to go offshore and this policy involves both challenges and advantages.
Here at Nomad Capitalist, we advise US citizens to keep their American bank accounts, but you should choose your bank wisely.
On one hand, you may want to avoid the biggest banks, as they don't train their employees well enough and they don't want to bother with specific situations. On the other hand, really small banks are not a good option as well, as they prefer to avoid any potential risks.
The solution: mid-sized banks with international exposure that tend to develop personal relationships with their clients.
    -------

No doubts , A good way of growing and saving your money is through investing . You don't need to have much before you can invest. "That little money you have now can make you millions if you invest it wisely". I wasnt financial free until my 40’s and I’m still in my 40’s, bought my second house already, earn on a monthly through passive income and got 4 out of 5 goals, just hope it encourages someone that it doesn’t matter if you don’t have any of them right now, you can start TODAY regardless your age INVEST and change your future! Investing is a grand choice I made..

Wachovia was a mess...whenever I called them I was transferred around for an hour...this happened four times and I never got anywhere. They didnt want to deal with me so I had to get, help from Schwab to get my funds sent to Schwab....I had got go far up. In the company to get the perfect person to,do it who wasnt going to take the run around from Wells Fargo. I used to have a personal banker many years ago, retired now. I have a system in place with my bank abroad to write checks on Schwab. I use my debit card easily, aboad now issued by Scwab. I have had no,issue with Schwab but my patterns have been the same for decades now.

Standard Chartered Asia Miles Card in Hong Kong is pretty good. Even HSBC Visa Signature. If you are Hong Kong based, you can redeem Cathay Pacific miles at a pretty darn good rate. For example. I can fly in business class from Hong Kong to Mumbai for 50000 miles roundtrip. It would cost me 1800-2100 dollars otherwise. The reward rate works out to 7% approximately if I'm using the SC Asia Miles card on online expenditure. 4.66% on POS transactions. And if I use HSBC visa signature on overseas expenditure, the reward rate works out to around 10%.

Schwab is good not only for the ATM reimbursement, but also their FX rates are about 1% only. I think the problem you had with them is a problem with all US banks and especially credit cards. If you tell them you no longer live in the US they will close your account. Don't rely on any one bank or brokerage. Have at least, two debit cards, two credit cards, and some cash when you travel. My number one credit card is the Fidelity 2% cash back on everything and it goes right into your brokerage account. No expiration on points or having to request your rewards type nonsense of other cards and no yearly fee. Also, their FX rates are about 1%.

@Dennis Durkop As long as you have a US mailing address, I don't think you should tell them you are living overseas. If you are living out of the US permanently they will figure it out eventually if you are using your debit card and logging in only from outside the US. If you have a few different accounts with different companies, you can use each of them for a few months each per year. Don't get stuck relying on any one bank/brokerage/credit card. Always have a backup.

For keeping a foothold in the U.S. banking environment and Transacting from all of South East Asia, Oceania, and the EU - I recommend CTBC Bank (Formerly China Trust Bank) out of Taipei, Taiwan. Subsidy locations in the Philippines, the United States, Canada, Indonesia, and bank officer presence in Singapore, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Vietnam, London, Bangkok, Hanoi, Beijing, Manila, and Los Angeles (their US based subsidy bank is a FDIC US bank). They don't hire and fire willy-nilly. I still have the same Account exec that created my account 22 years ago.
Side note: With respect to VPN - Major VPN providers are easily identifiable by banks and other financial institutions. Mainly because the IP blocks from these VPN providers are known, and financial institutions are sensitive to logins from multiple IP and MAC addresses. *Very sensitive.* The far superior method is to get a low cost Virtual Private Sever (VPS) from a (preferably smaller) US hosting provider with a static IP. Use 'Remote Desktop Protocol' (RDP) - make SURE to use Two Factor Authentication for RDP sessions - to remotely control this U.S. based virtual PC. This allows the banks network security systems to detect a consistent inbound domestic IP/MAC address, like a normal customer that logs in every day from their home PC.

Andrew I have a question. What have you found to be the best way to send money from a U.S bank to say European banks? It does not make sense to pay high fees to use Swift codes which are hardly supported in the U.S. banking system. Primarily paying on investment property, these high fees dig into profits defeating the core purpose. The recipients will not use Bitcoin.

CapitalOne used to be one of the best for travelers. Unfortunately, in the last 2 years they've gone downhill. From what I can tell, OTP requirements have practically killed offshore banking for expats. My CapitalOne cards are basically useless other than at ATMs and occasionally I can make purchases in shops if I use the PIN.
Sadly I think the days of traveling around the world on a shoe string are over. Say hello, to the post-9/11, post-corona security and safety obsessed society where everything is monitored and controlled.

Don't forget the apps they install on your phone. The app is always the last step after you got the account but is equally important. I was overseas and the app stopped working because I put another sim in it. This auto blocked my internet banking as well. I phoned the bank to remove the lock and they said only way is to come into a branch. So the app really sucked. Also if you are a nomad what sim do you use for international banking. It's not like you can do a sim swap in a foreign country.

The solution is don't use the app. Banking worked fine 10 years ago and there were no problems. Along came banking apps and OTPs and suddenly a simple transaction to buy a flight home is like pulling teeth. Unfortunately, 2020 was the year they started making apps mandatory. It's a joke.
I've heard stories about Thai police catching foreigners in the wrong place at the wrong time--they take your phone, open the banking app, see how much you have, and then take you down to the ATM to withdraw a hefty bribe.

Great topic for a video here and just a recommendation video for the future. You should do a topic video for DAPTs. A popular technique of domestic asset protection trusts (DAPTs) and “trust decanting.” DAPTs allow people to put assets in a U.S. trust for their own benefit and then protect those assets from future creditors. Traditional trust law prevented someone from shielding assets in a trust, if they continued to control those assets and used them for their own benefit. Decanting, for its part, is a maneuver used to change the terms of a supposedly irrevocable trust by removing the trust’s assets and transferring them into a new trust, typically in a state with laws that provide for maximum asset protection and opacity and no state taxes.

I've been living overseas full-time for almost 4 years now. During that time I have never had a problem continuing my banking relationship with Schwab. Now, that being said, I have heard 2nd and 3rd hand of Schwab closing some expat accounts. My opinion is that these were likely newer customers with smaller balances that opened their accounts solely to take advantage of Schwab's free services, i.e., free ATM withdrawals, free wire transfers, etc. Schwab is a a publicly traded, for profit company. They are not going to retain customers who do not generate sufficient revenue to cover the cost of the "free" services, nor should they be expected to.

What is the "sufficient revenue" generated by you? Do u provide that "sufficient revenue" by having that account ? How much is that? Does Schwab offer free services volunteerly to their customers and clearly state the expected "sufficient revenue"? All banks keep money for customers because they need money in order to lend to others. Customers take risk while depositing money into banks.

Before commission free trading came to be I generated good revenue for them. I don't how they make money off of me now except for paying next to nothing in interest on my idle cash.
