  • Blacksmith Forging 12th & 15th Century Wrought Iron Arrowheads. A day in the forge with blacksmith & arrowsmith Will Sherman of medievalarrows.co.uk as he recreates three types of 12th and 15th Century wrought iron arrowheads - the originals of which are to be seen at the Museums of London, Blandford and Winchester.
    Each arrowhead in this video is identified by either the Museum of London's or Oliver Jessop's typology:
    First head: Jessop's type M2 mid 15thC now at Winchester Museum (original find Wolvesey Palace); second head: Jessop's type MP3 12th Century now at Blandford Museum; third head: Museum of London Type 16, 15thC.
    Filmed with kind permission of Honeybrook Farm, Dorset.
    Located in stunning Dorset and close to the New Forest, Honeybrook Farm is the site of an evocative, working forge set amidst Victorian farm buildings.
    Many thanks to Will, Helen and Harvey Sherman.
    I'm Mick Grewcock, retired from business and now self-learning the arts of longbow- and film-making. Join me in my light-hearted quest for knowledge as I learn to combine the ancient woodworking craft of bow-making with digital videography and film making - I'd be delighted to have you for company on this bizarre journey combining digital and primitive technology.
    I have a deep passion for the medieval English longbow, the great warbow - the powerful version of the English longbow that earned its fearsome reputation during the Middle Ages, notably the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries on the ferocious battle fields of France and England during the One Hundred Years War (and in the hands of Robin Hood too!). It is an iconic weapon - and to this day, exudes heritage and awesome power.
    Lots of bow making on my channel - do browse, view, like comment and subscribe. I have videos on making yew, hazel, elm and blackthorn longbows as well as many others related to primitive and instinctive archery, target archery arrow and bow making. In my videos you will see and hear what it is like to self learn bow making. I am self-taught as a bowyer - learning the hard way to work wood to make a bow - and still discovering every day. Sometimes I fail, sometimes I succeed; but I'm always learning. I also explore the UK's rural landscape, sometimes in search of bow making woods, discovering survival skills, sometimes in search of the glories of this landscape.

      Evening Andy. Always a pleasure to hear from you. Hope you and yours are all well. Have you been on your adventure? Will we be getting some videos? Yes, Will's forge is awesomely evocative - and it was a delight watching how brilliantly he crafted the heads whilst patiently putting up with me, my dog, cameras and lights! Stay well and safe Andy. Best. Mick

    The underwater sequence of quenching, the slow motion lead ups to the barn and the forge, all the camera work from under the blacksmith and the forge, plus the music, etc. So we'll done. It kept me glued to the video. Your becoming a real artist Sir.

    • @MickGrewcock
      @MickGrewcock  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Grinding wheels have been used for centuries. The wheels were stone and very heavy and powered by hand or foot. I don’t know how far back in time grindstones existed but I expect they existed in medieval times.

    Hello, Mick. Can you help me, if you have time? I want to buy a camera to improve the quality of my videos (and photos). Using Gh4 and Gh5 so successfully, which one would you advise me (quality / price)? Is the slow motion on Gh4 good enough? I can find Second-hand GH4 + Panasonic lumix vario 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 lenses for 650 euros and a Panasonic Lumix GH5 + 12-60mm f / 2.8-4 ASPH lenses for 1750 euros. Both are negotiable. I know the gh5 is better, but I do not know if the price difference justifies it. Do you have any other suggestions canon or nikon? Thank you in advance.

    • @MickGrewcock
      @MickGrewcock  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Rubi. Of course I can help, best of my ability. Both GH4 and GH5 are excellent cameras and either may be a big jump up from whatever you currently have. GH4 gives you 4K, interchangeable lenses, excellent HD and full control over all aspects of stills and movie making. Slo mo was remarkable at the time at 96fps but it's only in HD and the quality is distinctly below say 25fps (normal PAL video frame rate). That said, it was transformational for me. If you want autofocus in video though, forget GH4. It's good for stills but lousy for video when you need constant autofocus. GH5 is a big step up from GH4 with more control, more 4K frame rates (up to 50fps in PAL) greater ISO range and overall better quality of images and video. High frame rates are available in HD up to 180fps (excellent). But GH5 autofocus is barely better than GH4 - though Panasonic have announced a firmware update to improve constant video autofocus in GH5 end October. We'll see. Haven't used any of the lenses you mentioned; I use 14-140 Lumix which is excellent and 25mm f1.7 which is also very good for shallow depth of field on a budget and also Leica 100-400mm which is superb. I suggest you prioritise your particular interests - do you want 4K for example, or is HD and good autofocus more important? If HD 1920x1080 is okay and you need autofocus that is good, a Canon 70D, 80D or even an EOS200D SL2 all have good autofocus and HD video. I don't think any Nikon can touch Canon for AF. I sold all my Nikon gear (a lot!) to invest in GH4 etc. The Panasonics have flip out screens (vital in my view for self filming) both support 4K (which I wanted but remember you need a powerful PC to edit 4K), have good slo-mo, excellent stills, are very robust (mine have been all over the place and are about to set off with me to India), support external microphones, have Wi-Fi and a pretty good app for control via a smartphone. My only gripe with Panasonic GH4 & 5 is AF. I manual focus all the time but that brings some restrictions when self-filming. So I hope that helps Rubi. Ask anything else you want to know. Good luck, Mick

    • @rubiartibus3306
      @rubiartibus3306 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very enlightening. Thank you. I just have a cheap camcorder! I have no control. No shallow depth of field (no interchangeable lenses), no slow motion, no manual focus, no quality, nothing, basically. 4k does not interest me. I'll consider the autofoucus for filming alone (bushcraft and archery) and the flip out screens. I'll also research the 70D and 80D and see if I can decide to buy something. In order to return the favor, check this channel i discovered just now. Seems pretty good. Cinematography and storytelling are very good, just like yours. Nature, craftsmanship, beauty, perfection, tradition .. I'm sure you'll like it:
