I grew up in Utah and I've gone swimming in the great salt lake once and never been to the salt flats (despite living surprisingly close to both) and yeah, I remember the dense cloud of bugs surrounding the shore, as well as how easy it was to float
I live in Tooele right on the Salt Flats, and you have to be careful in the salt flats. For one, you can get sunburned on the bottom of your chin and up your shirt because the UV rays bounce off the reflective salt, and you will get tons of salt on your undercarriage of your car, if you don't get that off it will rust within days.
Masquerola yeah, i always wonder why all his videos are so short yet they take forever to be produced. Not to mention the cost... I would honestly like to know the reason for the shorter videos
It's much better to produce solely the objectives of his journey rather than some sort of documentary of him on the road, in my opinion. Because that's what his channel is about in the end, the final objective of making something, along with how he gathered the resources, any more than that and I would think most people would tune out, as the video wouldn't reach that point fast enough. I really like the current format, so I guess that's why I am particularly adamant about this. A format change wouldn't mean I stop watching, but that I would have to skip to try to get to the point which I find I do with a couple of other TH-camrs who really stretch out their content. I wouldn't think given the premise of this TH-cam channel that people would have the patience to watch a full documentary about gathering a single resource for his final product.
Thank you for making this video. In my 3rd grade class, we do a unit on the Great Salt Lake, Lake Bonneville, and we do a science experiment floating golf balls in salty water. This video helps the students get a better idea of what the locations look like.
How To Make Everything Your channel is incredible man! Thank you for producing such a high quality videos. I really hope that you get all the success that you deserve.
Those flats, and the mud under them, domed the infamous Donnor Party. Their wagons sunk up to the axles in that mud, and it took them a full month to cross them. By the time they reached the Sierra Nevada's, it was too late.
The flyover at 0:12 and again at 3:16 are the ponds for western zirconium (WZ) which is located next to compass minerals. These ponds are not for salt they're just for the stuff WZ can't dump down the drain. Compass mineral's evaporation ponds are located northwest of WZ's ponds.
i remember a few months ago you replied to me on one of your reddit post saying you'll be extracting magnesium chloride from Utah so you can make tofu. Is that still planned?
I collected a ton of brine with the intention of hopefully extracting the magnesium chloride. Haven't figured out the details to that quite yet however. We also collected another compound (gypsum) that could also be used as a tofu coagulant, so we may end up going that direction if the magnesium chloride doesn't work out.
im not sure i would call going to the glitter pit collecting gypsum that's like going to one of those sand covered pits they have at museums that have the dinosaur bones and saying you dug up a dinosaur
How many pounds of salt did you collect from the salt flats and the great salt lake? Are you keeping all of it? If yes, what are you going to do with it? Thanks for sharing!
I filled a 2 gallon container with salt flat salt and extracted maybe 2 lbs of salt from The Great Salt Lake. I'm looking into extracting some of trace minerals from the salt lake brine and potentially using one of them as a tofu coagulant in a future episode. Not sure what to use the salt flat salt for, but general salt is a commodity that shows up in almost everything we make, especially foods.
the end music is very similar to the level up music in Swords and Sandals 2, (good video.) wanted to ask if the Salt Flats salt would be contaminated since they allow cars to drive on it? (might try to analyze some and see what's all in it.)
I wonder; will the salt flat salt be safe to consume? With all the vehicles that have driven on it over the years, it has to have picked up some contaminations from the exhaust and the like cars put out.
Make a site with the look of an inventory with all the things you managed to make and when you click on a certain material or item it shows you how you can make it.
We drove back, so didn't have to worry about the TSA. We did get stopped by the police though, but fortunately they didn't ask about all the buckets of minerals in the back of the car.
I know it's been a while since you posted this (outstanding!) video, but I'd love to know what you thought about the quality of the salt once you completed the evaporation process. Clearly, directly off the salt flats was a fail :-D As a recent SLC transplant, I shared your reaction to the horrors of the brine fly-infested southern shores of the lake!
hey1 I'd love to see 1. what the different salts taste like ( I know there is only one type of "salt") and 2. how healthy is it do do what you did, (i.e. collect salt either from the ground or lakes or the ocean) due to potentially harmful contaminants..
They actually extract minerals from the salts, and despite this the salt hasn't been reduced to any measurable amount. The Bureau of Land Management has taken measurements since 1988 and concluded in 2006 that “despite brine withdrawal for mineral production, neither short nor long-term measurable changes in salt crust thickness could be documented."
How To Make Everything . I believe your statement about the salt not decreasing significantly over the last few decades is inaccurate. Look at aerial photos of the salt in the 60s, 70,s, etc up to today and the area covered by salt has decreased. I have witnessed a decrease in the thickness of the salt myself over the last seven years. I have heard the mining company and BLM claims that all is good. The state of Utah and every organization outside the mining company believes that if some significant changes are not made by the mining company that the use of the salt flats will soon be gone. This has happened in 2014, 2015 and was only marginally better in 2016. We don't want the named to be changed to the Bonneville Mud Flats.
Morton Salt mined the salt from the flats for decades, until they were ordered to repair the damages. The flats had reduced in size. But that is different from mining the water, by capturing and drying the water.
You should see if you can get Toyota to sponsor your work, I am sure the fact you are driving a Prius C all over the place would be some pretty darn good PR for them.
Anyone else get a little salty when he took the salt off the ground, "it's not like that salt is ever going to go back there, there's just a big mud splotch in the middle of this big salty beautiful piece of history and sciencey time passing..."
+Lushelieve The salt gets replenished. It's been extracted for mineral production for years with no noticeable decrease to the thickness of salt on the flat. That small hole will be filled the next time it rains, if the wind doesn't fill it in first.
I remember that you once introduce a book about surviving the post apocalypse, but I just cant remember the name of it.Anyone remember it, I only remembered that it has a red cover......
We're going to do a taste test comparison video at some point in the future, but straight from their sources I think the mined salt definitely tasted the best.
Just remember to wash your car really really well after that trip. Personally I'd make at least 2 passes through a drive through car wash. Having everything rust would be bad and all.
If you had tried to swim, you would not have been able to sink. The salinity makes it too heavy for a human to sink in it. So heavy, that in '83, when it flooded, the railroad tracks floated away on the wooden ties under them.
kungfupanda it rusts in the presence of water. Rust is ironoxide which means it reacts with oxygen and water needs to be present. That means it is gonna rust since there is water in the air
Just mine the salt from the internet. So much easier and could have saved so much time.
prepare for 1000+ thumbs up
Aw shucks guys this is my first top comment, I'm just a simple farmer tending to my memes.
Primarch Lionheart *goes on Overwatch*
Adam Duong not as bad as league (holy fuck the salt in there tho)
Mr. Krebebs Rlly? Play freaking CSGO
Rip camera man
I grew up in Utah and I've gone swimming in the great salt lake once and never been to the salt flats (despite living surprisingly close to both) and yeah, I remember the dense cloud of bugs surrounding the shore, as well as how easy it was to float
Since you use transport to get everywhere, how about you try make some sort of biofuel?
Uioman Cannot This would take a damn long time, but how about he make a car? The engine and everything
OOF
Man I just love seeing all these places that I've been too before.
A salt lake forms when a lol player takes a shower.
John Stavrinos but it's also toxic
And boiling
I love the internet
and somehow spills out of the shower because they are so tilted
yeah, every set of millions of years

Yass! Another HTME video! Keep up the great work pal!
The amount of work put into this 6 minute video... You could make a documentary!
Masquerola yeah, i always wonder why all his videos are so short yet they take forever to be produced. Not to mention the cost... I would honestly like to know the reason for the shorter videos

From my house, google says I could get to the Minnesota salt lake in 3 hours and 24 minutes. I could visit my aunt in Montevideo on the way back.
Cadwaladr You live in Uruguay?
Making potholes with Andy Episode 1
That's what I was thinking!
Yay another episode! ❤
AAAOOOOO WWWWWAAAAOOOOO! ANOTHER AWESOME VID DUDE!
I love this channel.
i love utah!! beautiful salty desert and mountains!!! aand lots of smog. a lot of smog
3:27 We both live in Minnesota, but I'm surprised you haven't been on worse beaches here XD
The salt flats are beautiful. Sometimes they are dry, as shown. And sometimes it is a huge lake about six inches deep.
Was I the only one bothered at the fact he dug up some of the flat
King Elii I was too, he was damaging a great driving surface, he basically made a pothole in a racetrack
Yeah I live in Utah that did piss me off like leave it alone it’s unique.
Fortunately for you guys, it will fix itself. That's what's so great about the salt flats. It's not like it's permanent.
ya bugged me to
No that’s the whole ass reason I’m in the comments
i remember a few months ago you replied to me on one of your reddit post saying you'll be extracting magnesium chloride from Utah so you can make tofu. Is that still planned?
Isaac Duncan i think he might do it with codys lab
I collected a ton of brine with the intention of hopefully extracting the magnesium chloride. Haven't figured out the details to that quite yet however. We also collected another compound (gypsum) that could also be used as a tofu coagulant, so we may end up going that direction if the magnesium chloride doesn't work out.
How To Make Everything U should talk to cody from cody's lab about that!
im not sure i would call going to the glitter pit collecting gypsum that's like going to one of those sand covered pits they have at museums that have the dinosaur bones and saying you dug up a dinosaur
lol 2:40 When being a cameraman trying to get a cool shot, goes wrong...
This channel is getting bigger and bigger slowly
The bugs at the salt lake are brine flies
The More You Grow yeah and they are annoying as frick
Smh. Now I'm going to have to go to the salt flats and fill in that hole with my western family table salt.
How many pounds of salt did you collect from the salt flats and the great salt lake? Are you keeping all of it? If yes, what are you going to do with it? Thanks for sharing!

Yessss a new video!!
These videos have more production value and quality than some fully funded tv shows. And people say that youtube has no more quality creators...
Incredible footage, good job!
the end music is very similar to the level up music in Swords and Sandals 2, (good video.) wanted to ask if the Salt Flats salt would be contaminated since they allow cars to drive on it? (might try to analyze some and see what's all in it.)

This is better than discovery channel
Make a site with the look of an inventory with all the things you managed to make and when you click on a certain material or item it shows you how you can make it.
Have you tried digging in LOL for salt??
I wonder what other chemicals and impurities are in the salts you've collected.
Make a complicated bowl of ramen or pasta/spaghetti
And make rice noodles!
Did you get stopped by TSA again?
I'm pretty sure they drove this time
We drove back, so didn't have to worry about the TSA. We did get stopped by the police though, but fortunately they didn't ask about all the buckets of minerals in the back of the car.
How To Make Everything Why stopped by the police? just wondering
We were going 1 mph over the speed limit and he was bored
Did you cop an actual fine for that?
How do you get that amazing aerial and panoramic footage? Do you use a drone?
I been left for dead 😂😂😂
The water on the shore is normally contaminated, if you want cleaner waters you have to get closer to center
I know it's been a while since you posted this (outstanding!) video, but I'd love to know what you thought about the quality of the salt once you completed the evaporation process. Yay history on my state!
Make a small house
that would be so cool
A youtuber called Primitive Technology has done that a few times already.
Jbaltus Stuff I was totally about to say that he should partner up with Primitive Technology!
Falcon yassss
how about a small garden shed
Amazing videos
we making salt lakes now? cool
You should come up to Alaska and learn how to make reindeer or buffalo sausage for your sammich ;)
Would the salt flat run out of salt in the future if enough people used it continuously? (Like stepping on snow, except its salt.)
MrPorkchop the salt can't just disappear, it would just move

How To Make Everything Mmmh I see...
The caviar of content is HTME.
Why isn't the salt from the flats used to make salt?
Or is it used already? I've only heard of the flats being used to set land records.
When u get the notification and click as soon as it comes up but there's already 150 views
Hey guys from England I'm back again
My father set a land speed record with a Pantera de Tomaso on Bonneville
How did you get the dirt out of the salt flat salt?
Did you need any permit to mine the salt lake?
How about if your having a little cut on your skin did you getting in to the lake and touched the water or something?
Try the spiral yeti in Utah
Salt is not the only thing at the lake there is also brine shrimp that is one of the reasons why it smells
Can you please try Next collecting salt from the dead sea
You should try the dead sea!
How do farmers grow crops on the edge of the salt flat .... as this story of the missing kid and his farm on utah and nevada boarder .
What are you making with the salt?
We're just gathering ingredients now for future projects.
French fries.
I remember that you once introduce a book about surviving the post apocalypse, but I just cant remember the name of it.Anyone remember it, I only remembered that it has a red cover......
Probably called "The Knowledge: how to rebuild our world from scratch". It's a pretty interesting read.
Can tears be used instead of brine
Hey but in your opinion which salt tasted better or had a finer quality
We're going to do a taste test comparison video at some point in the future, but straight from their sources I think the mined salt definitely tasted the best.
How To Make Everything Thanks also keep up the great work I love your vids bro
HOLY CRAP! HE'S IN DAVEY JONES LOCKER!!
Can you make bobble tea ? 🍵
Ah, man, I miss Utah.
not sure what is lol about that....
how dry were your legs after stomping through the lake?
This is where they film all the car commercials that are in the middle of nowhere with this white ground
HAHAHHAHAHA THE CAMERA GUY HAHAHAHAHHAHA
Hey did you go to tremonton?
Nope, the closest I got was Logan, UT
RIP cameraman, you will be missed.
2:43 I was like...how much salt did he eat?
Those are not bugs in the water those are brine shrimp.
Nice
Just remember to wash your car really really well after that trip. Personally I'd make at least 2 passes through a drive through car wash. Having everything rust would be bad and all.
2:43 It's Ethan
let's hope the next speed record won't end tragically exactly in that hole...
let's never forget the best source of salt. TH-cam comment section

1:40 2:10 2:30
2:44 ethan?
+Dr. Phill On pills Chris...
Next time just mine the LOL community
The smell at the great salt lake is from brine shrimp which some idiots released into the water
I miss the old format where you would choose a single commodity and gather parts for it video by video and put it together at the end
I live really close to redmond. GO REAL SALT.
I hope you at least recrystallize the salt before trying to make anything edible out of it...
Yep, definitely going to do that to get any dirt out of it.
and other heavy metals
Your not supposed to dig the flats
True but he also probably ruined the bottom of his car with rust
The illuminati salt does not cause rust...
salt does make rust form quicker, but there still needs to be water involved. lets hope he didnt leave it caked on there
Coolnventions it replenishes every spring...
kungfupanda it rusts in the presence of water. Rust is ironoxide which means it reacts with oxygen and water needs to be present. That means it is gonna rust since there is water in the air
Is that legal?
