The old Integral Designs Mk IV mountaineering tent was just like this. The purpose behind the internal pole system is that in a bad storm you can crawl in and set it up from the inside, and not risk losing your tent or freezing your hands in high winds. Takes practice, buts it's a great idea.

I really want to give that a try. I'm sure that will make an interesting video. I've already learned a few tricks after a few setups, but I haven't tried to set it up from the inside yet. Thanks for posting feedback and for tuning in.

Like the colour.., those peak vents to me should be made to close if in a blowing snow storm.. excellent quality I’m sure.

I was a bit surprised that there is no way to close off the vents. Worst case scenario would be horizontal rain in a gale. I don't know how strong the wind would need to be to drive rain into the vent system. The mesh is very fine and would probably pack with snow in a ground blizzard. I don't think it would be a big issue as long as the tent is cold. I'm betting that Black Diamond has tested the tent under extreme conditions, so I'm going on blind faith that there won't be any major issues. Thanks for posting and for tuning in.

Great tent. I had the 2P and decided to go with the 3P.. I prefer more room and the dual side doors. I used the tent in heavy snow storm.. 2.5 feet wet heavy snow loading and it stood it ground no problem. Also had it in 40- 50 mph winds and it did not budge. Its a great storm worth tent. The vestibule is well worth it if you plan on being tent bound for any amount of time during a storm.. especially if 2 people.

Thats a great report on your experience. My old Winterlight has been my tried and true 4 season, storm tested tent for years (has withstood a 60 mph winter storm) and I was looking for a free standing solo tent to take its place. Once you have had an experience like that in the winter the thought of getting caught in a winter gale in a typical tent is frightening. Thanks for posting and sharing your experience.

A while back I owned a similar mountain hardwear tent. It had a similar interior pole design which I also didn't like. It was hard to line up the poles properly. The concept behind interior poles is that in an extreme wind storm, you can crawl inside the tent and set it up from the inside.

I definitely want to try and set up the tent from the inside just to see how hard that would be. I almost had a tent blow away from me as I was setting it up a few years ago. I was on the side of a mountain and a gust came along before I had a chance to get the snow stakes set. My skis were off and the snow was too deep to walk in so there was no way I was going to be able to chase it down. I was able to grab it as it lifted off the ground.

For a long time the default color for winter tents were either orange or red, the idea being that there was a physiological effect that made one feel warmer. I guess black diamond didn't get the memo :) At any rate, it matches my coat and my eyes.

Tom I wanted to thank you for your advice on getting some skis that would help me. I know this is probably not the place to do it but I do not know how to contact you any other way. I live in Thermopolis and ask about stable skis with that turn better than my Fischer S 88's. You suggested more of a side cut like the Fischer 98's and explained a good many things to me. After talking to as many ski shops in Wyoming as I could find and trying to explain that I was looking for skis that were stable with some ability to turn I finally found the Sports Lure in Buffalo and he listened and had the same recommendations as you. They did not have any Fischer 98's but did nave the Fischer 112's. Long story short thanks to you for the education and help in getting some skis that work much better for me. I Fischer 112's are really fun to ski on for me and I seem to be much more educated than I was before. It is fairly hard in skiing to find someone that understand older gentlemen, such as myself, that do not have the need for speed but do like stability. By the way if you need good geologic advice Luke at the Sports Lure can help with that also.
    Thanks again Tom!

I'm so happy that you are set up with skis and boots. I myself have been skiing wider skis as I age. They are more stable and that helps a lot. I see that Jarred posted a video today and he was out on his Fischer 112s under some pretty harsh conditions. th-cam.com/video/eZ_mamRnNqs/w-d-xo.htmlsi=srjn7eIN7O0DHJJt Again, thanks for letting me know and I hope you have a great week.

You will get years of use out of that item!!! I have the First Light, with over 15 years on it. Used it on solo trips in all weather conditions. BD makes some great gear. Cheers!!!

That’s not a 2P tent in my book. You wouldn’t be able to get 2 narrow pads (22”) in it side by side. And it’s kinda heavy. The Mega-Mid gives you sou much more, especially for winter camping.

Yes, I think it would be a squeeze for two, but maybe warmer. That is the tradeoff. I don't think it is long enough for a tall person as well, but I'm only 68 inches tall. Thanks for posting your thoughts and for tuning in.
