Although most verbs are negated with 没(有) in the past tense, it's interesting that both 知道 and 认识 are negated with 不 in the past (as well as the present).
So 我不知道 = "I don't know" or "I didn't know"
and 我不认识他 = "I don't know him" or "I didn't know him"
