  • Take a look inside the beautiful Secrets Papagayo Resort, Guanacaste, Costa Rica. On the first evening of our vacation, the howler monkeys came out and put on a show, just outside our bungalow. We stayed in a tropical view bungalow, just above the spa. You will see views from the shuttles that pick you up at your door and shuttle you to and from the main area. There was not a bad view anywhere in the resort. While we did not have a direct water view, we were close enough to walk to the unique black sand beaches, in just a matter of minutes. As you can see, at full capacity, there was always plenty of room at the pools and beach area. The wild life was abundant and entertaining. We enjoyed our stay and look forward to returning. The atmosphere was relaxing and enjoyable and the staff was personal and happy.

There are many excursions to book outside of the resort and there are many activities within the resort. As for nighttime, we went to dinner and came back, but would hear the shuttles running pretty late. This resort is fabulous, no regrets! I do recommend going down to the beach to book excursions and cabs, you get more bang for the buck. We regret not booking everything there. We learned from other people on our excursions. The resort-paid excursions are double the price. Cocoa Beach is a beautiful 30 minute cab ride from the resort, there is so much to do in that area!

@@DawnMurphPhoto Hello! We're going there in October for our honeymoon and I found your great video! When you recommend going down to the beach to book excursions, what beach do you mean? I know there is a private beach in the resort, but I don't think you meant that one... Thanks a lot, you've been very helpful so far! :)

@@soniap86 In Costa Rica, all beaches are public; by law, the first 50 meters measured from high tide is considered public land. Therefore, resorts cannot restrict access to their beach fronts. The resort has employees on the beach, so there is no threat to safety, and it was not crowded with locals. The advantage is that locals can sell excursions down at the beach, and they are less expensive than the excursions sold by the resort. We booked a rainforest canopy hike near Arenal (which I HIGHLY recommend) through the resort. We have no regrets about that decision. It was the highlight of our trip. With that tour came a lovely dinner at a beautiful lodge that provided us the most spectacular open and unobstructed views of Arenal. That view exceeded our expectations! It was a three-hour drive over, an all-day hike, then you get to change into bathing suits and relax in a private outdoor hot springs spa. I understand that the public beach excursions offer natural hot springs but are not confidential and do not come with a luxurious dinner with amazing views. However, the cost is 50% less. We met a couple on that trip who had booked an excursion to Nicaragua down on the beach. The resort talked us out of going due to refugees at the borders. The couple said the refugee camps were an unbelievable sight to see, but they never felt threatened. I am very disappointed we did not go; they got to go to Masaya Volcano National Park! Toward the end of our trip, we went to the beach to see what local day trips were available. We ended up booking an affordable little day trip over to Coco Beach, about 30 minutes away. It was a quaint little coastal village with cute shops and good food. We also booked a zip-lining excursion through the resort. We were the only people on the bus trip, so the driver took us on a tour of the area on our way back to the resort. You will save money by booking at the beach, but you gain some perks by booking through the resort. And FYI, when they say you can only wear closed shoes on the rainforest hikes, they mean it. You either buy some uncomfortable shoes or sit out. I bought the horrible shoes! This is a lot of info, but I hope it helps. I would go back to Costa Rica every year if it were up to me. Congrats on your upcoming marriage and enjoy your honeymoon; you chose well!

Do you have a shot of the view from your room we are going in July 2018 & we are staying in a tropical view ocean suite .. just curious

Many of the scenes are shot from our room/bungalow. We had a tropical view, only a few feet away from having an ocean view, but honestly, it did not matter. The lush greens and beautiful flowers, combined with the abundant wildlife made up for it. All the shots of the water, seen in the video, are what your ocean views would be. Some of the rooms are higher up on the hilltop and have a better-elevated view. Its a rainforest, you will appreciate the jungle environment as much as the ocean views. It is such a laidback resort, rustic in some ways, quite luxurious in others. I am jealous, I wish I were going in July! Go to Arenal National Park and see the volcano! It is beautiful!

If you watch the video, you can see me opening our patio doors and stepping outside. You will be able to see our view. We stayed just above the spa pool area. Most of the shots were taken from the back of the open-air shuttles that run throughout the resort. All routes from the rooms to the main pool and restaurant area has the beautiful ocean view!

YES! We did the all-day trip to La Fortuna and Arenal National Park, and it was worth every dime! We hiked through the rainforest and did the canopy tour. We booked through the resort and paid double what they sell them for on the beach. However, we were treated to a wonderful dinner at a beautiful resort in La Fortuna, with breathtaking views of Arenal. It was a nice relaxing treat after a long day. My only regrets is the hot springs experience was man-made, unlike the one booked at the beach. You won't get a mud bath or natural experience, but the hot springs facility is very nice with showers and lockers so you can change into nicer clothes for the dinner. If you do this tour, take tennis shoes. When they say closed shoes only, they mean it; athletic sandals do not work, and you will be forced to purchase very uncomfortable cheap shoes! (Speaking from experience!) There are deadly ants and snakes on the tour, and you just cannot take chances. We saw them in person, but we were on a trail filled with trail guides and other employees who work ahead of the tours, therefore we never felt unsafe. We did book a trip over to Cocoa Beach, from the beach tours (these are individuals who sell tour packages down on the beach, pretty cheap and you can negotiate). It was a little over 30 minutes away, and we spent the afternoon there and just went to their tour pick-up spot when we were ready to come home. It had lots of souvenir shops including this one place that sells exquisite handmade jewelry for a reasonable price; I did a bit of Christmas shopping there! The owner makes the custom pieces while you shop! We also went zip-lining! We booked that through the resort, but you can book these cheaper on the beach. There is one zip-line tour with a concrete waterslide! I do not recommend. Everyone we talked with who did that, hated it. They said it was very bumpy and painful. Many had scrapes and bruises. I am so jealous of you guys! I wish we were going this year!!
