Rick Martin returns to Casper, Wyoming, an unwelcome place because of his reputation as a gunslinger. He has several friends in town, including Marshal Bat Davis and hotel owner Jim O'Hara.
While visiting his mother's grave, Rick sees a sign next to his mother's grave with his name on it; There is also an open grave ready for him. Bat arrives and Rick informs him that Tom Quentin, an outlaw they have traveled with in the past, and his gang of fifteen men are on their way to get what they want from Casper. Bat tells this to the city council and tries to form a team. Although Rick wants to stay and help, the authorities insist that he leave town by midnight.
Rick goes to his ex-girlfriend Laura Mead's farm to ask her to marry him and move to California, but she is engaged to a wealthy council member Canby Judd.
Rick learns that his mother was cheated out of his farm by Judd and was murdered by him. After a fistfight, Judd recruits gunfighter Lem Sutter to ambush Rick, but when Sutter dies and Judd lies about how he happened, Bat has no choice but to arrest Rick. Bat tries to go after Quentin, but is shot. The townspeople are now begging Rick for help. He manages to kill Quentin in a fair fight, and kills Judd as Laura is about to shoot Rick in the back. Rick and Laura pack up and head to California.
