La plus belle voix de sopranos ❤c'est la merveilleuse Joan Sutherland la stupenda j'adorais cette sublime très, très grande chanteuse et grande dame elle était la meilleure actrice et soprano avec une très rare exceptionnelle splendide voix je suis toujours amoureuse d'elle j'ai tout ces disques ils ont tous magnifiques.

I was fortunate to be in the audience at her very first Merry Widow performance here in Vancouver. One bitchy critic said her singing this role was 'like using a sledgehammer to crack a walnut' LOL
It's often rendered as Vilia the Witch of the Woods..but it has hardly no bearing on the action of the operetta. Its just a nice song she decides to sing in the evening. It has a life of it's own outside the drama.
Sutherland's voice at this late stage of her career may be bordering on a wobble, or, more appropriately, have a beat at times, her diction may be mushy (even in English!), but still, there is no other soprano to compare in modern times. Here is a singer who really knows HOW to sing, how to support the breath, how to insert little coloratura flourishes along the way, and who is truly capable of legato singing in its purest form, without even a hint of forcing the voice. We shall not see or hear her like again.
This is a terrible performance. Joan Sutherland was one of the greatest sopranos that ever lived, but not here. She never should have sung this, so late in her career.

You must seek out her work at an earlier stage in her career to fully appreciate just what a once-in-a-century vocal phenomenon she truly was.

Only trouble with Joan Sutherland is that you can never make out the words. Beautiful voice though.
