I went to a local dressmaker and sewist to make me a personalized sloper! We had two fittings and she gave me professional flat pattern pieces and a sleeve! Worth it for me to not have to fit myself, since I have kids and barely any sewing time as it is.
I would love to learn pattern drafting, please do videos on this Edit: I'd rather watch you explain it than try to find new channels that I might not like
I know this is an older video but you saying "put me in the background like a podcast" cracked me up because thats exactly what I do while I'm doing some sewing project lol
Hi Bianca, I am so glad I stumbled across this video. It answered all of my many questions about this kind of project and was crystal clear!! Many thanks! I have eyelet, dotted swiss, and embroidered white-on- white waiting to be transformed into this or similar lovely pattern.
I am super interested in sewing but have limited experience. This was exactly what I needed to see! You certainly made sewing my own vintage styled clothes seem attainable.
What’s I love about this video is seeing the same problem solver mindset that I have! Thank you for not cutting out all the bits about how you may adjust the “correct” technique.
I have pattern drafting books, but watching you alter and manipulate patterns in your videos has really helped concepts click for me! Thank you for going into so much detail and using your knowledge to teach others!
Really great video, thank you for making it! These kind of videos are very helpful for self-taught seamstresses like myself, so please do keep 'em coming. :D Looking forward to the rest of your sewing projects. Cheers!
I had this saved in my watch later list (I am often too fatigued to watch long videos in my rest time), and I came across it again today. I'm planning to make a very similar 1940s blouse for this summer, so knowing how poofy your sleeve head turned out etc. was very helpful, thanks!
i cried tears of joy for this almost hour and a half video of yours, and as someone who plays with sewing it was amazing :D so thank you for that you said you like playing with darts, so maybe lil crazy tutorial of that?
Bianca! This was just a gift 😭😭😭 thank you so much Btw the mind reading continues! 😳 I have a dress with the same exact neckline and a couple of days ago I was wondering how could I possibly replicate it and I had no clue. This video is perfect (and I watched closely every second of it, no podcast mode) it's very clear and even as a newbie I managed to follow and understand every step.... at 2 am in the morning. I really think I might try to do this as my next project once I finish the dress I'm making. I think I'm going to love any video you'll make, pattern drafting should be fun! Even understanding how to change the features of your basic pattern is *exciting* and priceless. ❤️
Hi Miss Bee, it took me all day to watch and also learn from you today, as I had to do my housework eg; washing clothes and dishes, mowing lawns and cooking dinner, baking banana cake in a roasting dish size all before the fams gets home from work, but in my breaks I continued on my quest to learn sewing from you, from your TH-cam CHANNEL. I am starting from the beginning, so now I'm going to draft up a bodice pattern according to my measurements close to your style, new word for me is" SLASHING", sounds cool as word. Thanks Miss Bee you're the BOMB!!! all the way from New Zealand.🙏🙏👍👍❤❤
I’ve tried my hand at drafting my own pattern pieces, but it is a bit daunting. I’d love a video looking into how you would suggest going about it to make a sloper!
I have trouble seeing exact colour on exact colour with my old eyeballs these days. Best thing i ever bought was a magnifying lamp. Ring of LED lights around a magnifying glass on a flexable post. I find it invaluable for cutting tricky button holes or doing itty bitty whip stitches. Or unpicking! Yeah, mostly unpicking 🤦🏼♀️ Your blouse turned out lovely! You make moving darts look so easy!
Just gone over this video again. Just to say I tried and tested the dreaded buttonholes and it still chewed my fabric up 😭 none the less I love the content 👌
You should take a picture of the garment and stick it into your bag with your pattern and your technical drawing. I have watched you design some truly lovely tops, very informative. Thanks again.
Thanks for your tutorial on the 1940's Blouse. The video was long but very informative with lots of helpful hints and I watch the full video. I am just trying to find a video on how to make a sloper for myself so when time allows please do one. Thanks for your time.
I enjoyed watching this video and learned a lot. I have been sewing since 1970, however, I stopped sewing garments at some point when fitting became a nuisance. Watching your video has given me a renewed interest! I have never changed the darts as you did to create the fullness in the neck. I was amazed that you did not have to use interfacing for the buttons and button holes. I probably would have, and then it would have caused the facings to show and then ruined the look, so I am glad to know I can go outside my usual thinking and NOT use interfacing! So you can teach an old dog new tricks! Your camera seems to do a fine job, I did not notice any shaking or anything annoying. Thank you for sharing! Happy sewing
Thank you Marilyn! I probably "should" use interfacing, technically, but I have a few of these tops and I've always found they hold up quite well even without it so I usually skip it!
Thank you so much for the details on Pattern Drafting adjustments for busts. I’m a size 2 with G cup. Patterns aren’t made for me. Ever. So, thank you for being warm, helpful, and detailed ♥️
Very interesting presentation, the time flew by. There were a couple of revelations: I'm not sure if I am seeing it correctly, but it looked like even armholes and necklines were serged prior to sewing. I didn't know that was a thing; I thought they had to be raw and then trimmed right down after being seamed, and then finished, perhaps with clipping done also. And I thought there was a strict rule about always using interfacing when making buttonholes. I have to disagree with the closing comments about the delicate white blouse not matching the style of makeup. There really should not be strict rules about that. It adds a bit of frisson when unexpected, unconventional things are put together. It was a cool look.
I just discovered your channel, and I see that theres not too many sewing tutorial! I think you should do more of these, I have learned a lot already !! Keep doing a good job!
This was so interesting Bianca, I really enjoyed it. I used to make all my clothes when I was younger but I haven't sewed anything for years. You have really inspired me to dust off my machine and start a project. Many thanks - and I would love to see a video on pattern drafting as you explain things so well xx
Enjoyed this video. Leaning how you moved the dart fullness to the neck line of the bodice and add fullness to the sleeves was very helpful. I'd be very interested in seeing how you make a bodice block. 👍
I just found you (your channel rather) about a week ago. And I love it! This past weekend I wanted to tackle a 40s style blouse and picked up the same pattern you show (Simplicity). Of course, I found this video today. Thank you for creating!
Thank you, I enjoyed this project from start to finish. usually a charity shop recycler to vintage styles i have started to draft and work from my own bodice block . Thank you for explaining the dart amending i now realise how much i can do using the slash technique Your are very clear with your explanations so i do not have to keep rewinding, i can just keep enjoying your tutorials. Thank you again, loving the butterfly blue eye colour.
you've inspired me to pick up sew it academy again { online sewing course } I dropped it when it got to the sloper drafting bit because I just didnt have time .
These are my favorite kind of sewing video! As for not using appropriate marking tools, I frequently use microns 😂 through caution to the wind and turn them into design details. Plus anyone close enough to see those markings should be looking at my face. Thanks for showing your resources for pattern drafting!
This is good info. A have a little book with basic pants, blouse, jacket - and it has been quite handy for enlarging some of these vintage patterns that I LOVED, but it only came in 12 (I need 16 or 18.) I have a toddler basic wardrobe and kids to 10 for the same reason - makes it much easier to get a clear image of how to resize, keeping same seaming and fit.
I'm so glad I found your channel. You make pattern drafting a lot less intimidating than I imagined it to be. I just ordered that pattern making book, and I look forward to following your example! Also, I wish we could be real life friends because it's so hard to find friends that sew clothes who are also interested in abuela stuff as well as Harry Potter, lol #nerditry #abuelalife. Please keep the sewing videos coming! 😊
Thank you Alana! I don't have any sewing/vintage/antique loving/nerdy friends offline unfortunately! A goal I have for next year is to get out and make more friends actually!
Thats so sensible. I did needlework at school so the basics were drummed into me but I was such a tomboy, I hated it. Of course, nowadays, because I want to revisit some of my past vintage looks because they look so good on more mature women, I could do with all the help I can get. I think I will try getting a basic pencil skirt that fits well and using that part and a blouse or top with the appropriate darts to use whenever I feel the urge to make something...usually its confined to crochet or a bit of knitting and embroidery but theres no reason why I cant start making some clothes. Of course I want to jump the gun and make a tailored jacket but thats just fantasy at the moment (I actually have one that my sister has in storage at our family home, its beautiful, fitted waist that flares out with a real astrakahn collar and cuffs and real silver and jet buttons from my grandmother c. 1930-40. I also have a beautiful coat thats from the 30s, black wool with silver fox and jet and silver buttons it is like a balloon that comes in at the bottom in black wool. I cant wear them because theyre real fur but I also cant part with them even though I despise the fur trade. Its sad that animals died for those garments and you cant wear them because you dont want younger people to think its ok in any way.) Yeah I would love to make stuff in man made fibres that hopefully dont impact on the planet too badly!
Thank you so much for this video, Its taken me a month to watch it, only because I was saving it for when I had a ton of hand sewing to do. I think its really funny how you say you're lazy. I don't know how many times I end up two days into a project and go "I am way to lazy for this" as I'm doing something like hand finishing a hem...
I started to sew because of silhouette patterns on TH-cam. She goes in depth on grading patterns to personal fit. You video give a different perspective.
I loved absolutely EVERY SECOND of this!! I recently bought almost two yards of glorious plaid silk taffeta and I have a feeling that it will grow up to be a blouse like this, eventually. I’ve never done my own drafting or major modifications but I feel like I’ll start soon.
This was *fascinating*!! The spatial reasoning behind how all the pieces fit together is nuts, so cool. Thank you for doing such a detailed video! I don't even sew but this gives me so much more context for how complex the process is. Can't wait to watch the other ones this summer (and scour your past videos for similar ones!)!
Yes! Extremely interested in a pattern block tutorial from you. There are other TH-cam videos on pattern blocks. However, I think that your specific way of approaching the subject is quite educational and leans toward the application of vintage inspiration. That added perspective gives a great deal of comfort to someone looking to branch into making their own vintage inspired clothing. May I add, this perspective may give stability to someone who has had failures in editing a block to vintage inspired styles. Starting from the beginning is always best.
Loved this! Great to see how the slash/dart process actually works rather than just reading about it. By the way, I'm starting to see why you like white eyelets for summer. Very pretty look!
I love your blue butterfly eye makeup. It's so intense but it's also relaxing, just like the butterfly that inspired it. (I hope that doesn't sound too weird.) Anyway, it's gorgeous & it looks beautiful on you. Thank You for this video & all the others, too.
Love your tutorial! Little tip for the buttonhole stitching next time: you could use the ‘off’ color on your bobin and the topthread the matching color to the fabric and slash the buttonhole from the inside. I love the gathered sleeves!!
Great fabric choice! I find that horizontal button holes on a blouse are much more secure & the button l as likely to pop out. Thanks for another very useful video!
Ok, so maybe I'm biased, as when I had a bob with bangs, I wore my hair like this a lot and love the look. With the structured blouse it gives off very Delia Deetz (add some opera length gloves for extra drama?) or Rachael from Blade Runner vibes, both good, in my opinion. Totally vintage? Nah. Striking and visually pleasing? Definitely!
Fantastic video. Love how you started from a idea, drafted the pattern and then made the finish garment. Look forward to your next project. Thank you. ❤️❤️😍
@@TheClosetHistorian hi, not sure if you have used this for your pins. I get the magnetized screw bowls they sell in harbor freight for my needles and pins also use one for my hair pins. They are cheaper and large than the plastic cover magnets sold specifically for the sewing pins. Just figured i share. Love your channel. I would totally buy this pattern from you if you would customize it to my measurements, I have very broad shoulders for a woman my height and I see the beautiful clothing you sew and I love it all. The 40's styles are so beautiful!
I thoroughly enjoyed this video! My grandma is about to start teaching me to sew (which I am super excited about,) so anything I can learn on my own is super helpful. Thanks and I’m looking forward to seeing more videos like this one!
Wow! What a great tutorial! I have been sewing my entire life, only using commercial patterns and always struggled to make alterations to fit me better. I absolutely loved watching every minute of your process and plan to start learning more about pattern drafting. Thanks for the time you spent creating this.
Loving this and I'm watching before I do a blouse just like the one you showed because pin tucks scare me . I just put together a vintage inspiration housedress and I had to modify the whole side by cutting pinning and self draping because the bust dart was WIERDLY LOW . I learn new techniques everytime I watch you modify tweak N draft patterns . Thank you for talking us through it .I think I might be able to not screw up another blouse after watching . thanks!
I’m a relatively new subscriber and only seen your new videos but this one popped up in my suggestions and I honestly learned so much. Its also amazing to see how much you have grown (as far as the production/editing/ambience) by watching your older video’s.
This video was so helpful! I thought it was going to just be a fun sew along video, but it is so useful. I didn't know about sloper patterns, and you make it seem so easy!
Great tutorial! I'm not ready to draft patterns yet but I feel encouraged enough to alter a couple. Nothing ventured eh! Very pretty blouse by the way.
Yes, I am binging your uploads this easter... I might have missed out on it somewhere, but could you give a tutorial on how to do a full bust adjustment? I am, like you, a big busted gal...
I found this so helpful! I'm an experienced dressmaker and I've done a pattern drafting course but they never told us how to design with it, I didn't know about swinging through dart fullness around! Thanks so much :)
@@TheClosetHistorian I'd be really interested in some more videos about pattern drafting :) I have saved the book you use on Amazon to purchase at a later date x
Thank you do much for doing this video! I always feel like i'm halfway to understanding pattern drafting and dart manipulation when i read different sources, but as a visual learner, seeing what you're doing brings that final "Aha!" moment. Your blouse turned out super cute, and now I'm anxious to try my own!
This was so, so great! Loved all of the detail - I learned SO much from the patternmaking process, amd am super keen to apply some of this to my future sewing endeavours. I would looove to see more like it (though I feel guilty about asking for it, because you have said that they don't do as well for you... but I'll watch them all twice, I swear! 😁👍) I enjoy your teaching style as well, it was fun and chatty but not distractingly so. Thank you so much!
That style of blouse is one of my absolute favorites! I'm so glad it's the style you chose to be inspired by for this detailed sewing vlog because I've always wanted to make one! I'm super late to watching this. Better late than never right? 😅 Also, YES to the video about how to draft a bodice block from scratch! (When you have the time ofcourse. I still need to get to that intermediate level first so no rush!) 💖
This video is awesome! So encouraging!!! I would also love to see how to add Peter Pan collar or other fun or scalloped collars, and how to draft them so they’ll fit. I’ve never dared to because it seems like when you find these random free collar patterns online, they’re not with anything so who knows how they’ll fit onto a blouse ya know? This helps me feel like I understand what’s going on.
So you mentioned saving some time by getting one of the sloper patterns from a commercial pattern vendor and modifying it rather than starting from a blank sheet of paper. The problem is finding one in a larger plus size; most only go to a dressmaker's 22. But I found one today! It's Butterick B5628 (up to dressmaker's 32W) and, although it is considered out-of-print, you can still purchase it through their website. Bonus points for the fact it is currently ON SALE for only $3.99! (Doing the Happy Dance that only other seamstresses will understand.)
This is awesome news! I'm glad there is a pattern with better size range out there. I'll pin this so others can see it
Thanks for the heads up. My wife is a size 26, and had the same problem getting a basic slower pattern.
Happy Dancing with you!

omg, I so need to try it out one day, it’s such a cute cut! for now, I’ll just stick to watching other people do the work, lol
Thanks Karolina! It is a lot quicker and seems like less work when I am not trying to remember to film each step for sure ;)
I was riveted. The slash/dart thing was just damn fascinating. Thanks so much for the education!.
I love slash and spread patterning, it is quite satisfying to watch it transform :)

Yeah I would love to make stuff in man made fibres that hopefully dont impact on the planet too badly!
You deserve a jillion more subscribers.
Well thank you! ;)
Yes yes yes, please, to the bodice-block-from-scratch tutorial. The demure eyelet blouse is adorable.
Thank you Gwen!
Thank you Kelly!
Thank you Sarah! The fabric sounds divine!
Thank you Cait!
This video was awesome, I learned so much just from this one video! Thanks for all the details! And yes I'd love to watch a pattern drafting video! 😍
Thank you Carolina!
I love your videos. Just starting to get the dart thing going on. Hanging with you and it's starting to make sense. Thank you.
Thank you Lynn!
I saw someone mention you on another TH-cam channel. I looked up Simplicity 8736 and found you. I’m very excited to see your videos.
Thank you Monica!
Thank you! I will endeavor to try and figure out a way to make few basic block tutorials :)
Loved this! Great to see how the slash/dart process actually works rather than just reading about it. By the way, I'm starting to see why you like white eyelets for summer. Very pretty look!
Thank you Sherry!
I love your blue butterfly eye makeup. It's so intense but it's also relaxing, just like the butterfly that inspired it. (I hope that doesn't sound too weird.) Anyway, it's gorgeous & it looks beautiful on you. Thank You for this video & all the others, too.
Thank you!
You talk like there's no tomorrow but you are fabulous! xoxo
Thank you. I've always wanted to make a button back dress and since watching this video I now feel I have the necessary knowledge. Again many thanks
Thank you Ann!
Love your tutorial! Little tip for the buttonhole stitching next time: you could use the ‘off’ color on your bobin and the topthread the matching color to the fabric and slash the buttonhole from the inside. I love the gathered sleeves!!
Thank you! And that is indeed a great idea!
Definitely!
Thank you! I agree, I love having a more Blade Runner-ish edge sometimes :)
Absolutely wonderful video...useful information....and a wonderful finished garment! Thank you.
Thank you Susan!
Fantastic video. Love how you started from a idea, drafted the pattern and then made the finish garment. Look forward to your next project. Thank you. ❤️❤️😍
Thank you Carmen!
Truly enjoyed watching your tutorial. I picked up some really good tips. Thank you!
That blouse is gorgeous. I'm so glad to have stumbled onto your channel. You choose beautiful designs to sew.
Thank you!
Yes, you caught me. I'm the one who listens to your sewing videos like a podcast while doing other mindless crafts. 😅 Good stuff though!
Thank you for listening! ❤
I thoroughly enjoyed this video! My grandma is about to start teaching me to sew (which I am super excited about,) so anything I can learn on my own is super helpful. Thanks and I’m looking forward to seeing more videos like this one!
Thank you! Good luck with the sewing adventures! :)
I followed your tutorial and used a floral print fabric. The blouse came out so cute, thank you 😊
Wow! What a great tutorial! I have been sewing my entire life, only using commercial patterns and always struggled to make alterations to fit me better. I absolutely loved watching every minute of your process and plan to start learning more about pattern drafting. Thanks for the time you spent creating this.
Thank you!
Loved this! And it looks just as fabulous with your modern makeup as with your retro makeup.
Thank you!
Thank you Benny ❤
You are great at explaining each detail and every step 😊 thank you for this great video ❤
Thank you!
This video was so helpful! I thought it was going to just be a fun sew along video, but it is so useful. I didn't know about sloper patterns, and you make it seem so easy!
Thank you!
Bianca, I simply love your sewing videos!! It would be a blast if you showed some pattern drafting!! 😍 thank you so so much for sharing your tips!!
Thank you!
Great tutorial! I'm not ready to draft patterns yet but I feel encouraged enough to alter a couple. Nothing ventured eh! Very pretty blouse by the way.
Thank you Margaret!
Thank you Hazel!
Thank you Erica!
Thank you Heather! I love pattern drafting so it is extra fun to share that part of the process :)
Thank you Jess!
Love the blouse and white is my favorite! Great work!
Thank you!
I have the same pattern drafting book from when I was in college. It's such a good book! Love it
Your blouse fits you perfectly! Thank you so much for all of this information.
Super helpful! I just adore all of your sewing videos!
Thank you Susie!
Thank you! I can certainly talk more about collars in the future!
I love the sewing videos! I feel very inspired to start a new project. 😀
Thank you!
This was so interesting to watch! I don't sew myself, but found the steps easy to understand. Thank you for making this video
Thank you!
Your beautiful butterfly eye makeup and anime hair totally match your shirt!
