I love this video. The part where you teach him how to start a fire like that is really cool. I'm a bit of a lone wolf so I'm in the woods learning all this stuff on my own and there's nobody there to see me celebrate 😂
You were fortunate to find an area a little bit raised above all that water. My goodness.Good on you for leaving in the number of tries needed to get the fire started. It is good for people to see that things aren't always quick and easy but may take some time, and of course effort and patience. Great job on sticking with it Steve. Love the oilcloth tarp but gosh 10 lbs. is a lot to haul around. That said it will never let you down. Looking forward to part two. 👍
It took some doing but we finally did find some raised ground that was suitable for a camp. I absolutely love that tarp, and while it is heavy like you said it will never let me down as long as I take care of it. And taking a heavier tarp made me go through my pack and take out things I don't really need. So a win win in my book. Thanks for watching, take care my friend.
Heading out in my pop up camper to Convict lake Ca.Fires permitting. Pavement all the way. Overloaded too much food excess everything. I have a pipe too! I own a tarp now thanks to Bushcraft videos. Will try to practice my knots, tarp set up and knife sharpening. I envy you guys.
Glad you found your lighter mate enjoyed your night in the woods love your tarp set i have not used my tarp for about a year might take my tarp out this weekend with me now atb stuart
Me too, it's not anything fancy but it means a lot to me since my wife got it for me.. I love tarp camping, there are just so many ways you can set up and use a tarp. Thanks for watching, take care my friend.
Haha, well thanks. It works very well if you wanna slow cook your bacon. I like cooking bacon this way, all the fat drips off and the smoke from the fire adds a nice flavor. Thanks for watching, take care my friend.
Really enjoyed this video! Those rainy day fires can be difficult to start, but you guys handled it with ease. I really like your tarp setup, I'll have to give it a try in the future. Awesome work, keep it up! Happy trails.
Thank you very much. Yeah my buddy did a good job on it. I liked this setup as well, I will definitely use it again in the future. Thanks for watching my friend, take care.

He has come a long way with the flint and steel method, he was pretty happy to have gotten a fire from it. We are glad you could come along, thanks for watching. Take care my friend.
Thank you very much. I'd like to make another tarp again myself. I just don't have the time to right now. I'm a big fan of self made gear for me it adds a lot to the experience. Thanks for watching and for commenting, it means a lot. Take care my friend.
LW lies in 5, 4, 3, 2... 04:58 I'm in a wall tent right now on day one of a 4 day deer camp wrapped up with the same wool blanket on a cot in th Catskill Mountains of New York just South of where your beloved Adventure Sworn knife was made. However, I can't wait to get in a good recreational campout. Hunting right now during the October Lull is a lot like actual work and I can't really have a camp like I want to because I'm maintaining a low profile and that means no campfire. But the first thing I'm going to do when I fill a tag is to reward myself with a nice overnighter like you guys are doin' right there and that means my 10X10 oilskin, my wool blanket, my skillet & kettle and a little squirrel hunt. And there will be thick butcher's cut applewood smoked bacon & coffee. I did have my ribeye steak today though. Good stuff there LW. Love it.
Haha, I did didn't I. I'll tell ya man that sounds like a good time as well. I'm really looking forward to winter so I can get out and do some more camping. Loving this oilskin tarp as well I know you and I had talked about them before. It's just a shame that this was the first time I actually camped with it. But that will change this winter. Good luck on filling your tag brother and have a great time. Thanks for watching and take care out there.
Great video guys, could smell and hear the bacon cooking beside the fire. Man the ferns there like here have really turned. I as well have not been out at my tent location since September and that was the first since spring so getting anxious to get out again as well and get the winter camp ready. Thanks for sharing and enjoy. Cheers Fred
You and me both brother. I am really liking this tarp myself and the setup is one I will definitely use again. Thanks for watching my friend, take care.
Nice set up! I definitely need a bigger tarp. LOL! Cool blade! Bacon and steak great eats! I'll have to see how the wool blanket worked out. I've thought of trying one but always end up with the old fart sack. I see you enjoy a good pipe too. I was a big McClelland Frog Morton fan tell they retired. Anyways, Atb Sean
Thanks, it worked out very well nice and roomy. I love that knife I wanted one for a long time before I could actually get my hands on one. If you plan on camping with a wool blanket try to get your hands on a 100% wool blanket if you don't already have one. I like the pipe because my pap always smoked one, he was the biggest influence on my life. He has since passed but when I smoke my pipe it always reminds me of him. Thanks for watching my friend, take care.
Are you a pipe smoker as well? I'm loving my oilskin tarp, I like more "traditional" style of gear. Thanks for your support and thanks for watching, take care my friend.
Good stuff my friend, Looks like an awesome trip. I am ready to get a few days off and get back out in the woods, thanks for the fun video and have a blessed weekend. Dale
It was nice to get back out again. I'm glad you like my videos, it means a lot. It won't be long and I'll be pumping out the videos again. Spring, summer and fall I work 7 days a week more often than not. But winter I have off, so that's when I get out the most. I can't wait, lol. Thanks for watching my friend, take care.
I love camping in the rain, but working in it while soaking wet sucks!!!! love me some Flint and Steel! You did good Steve! Nice looking Camp Brother, but all that water is not good, but it still looks like you had a great time.
I like when it rains at night while I'm under my tarp. But yeah working in it is no fun. Flint and steel is my favorite method I like teaching it too. Camp was pretty nice it was actually nice having all that water around when it was time to put out the fire. Thanks for watching Lee, take care my friend.
Hey Lone: I could make a joke about Steve making a crowd; but really it looks like a great camp. I had a pipe like that in 1977 That's when I quit smoking . Don't regret it but seeing you brings back memories. That steak could feed me for three meals. Thanks Brian 78
It really was a great camp, just what both of us needed. I don't smoke really, but I do like a pipe in the woods. I eat steaks like that one all the time, haha that's why I have such a big gut I guess. Thanks for watching my friend, take care.
Great job on video L/W and nice flint & steel work .... Awesome site for this video ... And that knife is a beautiful looking one ... Great job all around Bro thanks for sharing .....Mark ....And welcome back been awhile .....
Thanks Mark. Yeah he did a good job, I really liked this site and look forward to going back there. I love my new knife I wanted one now for quite a while. Thanks for watching my friend, your comments are always appreciated. Take care.
Nice job with the first flint and steel fire, Steve. Oh no! I hope you find your zippo! Matt smokes a pipe from time to time. Not for a long while though. Bacon! And Steak! It is beautiful there! Really nice set up, LW!
I did find it. I really like smoking a pipe in the woods, it helps me relax and unwind. I really liked this area of woods, looking forward to camping there again. Thanks for watching, take care my friend.
Pipe smoking is something you do in stages. The initial light, either just let it go out or put it out as seen. Your burning off the fluff on top at first. Tamp it down and then relight. That will go out as well eventually. If your in for the long haul, light a third time. Then that's it. Let the ash cool down and clean out gently, or just leave for the next time. I found my dads pipe after twenty years and tried it out. I retired dad's pipe and bought a cheap briar. It's a routine now around four p.m.
Fine, OK then! I've watched 5 of your vids and I'm convinced you know what you're doing. I've camped for 31 years on week-long trips for meat by myself; I really like your truth of simplicity 'ol boy. Just so ya know, I just sub'd and shared with 3 hunting bud's.
Haha, well thank you very much. I would love to go on a hunting trip like that someday. In my videos I try to do just that keep it honest and simple. I truly appreciate you subscribing and sharing my channel with your friends. Thank you for watching my friend and take care.
Thanx for keeping it real, I enjoyed watching and you have another sub now, as for some of your comments below, it's really easy to criticize some people just can't see the good in anything, well done, looking forward to watching part 2
It depends on what kind of tarp you are looking for. If weight is concern you’ll want a sil nylon tarp. Then there is cost. Hit me up on my email and I’ll do my best to help find what’s right for you. thereallonewoodsman@gmail.com
love to puff a pipe every now and then but, I have to tell you, as soon as you said to smoke a pipe, I opened my can of cope right here at my desk. I was almost there, good vid guys.
That depends on a few things. 1. What type of trip your going on? 2. How much weight your willing to carry? 3. What will the low temp be? 4. Your shelter and experience level. I Have used both many times, and I prefer a wool blanket or 2 in some cases. But they are bulky and heavy so be prepared for that. Wool is nice because it allows you to sleep next to your fire, whereas a synthetic sleeping bag would not fair as well. Either way you choose to go is good as long as your out there and having fun. Thanks for watching, take care my friend.
Cotton absorbs moisture therfore cotton charcloth absorbs moisture right out of the air. Keep the char material protected from air right up to the exact point you start with the sparks. Good job Steve.
I smoke a pipe myself and so does a friend. He says that when he's on his deer stand he lights a bowl of vanilla cavendish and gets ready. He says the scent of vanilla seems to call in the deer. All I know is that a bowl of 1Q and mug of hot black coffee does the job of helping me to relax.
Haha, I'll have to give that a try this deer season. My favorite smoke right now is Blood Red Moon from Cult. Thanks for watching, take care my friend.
Looks like a relaxing time in the field and fantastic food. I like that Tentsmiths 12 by 12 tarp, it's beautiful. It's hard to see how far your long fire is from the tarp. I was wondering how far away do you keep the fire from your tarp? If you have ticks in your area, how do you keep them out of your shelter? Great work and thanks for taking us along.
It really was a good time. I'm loving this tarp, they made it just the way I wanted it. In this video the fire is about 2 paces from my bed. I usually keep it one to two paces away depending on the situation. And yeah I'm in Pa and we have a lot of ticks. I don't really do anything to keep them out of my shelter, but I do treat my clothes and gear with permethrin to keep them off me. It seems to work well for me. Thanks for the questions and for watching, take care my friend.
Looked like a "relaxing" time to me. I'm glad you found your lighter. Steak 'n bacon looked real good. I enjoyed the whole video, but I am REALLY enjoying reading some of these comments!!!! Wow. That's all I'm gonna say about that. I reckon when you post a vid that gets 5,000 views in 3 days, it naturally attracts all kinds of people. Big ol' double thumbs up from me Brother!!! 👍🏻👍🏻
It really was some time well spent. I hear ya on the comments man, some people huh? And I have no idea why I got so many views all at once, but I ain't complaining. Thanks for watching brother, you know I appreciate it. Take care.
No, it was just that it was only the second time he has ever tried fire by flint and steel. And the first time trying it was like a year before this. He doesn't get out much due to work and family. So I was happy to help him achieve success with it.
I can assure you it was not gun shots. They make a much different sound. So no there is no cover up going on. I'm very honest and straight forward with my videos, no reason not to be.
I love that thing, it is very warm. Here's the link lrbushcraft.com/lester-river-bushcraft-100-wool-boreal-shirt/ and thanks for watching, take care my friend.
lol...bet you wont cook on a rock again.... only tarp i have is a hennesy hex tarp(it's synthetic...gotta be careful with 🔥) came as a spare with my hammock. now i got a good idea of an alt setup for it. good vid. why didnt you just bring your kni co stove? that would have been 😎
Haha, it woulda worked if my buddy wasn't tormenting me with the smell of his food. I will cook on that rock at some point, lol. The wood stove camping will be here before we know it. But for this one I wanted to camp more traditional in a sense. I really like the nostalgia of this style of camping. Thanks for watching my friend, take care.
make walls maybe and set rock on top. fire would be under...I've done that before..just leave front and back open. if it gets too hot it could crack rock. ye, that basic bare necessity style camping is real down to earth and comfortable. plus got the benefit of traveling lighter. only issue is spiders...snakes make good eatin also. kill and cook snake in next video...also what region of globe you from? im from southeast usa...
I did think of the wall idea, but at this point I was just to hungry, lol. I've eaten snake before I'm not a fan, it was in one of those exotic jerky samplers. I'm in Pa SW Pa to be exact.
i ate kangeroo once from one of them...sweet and tender...i killed a snake once...cotton mouth. i skinned it and preserved it..the meat was so white, clean looking and almost fishlike...but i didnt know if it was safe to eat...so i donated it to the wildlife...im stuck in south cacalac
Yes it was and just what I needed. I stayed nice and warm with just the one wool blanket. The only time I got a little chill was when the fire burned down to coals. But even then it would have been tolerable but we had cut enough wood so I just added some logs to the fire. It was a really great trip, I look forward to the next one. Thanks for watching, take care my friend.
My buddy is wearing brush pants used for hunting and I am wearing Fjallraven vidda pro pants. I wax my pants to help them to repel water. Thanks for watching, take care my friend.
Using the backside of your knife conserves the edge. And it also prevents any possible damage to the blade as well. But in order to use the spine of your knife it has to be a sharp 90 degrees.
1. Do not eat your fork. Kid version of me: "MO-OM! I can't find this thing! Mom: "Did you look UNDER anything?" Kid version of me: *looks under stuff* "Nevermind, I found it!"
I ran out of Founders All Day last night, very good. I have Founders Centennial tonight. Not as grape fruity as ALL day more malty and a bit more of a kick. Both are good boils down to what's on sale!
Why go to bed hungry just because it's dark? And besides eating a good meal right before bed while in the bush is a good thing to do. It not only helps you sleep but it helps keep you warm as well, as digestion raises your body's temperature.
Hahahah. Most the time I don't settle down enough to cook until well after dark. Nothing better than going to sleep in the woods on a cool night with a full belly.
So you went oilskin?! How many oils did you have skins did you have to skin for it? And speaking of oilskins?! Those BLUE oilskin I heard they get them skins from underground?! The comp ones a the rarest of all?!
Guy just a couple Suggestions from an old man Jackpine Savage from N-MN, mylar on inside of tarp & let plastic on opening that you can pull down then just use lg tinfoil behind the fire, your wood will 2-3Xs more efficient inside shelter will be much-much warmer helps dry clothes too! Not trolling just saying, try it out? Works well in MN winter too put pine brought below, I bought some ridiculously cheap alppaca blankets when on a deployment to SA the warmest by far, I also have HB too
Dude, you gotta buy a real US military surplus wool blanket, or look around for one of the European ones. I got this amazing, thick, water resistant treated wool blanket from the US military. Pretty old, but unused, and it only cost like $20. Don't bother with that junk stuff they sell in army surplus. Try to get actual surplus stuff. If it's older, you can get some good wool.
I agree the one I have isn't very good. But I have a lot of other high quality 100% wool blankets including 2 hudson bay blankets a couple witney point blankets and I think 4 pendletons . I take that other one for ground cover or I'll use it as a wrap around the fire. Thanks for watching my friend, take care.
I have 3 of their blankets. My mother in law got them at an estate sale for only $10. And that's not a piece it was $10 for all of them. They are super warm blankets.
lone_woodsman well whatever you do, if those Hudson Bay blanket are the real deal, do not take them camping! They start at over $250 at least, and if you have an old one (you can tell by the stripes) it could be worth over $600. So not camping fare. This wool US blanket I got, I love, because it didn't cost much, so it's ok if it gets a bit beaten up, it's very thick, plus it's almost water proof, and it was cheap! I e seen Bulgarian surplus blankets that are pretty awesome for like $30 in some surplus stores, and online. I wasn't intending to be offensive or anything btw. I just wanted to share that there are real quality stuff, at almost the same price as those horrible surplus store new stuff is. I don't know if you know about Lanolin for wool. Good idea to check out if you're taking it out like that too. Have fun, have a good day!
Oh I took no offense at all my friend. I just didn't want you think all I had were crappy blankets, lol. I was wrong though I only have 1 Hudson Bay blanket I thought I had 2. The one I have I got on a trade from a buddy of mine, I gave him a knife and I got the blanket. Not sure if it's an old one or not, but I still plan on camping with it. I don't know about the whole stripe thing, meaning I don't know how to tell if it's an old one or not. So if you wouldn't mind explaining it to me I would appreciate learning more about that. And yes I know about lanolin and how it helps protect the wool but repelling dirt and water. Although I have never retreated any of my blankets with it. I know it occurs naturally but will fade with time. I thank you very much for your time and comments.
Newbies obviously. They should have brought MATCHES. and all those limbs of different sizes that just need breaking up would make much better, faster firewood rather than sawing/chopping. Live and learn - maybe.
Nope, if you listen carefully you can hear him sawing in the beginning. And the sharp cracks if you listen to them more carefully you will hear they all sound a little different from each other. There would had to have been a bunch of people all with different caliber guns. So no it wasn't gun fire.
thats insane...ive watched lots of these on utube..one stroke an fire...striking 100'x tells me he doesnt know what the hell he's doing..buy this kid a lighter..gotta be a low budget camper
They can do what the hell they want and it ain't like they're charging or forcing you watch. As for those hundreds of one strike flint and steel successes, well truth is sometimes it works out perfect, sometimes it don't. Give it a try and then learn what editing is. At least these guys are honest about it.
You are a good teacher. Thanks for the video!
Thank you very much. And thanks for watching, take care my friend.
I love this video. The part where you teach him how to start a fire like that is really cool. I'm a bit of a lone wolf so I'm in the woods learning all this stuff on my own and there's nobody there to see me celebrate 😂

dude this is the first time in all 5000 videos i've seen that used that awesome idea. the bacon rack. i love it.

God , I hate tattoos.
That's great, thanks for sharing.
Your absolutely correct. I like to twist my thumb while packing it as well, I find it helps to kind of bind the tobacco together.
Thanks for the support, I truly appreciate it. And thanks for watching, take care my friend.
You guys must have been in pretty deep...lol.. I drove the full length of Pa today and I didn't see campfire smoke...hahahaha
Haha, yeah we were in a ways. Thanks for watching my friend, take care.
@@lonewoodsman Question.. looking at tarps.. any suggestions on a 12x12? Not sure where to look
Haha, I love it man. I'm glad you liked the video. Thanks for watching my friend, take care.
Also a tip, use a welders spark, as a backup Flint & Steel
I use to smoke a pipe had my own blend of tobacco from my tobacco shop and smoked Sam Martin pipes-sometimes i miss my pipes
I do enjoy smoking a pipe while I'm out in the woods. It's really the only time I smoke one. Thanks for watching my friend, take care.
new sub here from bushcraft bartons, looking forward to watching your videos, happy holidays lone-woodsman
Thanks for your support, I truly appreciate it. Happy Holidays to you as well, take care my friend.
Honest opinions and if you've done both, I was thinking about ditching a traditional sleeping bag and just taking a wool blanket. Thoughts?
That depends on a few things.
1. What type of trip your going on?
2. How much weight your willing to carry?
3. What will the low temp be?
4. Your shelter and experience level.
I Have used both many times, and I prefer a wool blanket or 2 in some cases. But they are bulky and heavy so be prepared for that. Wool is nice because it allows you to sleep next to your fire, whereas a synthetic sleeping bag would not fair as well. Either way you choose to go is good as long as your out there and having fun. Thanks for watching, take care my friend.
where are you in what state beautiful area
I'm in SW PA. Thanks for watching my friend, take care.
Cotton absorbs moisture therfore cotton charcloth absorbs moisture right out of the air. Keep the char material protected from air right up to the exact point you start with the sparks. Good job Steve.
Your absolutely correct. Thanks for watching my friend, take care.
Forbes?looks wilderrie!
Where are you from Nathan? And yes I was in Forbes State Forest in this video. Thanks for watching my friend, take care.
Pittsburgish.Love the set up
Cool man. And yeah I liked this set up as well, I will be using it again in the future as well.
Take care.
I would like to see some shelter building
I may get into that in some later videos. Thanks for watching, take care my friend.
first time steve built a fire?...
or second, just seems like your still having to instruct him like its gus first time he should know how by now... that my opinion
No, it was just that it was only the second time he has ever tried fire by flint and steel. And the first time trying it was like a year before this. He doesn't get out much due to work and family. So I was happy to help him achieve success with it.
I thought it was gunfire. Just your buddy getting firewood. Lol
Haha, it does sound like gun shots. Thanks for watching Leo, take care my friend.
I can assure you it was not gun shots. They make a much different sound. So no there is no cover up going on. I'm very honest and straight forward with my videos, no reason not to be.
I want that green wool jacket looks cozy wheres it from?
I love that thing, it is very warm. Here's the link lrbushcraft.com/lester-river-bushcraft-100-wool-boreal-shirt/ and thanks for watching, take care my friend.
You guys rock! Keep em coming!!!ps i used to be called one match then i made fire with a bow &spindle now im no match🐘🕊🐾🐺💜💙💚
lone_woodsman it looks a little too big can i try it on lol...counting my favorite boyfriends sweaters
Nice job can I ask what size Boreal shirt you wear?👍🏻
Thank you, the shirt size is an XL. I wish it was bigger around the shoulders though. Thanks for watching, take care my friend.
lol...bet you wont cook on a rock again....
only tarp i have is a hennesy hex tarp(it's synthetic...gotta be careful with 🔥) came as a spare with my hammock. now i got a good idea of an alt setup for it. good vid. why didnt you just bring your kni co stove? that would have been 😎
Haha, it woulda worked if my buddy wasn't tormenting me with the smell of his food.
I've never had that before.
Now that was some relaxation, you manage to stay warm ?
Yes it was and just what I needed. I stayed nice and warm with just the one wool blanket. The only time I got a little chill was when the fire burned down to coals. But even then it would have been tolerable but we had cut enough wood so I just added some logs to the fire. It was a really great trip, I look forward to the next one. Thanks for watching, take care my friend.
What kind of pants are you guys wearing? They look pretty durable and water resistant as well?
My buddy is wearing brush pants used for hunting and I am wearing Fjallraven vidda pro pants. I wax my pants to help them to repel water. Thanks for watching, take care my friend.
What size is that oil cloth
It is 12x12.
Your in the valley
Not sure what you mean. In this video we camped on top of the "mountain".
what tarp is that?
It is of my own design. I had tentsmiths make it for me.
Хорошее видео спасибо.
Рада что вам понравилось. Спасибо, что посмотрели, позаботьтесь о моем друге.
why use backside of knife rather than shear bark off with blade?
Using the backside of your knife conserves the edge. And it also prevents any possible damage to the blade as well. But in order to use the spine of your knife it has to be a sharp 90 degrees.
You dont see many people smoking a pipe nowdays , I used to have a colection of pipes until i gave up about 30yrs ago
I really enjoy smoking a pipe every now and then. Thanks for watching, take care my friend.
Hi,is there a way to get contact with you about business?
My email is thereallonewoodsman@gmail.com. But just a heads up I'm not a review channel nor do I want to be.
Relighting after first light, that's just the way it works.
Yes sir. Thanks for watching, take care my friend.
1. Do not eat your fork.
Kid version of me: "MO-OM! I can't find this thing!
Mom: "Did you look UNDER anything?"
Kid version of me: *looks under stuff*
"Nevermind, I found it!"
Haha, and there it was. Thanks for watching, take care my friend.
I ran out of Founders All Day last night, very good. I have Founders Centennial tonight. Not as grape fruity as ALL day more malty and a bit more of a kick. Both are good boils down to what's on sale!
I haven't tried Centennial yet, I'll have to find some and give it a try. Thanks for watching my friend, take care.
Chopsticks - easier to carve than a fork
If it's that dark you should go to bed a little hungry. You won't starve.
I'm the same way most of the time. Thanks for watching, take care my friend.
if im not mistaken thay tobacco pipe is like standing in front of the fire 🤢🤮🥴
anyways have fun i just about choked out tryin tobacco pipe.
Different strokes for different folks.
So you went oilskin?! How many oils did you have skins did you have to skin for it? And speaking of oilskins?! Those BLUE oilskin I heard they get them skins from underground?! The comp ones a the rarest of all?!
oh yea first time veiwer
These guys make real heritage wool blankets. The price is steap just a warning www.faribaultmill.com/collections/blankets
I thank you very much for your time and comments.
i can smell that pipe from here, black cherry, relaxing.
I love having a pipe while I'm out in the woods. It's very peaceful and relaxing to me.
Newbies obviously. They should have brought MATCHES. and all those limbs of different sizes that just need breaking up would make much better, faster firewood rather than sawing/chopping. Live and learn - maybe.
6
A-hem! Those sharp cracks sounded a whole lot more like gunshots to me....
Nope, if you listen carefully you can hear him sawing in the beginning. And the sharp cracks if you listen to them more carefully you will hear they all sound a little different from each other. There would had to have been a bunch of people all with different caliber guns. So no it wasn't gun fire.
Its so heavy its totally useless
thats insane...ive watched lots of these on utube..one stroke an fire...striking 100'x tells me he doesnt know what the hell he's doing..buy this kid a lighter..gotta be a low budget camper
both these guys should'nt be camping in woods...they dont know what ther doing..
They can do what the hell they want and it ain't like they're charging or forcing you watch. As for those hundreds of one strike flint and steel successes, well truth is sometimes it works out perfect, sometimes it don't. Give it a try and then learn what editing is. At least these guys are honest about it.
