@Corporals Corner... how long does the mineral spirit have a waterproof effect?
What it's flammability after that.. is linseed really better? And I hear never do that in the heat of summer as it can self ignite.
Thanks for taking the time to do all that we need to learn.

This's the 1st time I ever saw you start off to in a barn like structure & wondering if you built that too?
      Kudos if so!
Any price lists you could tack on for the canvas tarp & other things?
I know the spray bottle can run from maybe a bit over 2 to maybe 6.00$ ( higher price courtesy of a place like Aubuchon's) but no idea the rest.

All my life I've water proofed anything I want with 5 parts naphtha and 1 part 100% clear silicone caulking.
Last year I threw out a ten year old tent, but treated the rain fly tarp.
It was tested in my back yard and is 100% no excuses completely waterproof in an all night long storm.
Just mix it up in a 5 gallon bucket, throw in tarp or whatever, soak an hour, dry out on back yard clothes line

I have made several of these over the past 40 years and I finally started using a pump weed sprayer. I use the same sprayer for applying CanVac to my wall tents. I used boiled linseed oil with a rust dye… but I did it outside because that linseed oil can catch fire as it dries. Love your videos brother… I started camping like this when I was 16 and that has been a few days ago. You can’t beat a roll of bank line.

Awesome Video! Love how you showed how to take a piece of canvas and turn it into a tarp and how you made it waterproof. The fact it didn't rain while you slept in it is moot because it did begin to rain and at the end of your video you were in it, dry, while you could hear the rain coming down. As far as the shorts, I will watch any and all you put out. The shorts are a great way to break up the day and they can be refreshers on the little things that we have learned before and you have the ability to teach some that have never seen. For a more permanent waterproofing hob, pour a little drying oil (linseed, tung, silicone sealant) into the mineral spirits. I used boiled linseed oil - 4% by volume, hardened up in four days to nice waterproof oilskin. Next time I will a little non-drying oil ( Tocopherol acetate ) to keep more flexibility. Being a chemist is occasionally useful.

I'll give a 3rd option of water proofing , Normal silicone & white spirits ratio 2;1 2 parts silicone , 1 part white spirits on anything cloth. I used the anti-mould silicone .Weigh equal parts , Mix 2 small tubes or cartridges of silicone & white spirits in a glass container with a screw lid , Mix /shake well until it's clear either brush on or place in a container , completely soak/wet .Then hang on the line to dry. No smell ! I did an old flat sheet ,queen size sheet .It's light weight folds up to very small & does the job. Mine has rope sown around boarder & grommets .Try it on an old pair of gloves & see if it's what you need .

Thank you for another interesting build and great final thoughts. If YT thinks shorts is the path to fortune, why didn’t think about it before TT. Whatever, you post your shorts, I‘ll watch them to support you, not YT. Keep up doing what you are doing and don’t denounce yourself to a YT lemming!

Good video. Suggestion next time you make a painter cover water proof try use odorless turpentine and clear silicone calling 100% . I used it on a 3 man hunting blind and it worked great watched a lady treat a book bag. Keep it up on the video and the builds you are doing

Recently, I've seen several videos using Mineral Spirits or Naphtha as a carrier solvent for tubes of 100% silicone to make "waterproof" tarps so I found it surprising that mineral spirits alone will do the job? What are your thoughts? Is the addition of dissolved silicone a waste or would it fill the gaps between the threads and make it better than MS alone?

    • @RobertLowery
      @RobertLowery ปีที่แล้ว +3

I have not experimented with using mineral spirits only, but I am almost certain that you need to dissolve silicon in the mineral spirits. Mineral spirits, naphtha, paint thinner, and other similarly used chemicals are solvents. Their purpose in the scenario of water proofing is to dissolve the silicon and allow it to be absorbed by the fibers of the canvas. Eventually whatever solvent you used will evaporate and leave the silicon behind. What I am unsure about is if there is any residue left behind by mineral spirits. If there is, it may have some water resistant properties. It is unlikely that any residue will be as effective or last as long as silicone.

Look dude, I know you only have YT data to go off of, and I know you are running your business and livelihood off of this, so you're held victim to whatever the analytics say... but I just have to tell you:
    1. You are my favorite TH-camr, no homo
    2. I think TH-cam is f'king with you and your views
    3. I have seen literally every single video you have made, several of them multiple times.
The skyrim thing was cool. If you find the time, please revisit your old scrapped projects, they all had potential.
Whatever you choose to do, I know it will be to keep the channel alive, so I am grateful. I just want you to know that there are people who eat up pretty much everything you churn out. Thanks for all entertainment and knowledge.

Fully agree. Was even hoping the game camps would become a series. Would have loved to see some Red Dead Redemption camps come to life.

It would likely be easier if you used a paint roller instead. My question is, what is being used as the water repellent. I would think you'd want to use dissolved silicone with the mineral spirits to make it water proof.

That’s what I was thinking as well. Dissolving silicone into mineral spirits is the go to method these days for water proofing a tent, and making DIY waterproof tarps.

Yes. I was wondering that too. I have never heard that mineral spirits would make canvas waterproof. It would probably make it more flammable though.

Good evening, Corporal. Enjoyed today's video - all the way through. Your vids came up next in the queue as well. Went over to Jake's channel, checked it out and subscribed. As always, Semper Fi and keep up the good work.

Home Depot has a 9'x12' canvas dropcloth 8oz w/grommets for $33. A qt of odorless mineral spirits is $9; a gallon is $19. I've seen it done on Townsends with linseed oil using a paint brush. God knows how long it took to dry and how it smelled lol......an airless sprayer would no doubt speed up the process but those can be pricey-ish. I got one on clearance (by chance) for $38.
Your Final Thoughts rings true in a lot of aspects. I'm fairly lazy in some aspects of my life (garage is a mess, basement is barely organized, guns need cleaned) but I never pass up an opportunity to make my wife smile, or fail to tell her I love her and how much she means to me. The last thing I tell my family when I see/talk to them is that I love them. I also try to walk the walk in that regard. Be there for you friends and family if they need help. Support your coworkers. Help a stranger if they need gas money (you have no idea how many times this has happened to my wife and I). A couple bucks ain't much if you have a twenty in your pocket as well. Watching ALL YOUR VIDEOS when they come out and helping support the algorithm for your channel is even better. If you give me a ❤ it means you read it the whole comment instead of not getting past the Home Depot stuff at the beginning lol
Keep up the good work, good sir. I try to watch all your videos when they come out, so rest assured I do my best to help. Catch you later.

Spend a few dollars and get a pump up jug with a spray wand. This won't be the only project it works great for.

sorry Corp, you failed on this one, mineral spirits isthe thinning solution, NOT the water proofing agent, Silicone or Boiled Linseed needs to be added to truly make it waterproof. ive just done a painters cloth with linseed oil, and its in its final drying stages, its been 5 days under the boat shed roof, another couple and shell be bonza beaut mate...
