Just sayin, Mike is a patient and very thorough teacher so that made it easier for her to learn how to drive it. Too bad not everyone gets that level of instruction.
I also have 3 daughters, all grown and on their own. Not a single one of them inherited my love for tractors, mowing or other machinery. Good on Reagan for being willing to learn and congratulations on her degree.
I had doubts when she yawned and checked her watch during the intro, but maybe she had heard these Dad stories a few times too many growing up. Good job.
If I were to answer the, "what is the biggest difference between a an HST and gear tractor" - would be that with an HST, if you let go of the pedals, you stop. If you do that on a gear, you keep going. - Excellent training methods. 👏
And the opposite! I went from a gear tractor to a HST and, when nearing a wire fence, hit the clutch! Needless to say, I didn't stop and instead took out the fence.
@enbrewer Yup, EVERY one is a learning curve. In my 50+ years of tractors, I have only had, straight up 4 speed Geared (many with no syncro) - Well this spring I bought a 12/12 Power Shuttle - Exactly what I've always wanted, but 4 speeds, and 3 ranges, a clutch, and a power reverser, it has taken a few minutes to become proficient. But I love it. Best of both worlds. Forward/reverse like an HST, but constant gear for field work.
Nice job teaching, Mike. As a former educator, I can say it is important to let the student learn "on the job" rather than you showing how it is done.. Learning time is shorter, and learning is better! Nice job, Reagan! Cheers!
Congrats to the recent graduate! With your attitude you should go far. I learned to drive a '63 VW bug, and, yes, they are much easier. I love my Kubota gear-drive MX4700, though.
That was almost the perfect tractor to learn on, only that Massey shift pattern kept it from being absolutely perfect!! Watching Reagan reminded me of my daughter, at the time that she learned manual transmission shifting, I never dreamed that it would lead to her getting a CDL and driving Semi, or Sport bikes, or now Harley's!!!! They really can do it if they put their mind to it!!
Well done to Reagan - and Mike you're a patient teacher! It always amazes me how our cousins in the US are so mistified by the concept of driving stick! Oh well....
Great video Mike. I taught both my daughters how to drive a stick shift. It's special when they want to learn what dad does. I learned to drive a stick shift on a '55 Buick with the starter button under the gas pedal. I've never forgotten the time when I stalled it on a hill and wished I had 3 feet!
Good job young lady!! Wish you well doing the amazing race you got this. I've been teaching my 10 year old Granddaughter to drive my mahindra 1626 shuttle and also mow with finish mower she did very well for first time mowing but Grandpa got pretty tired walking beside her for an hour or so lol Great video ya'll. Thanks for sharing be safe have fun
I personally think it’s much better to learn on a manual transmission. Just to get the feel for the clutch and finding gears without looking at the shifter. I learned stick on a John Deere progator. so hopping right on a manual tractor was pretty simple for me. The biggest difference is learning how to start in different ranges without launching the tractor. You have to feather the clutch differently and be more gentle with the throttle in higher ranges. (Obviously don’t start in high range 3rd or 4th gear) it’s not good for the clutch and you likely will end up just stalling the tractor anyways. Another thing is come to a complete stop before shifting between ranges. Or at least that’s how our John Deere is at work. I would assume it’s the same with other brands.
I have over 40 years of experience driving manual transmission cars and trucks and zero years driving manual transmission tractors. Mine is a hydro. I would love to spend some quality time on that Massey!
Good job Mike! More people should learn to drive manual. Its becoming a lost skill. Your daughter did an amazing job! A little smoother on the clutch release and shes golden!
I learned to drive stick in a 1978 Chevy truck. It had the tightest clutch that I've ever had the misfortune of using. I guess it was because of the little straight six motor. Three on the tree and ease off that tight clutch. Once I had driven it a few times it wasn't too bad unless I was taking off going uphill.
So to teach the new stick driver apply the parking break first, then the new driver won't roll away when they push in the clutch during a moment of panic. 😀 Good video thanks
My poor Dad got to teach me AND my brother to drive- standard- at the same time. Numerous grey hairs resulted im sure! I already knew how to drive a tractor, we had a Farmall A, and an automatic sedan around the property.
I still have two manual transmission cars and a tractor. I'm only 40 but the people under 30 don't know how to drive them. It's an experience. Where at I'm Missouri are you located? I live in Jefferson county and we have a place in Wayne county north of Piedmont.
I had a Ford 3000 with a manual transmission but it had to be in a gear you wanted. I was selling the tractor and the first guy came to drive it and I told him you cannot shift it on a roll. So what does he do going down the road he tries shifting gears and he grinds the gears. So i yell at him and it's like who cares, well I do. The next guy i tell him and he understands and he ends up buying it. So he buys the tractor and the rear blade and I had a cultivar, well he loads up everything on this little trailer. The tongue is almost touching the ground, so I mention to him leave some of it here and come back and get the rest of it. No he doesn't do that! I thought good luck with you. His chains were dragging the ground. Not good!
I have an L 2501. I live on a hilly property. I find myself riding the brake pedal a lot while the tractor is pulling. Think I may be wearing the brakes out.
My transmission is a high and low and has 4 low and 4 high. It has a shift on the left which is a low high and reverse selector. Don’t think I can shift while moving not sure. It is the L 2501.
I was driving a Fergie 20 at 8 years old. clutch and pedal brakes . Got my road vehicle license 12 days after my 15 birthday in NZ. these new tractors have me baffled. they have cabs, aircon, sat navs and steer by themselves. The skill of driving by the sea of your pants has gone into obscurity. A big mistake in my mind
It's comforting to see that after Tractor Mike gets too old to do this, I can still learn stuff from Tractor Reagan.
Just sayin, Mike is a patient and very thorough teacher so that made it easier for her to learn how to drive it. Too bad not everyone gets that level of instruction.
Congratulations Reagan on graduating and learning the art of manual transmissions.

Congratulations Ragan, big accomplishment. Find a career you love and have fun at and work will not seem like work !

That was awesome young lady!
Great instruction dad!

Been there not stopping, first time on a motorcycle, right through the neighborhood before getting off 😊

you and her did a great job
Mike,
Does this bring back memories.

Three on the tree and ease off that tight clutch. Once I had driven it a few times it wasn't too bad unless I was taking off going uphill.
I didn't know there were automatic shift tractors ;). The only one I ever drove was my grandpa's Model G. Good job, next step the amazing race!
So to teach the new stick driver apply the parking break first, then the new driver won't roll away when they push in the clutch during a moment of panic. 😀 Good video thanks
good job ty
I always hit the kill switch FIRST then turn the key off on my dads JD 2240. Thats how this farm gal was taught.
My son graduated MU this year too.
Brave girl letting you film that.
Good job!!!

Sort of like a automotive manual shift - NO not really. Isn't low / low great can't stall it. Great daughter.. Thanks
Next video floating thru the gears.👍

That a girl 👍🏻

Hill-o-phobia with a manual transmission.
A gear drive tractor is “a real tractor”. I and my old Ford 1920 like that statement!
I have an L 2501. I live on a hilly property. I find myself riding the brake pedal a lot while the tractor is pulling. Think I may be wearing the brakes out.

I learned in one day is not that hard.
Always know how to stop a piece of equipment and never assume that people know as much as they say you do. Especially when testosterone is involved.
Mike how about showing used tractor prices again. Your video is outdated, and the salesman attitude comes out of you through that video

I'm just here for the comments and gone. REALLY Mike. LEGS for the thumbnail????? Viewership must really be down.
