Hey Becky, thought I would let you know… you really shouldn’t paint your propane tank a dark color. It should be a reflective white or silver to avoid it building up pressure in the heat/sun. (I work for a propane company here in Texas and we are required to refuse service to any tank painted any color other color but white or silver/grey.). I would check with your propane company before painting it. I cannot be certain on requirements in your area, but it’s worth checking out first, instead of finding out you can’t get it filled when you need it.

I love the green stalk. My husband and I are 70 and have never been able to have a homestead. we do however own our own two-bedroom bungalow, with living room, dining room and large kitchen, with an added-on bathroom as when it was built, they used an outhouse, so you can imagine how small it is. lol we do have a nice back yard in which we grew fruit trees from seeds. we used to have a small victory garden, but I told my husband I would like raised gardens in which we could put in a good area of the back yard, I figure we may not have a homestead, but it is the next best thing. we are completely debt free, so I count my blessings every day. I love following your progress and I learn so much from you.

@@Dranma51so lovely. I’m 66 and last year downsized into my “retirement” 2 bedroom cottage in New South Wales, Australia. Luckily previous owners weren’t gardeners so I had a blank slate on my little property. Last November I installed 4 large raised beds which are producing well. I’m learning about preserving by watching Becky. My goal later this year is to install a small cottage garden (to match my house) in the tiny front space.

Do you put your chickens poo in the beds? When you clean out their area, scoop the poo into a pile to decompose so it's not "hot" for the next year. You can add it to your beds in the fall and by spring time, it will be ready to plant in. This will give you a lot of nitrogen. Chicken poo is high in nitrogen.

You can root the strawberry runners into little plastic cups that you just clip with the clothes pin to the outside of the pockets and you can have the babies grow inside the cups and then you transplant the strawberry babies to a new green stock once they're ready to be separated from the mother plant.

Plant lavender, Russian sage, fox glove, rosemary and catmint by the honey bees. The deer will not eat that and you will have glorious honey. Lavender! Lavender! Lavender! I had a 2 acre garden with no deer fencing but lavender, rosemary, nexican sage, russian sage and catmint on the outside. No deer ventured inside. Try it up by your bees in those open beds. It works!

Feverfew is a perennial medicinal herb that is fantastic for pain relief, specifically headaches. You could transplant them to your bee yard but don't just toss them at the end of the season. And as you know with determinate tomatoes, it will put on a main crop of tomatoes then start dying down so when it starts getting real hot it will be done before the disease and pests can hit it. Now an indeterminate tomato I will trim the fire out of it in our humid climate.

Your garden looks great Becky just a suggestion that I do with my runners on strawberries. I use a hairpin and stick it. Stick the runner on the ground and then put a hairpin over the top. It's like a clip in the ground and it holds that little runner down might want to give it a try.

Becky 😊 I have some Snapdragons that I planted 5 yrs ago in pots. I live in Vancouver, Canada, with a similar climate as yours. I cut them for vases all season, and when they start their last flowers allow them to go to seed. They winter over and I just transplant them into other areas in my garden. For five years I have not purchased Snapdragons 😊

    Hi Backyard,
If the lower beds are more lush than the upper beds, perhaps the fertilizer is being washed down with watering. Just a thought, I’m really not sue. In NewEngland where we lived, I knew.
Here in Florida it’s a whole new game and it’s hard. You’re doing great. Hugs Elaine.❤

When I first started gardening way back in'94, my squash got aphids, so i ordered a box of ladybugs. It was the best thing I could've done. Every year, they came back, and I never had an aphid problem again. I believe in using insects to control insects. It actually works, and you don't risk poisoning people or animals. Good luck and gorgeous garden.

I'm in awe of how far you have come in such a short time! Just stunning! Whatever you decide to grow in the trellis, rose, .... Think how lovely adding a scent to all the rest. Nothing better than the beautiful smell of roses. Unfortunately I don't know names / varieties. I use to get so frustrated trying to get my garden going "early". I stopped fighting it and didn't really start until mid May. And I cut back to more of just what I'll eat. I live in Bremerton and we don't get all that early production others do. So happy for you Becky! 💙😎💚🐸💛🐸💜😎

Hello. I’m a hairstylist and if you use natural hair in your garden where your bees are, the deer won’t eat your plants that your planted. Stop by one of the salons in your area and ask them to save the hair that they cut. But make sure it’s not color treated. Good luck from San Ramon. A suburb in the Bay Area near San Francisco.

That’s funny I just posted tht comment my daughter has fought deer eating her garden for the last 4 yrs I had her do the hair all around her garden and she called me a week later so excited saying how well the hair trick worked she didn’t believe Me lol I can’t believe she don’t remember me doin it when she was little I went to my hairstylist and she would gladly give me the hair.. also marigolds work to but the French marigolds work best because they get so big and bushy deer hate them smell of them they love my hostas so. I sprinkle chili powder on them at the beginning of spring once they go to eat it they will not be back because they remember tht taste or remember the plants are wht they want lol trust me last time I sprinkled was two yrs ago and my hostas are finally doing great now next spring I will sprinkle some more chili power just to keep them away

Hey, sweetie! Probably a million people have told you already, but that front row of snapdragons that's called Potomac, is pronounced POE-TOE-MACK, emphasis on TOE. Like the river that runs from West Virginia through Maryland and Virginia, through DC, past George Washington's home Mount Vernon and on. Maybe you remember the old story about George tossing a silver dollar across the Potomac as a child (complete fiction - it's too far a distance and silver dollars didn't exist when he was a child)? Same river. 😊
Your garden is glorious - a complete reflection of its beautiful creator!🩷

Re check your seed packet for those scarlet runner beans. Ive always seen them with scarlet red flowers. The exact shade pf scarlet can vary from seed source to seed source, but is also suppose to be indicative of missing soil nutrients too.

Crimson clover, white clover and red clover are all great nitrogen fixers as well as lupines. Daddy always planted crimson clover in our garden after harvest was done for the fall and he planted white clover for the spring to help replenish the nitrogen.

I am going to buy the smaller green stalk. Thanks for the tip and the discount code! I live in Florida and the sun is brutal. I do not have enough shade in the same place throughout the day to grow flowers and herbs. The green stalk on the spinning wheels stand is a perfect solution! I have a large patio so I can roll and spin my green stalk around so that the plants are getting the right amount of sun and shade they need during the day.

I'd be very careful painting the tank. Those tanks are painted white/light colors to reflect light to keep the tank from getting too hot and sending the tank out of spec. Depending on the color/design/type of paint used, you're next inspection might see you buying a new tank altogether.
