Ironically, they were fiancés....until Lum discovered that Rei has a one-track mind & he ate the locket she gave him.
Lum was basically dating & engaged to a short-haired pretty boy version of Goku; only instead of turning into a angry giant were-monkey under a full moon, Rei turns into a tiger-ox hybrid when hangry.

This is closer to the manga,the old anime would often add extra scenes to make the episodes last longer,it worked great for the most part though,despite being filler, but yeah I also prefer the 80's version of this,Ataru being disappointed when Lum didn't see him was a nice touch
