    Hi Randy....A quick heads up The ZF transmission in that cool old Jag will go to limp mode with a low-capacity battery which will cause bad shifting bad enough to cause an owner to panic sell.
    So a dead battery will indeed put up a trouble code in the same way as BMW's go to "transmission protection" mode.

    • @jaguarladdie
      @jaguarladdie 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      This isn't the Super V8 model. That would have more plush seating and chrome everywhere on the outside including grill surround and bootlid trim. The grille surround would also be fluted or rippled and not plain. It would also have matchwood inlays in the walnut dash and door trims and the steering wheel vinyl would be matched to the transmission tunnel vinyl trim. These are XJR specific wheels and the steering wheel is embossed with XJR on the horn pad and black in colour as XJR standard. This is not a LWB car. This is a XJR.

    The Jag is worth picking up, it’s low production it’s fairly rare and it’s worth seeing if it is just a battery issue could be just that the fluid needs to be changed out that I found on one of the newer ex JR‘s or if it has a transmission leak, the fluid could be low, which can also cause a problem. Focus a little more in cars in less on trucks. Think you’ll find it more interesting flips.

    Tray under the hood a a tool kit in the UK, storage in the US. Shock tower bushings just dry out and crumble, likely not mice. The supercharger belt is inside out BTW, ribs should be facing in. I had the same issue on my XJR, one key just stopped working. Restricted performance is likely an intake, vacuum issue or oil in the spark plug wells. Trans fault may be the electrical connector, O-ring wears out. Trans electric board is also a common 580 problem. Both relatively easy to work on. I have 3 all daily drivers, they are pretty solid with the right maint. Gotta do the timing chain guides though, upgrade to aluminum.

  • @docgiggles130
    @docgiggles130 ปีที่แล้ว +37

    If the Jag goes for a super cheap price, buy it. It would be worth seeing if the battery is the cause of the transmission issue. What a win it would be if the battery ends up being the problem. It's been sitting for awhile so it can sit a little longer until you have time for it.

    As I`ve told you before, when they`ve had a dead battery, X308 Jags ALWAYS throw fault codes like that up, it usually take 3 or 4 run & drive cycles to clear them. Its unusual for the (Mercedes) trans to die on these, unlike the non-supercharged ones, & that one went straight into gear, so probably fine... That looks like a decent, honest one, I`d be all over it, as a decent one like that with no rust easily get £7-10k here in the UK, & the door can be swapped in a couple of hours, the immobiliser chip in that key is either dead or needs reprogramming. Given it looks like its been sat for years, I`m amazed the fuel pumps weren't seized, it wants to live & obliterate Mustangs again... Oh, & the cubby hole in the engine bay is for the optional tool kit.

    What Robb said. If you can get the Jag battery to charge all the way up, you might clear the faults and be fine. Randy.........I would buy that Jag, even though black cars don't make sense where I live. The interior looks like it is in great condition. The trans could just be fluid or a valve body problem.......yes, Jags had oil leak issues, but the oil level in that one was fine and it just needed changing. The discovery with the key is incredible. You could walk away with it unless a collector has his eye on it. A cool project car. Isn't the cash value based on a stationary vehicle? You are probably the only one who knows it runs. The passenger door is an easy fix. I think some research on the truck engine bay fire might turn up a reason....it is probably a good repair/clean-up vehicle instead of parting it out. The interior is just dirt.

    The Jag is a gift. It's 400BHP. When new, it was the fastest sedan on the planet. ) to 60 in about 5 seconds.) The restricted performance is quite likely the coils. That car is worth a good few bucks just in parts. Transmission fault? Who knows. I had two of these. I am not aware of a common fault on the transmission. It goes into gear. I suspect it is a duff sensor or something trivial, not something major. I suspect the engine alone is worth at least $2000. In the UK the XJR's are now worth $25k if they are in good order. Anyhow, as I am in the UK, it is no use to me!

    I love this series in particular, the x308 xjr, produced from '97-'03. I had 2 in black on black and when they are cleaned up they look stunning, especially in person. It's one of those things that doesn't quite translate through a picture.
    I also had one of the next version that started in '04, the x350 platform. Major departure from the previous years was an aluminum body and frame for weight reduction and strength, active air suspension, stretching the 4.0l engine to a 4.2l, and ditching the ol reliable merc 5 speed trans for a new zf 6 speed. It was faster and more refined, but the old school x308 version like the one you looked at always got more attention than the newer x350 at stoplights and such. Common problem areas were the timing chain guides and tensioner before the '02 model esp. They also have the dreaded "hose of death", a rubber hose that carries coolant to heat the throttle body. Idiot engineers ran it underneath the intake manifold. Not a big deal on the normally aspirated engine, but a huge pain on the supercharged version in the xjr. It will go bad and you will be removing the supercharger to fix it. Loved my x308 xjrs though. Wish I would have been able to keep one.
    The 493hp 2004 mercedes s55 that took their place 4 years back helped with the separation though lol. She's still my daily driver.

    On Jag: Restricted Performance is an innocent error code generated when car is in parking for a long time or in worst situation, a need to change the plugs/cables. Most likely it will clear when you drive it for a few days and normal driving. btw all that it restricts is you can't go above 3000 RPM, but all the moving functions are otherwise fine. That is, you can even drive it on highway with say 2.5 K RMP at 70-80 MPH! only no acceleration.
    The Trany error code also may clear once you drain flush and use a clean fluid/filter.
    But and this is biggy... Scotty says Jags are one the biggest money pit and Jag makers say: The must option when buying any jag is a Mechanician in the glove box! I guess you got it all. Go for it and enjoy the finest Walnut real wood dash you can find in auto industry.

    Everyone swaps out a Chevy 350 in those Jaguars, just because the Jaguar engines are an absolute bear to work on and parts are through the roof. The look of the car is beautiful. If you go back and look at a vintage TV series, that was "The Equalizer" car.
    I like the silver Mercury Grand Marquis with the droopy rear end behind that Chevy truck you looked T after the Jaguar I'd switch out the air shocks for springs and shocks. Maybe a couple hundred for the parts, and an easy swap. It'd be an interesting installation video too - people love those Platform cars (Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis, Town Car) 👍🇺🇸😎

    Watch out for 1998-2000 V8 Jaguar XJs they had the Nicasil(coating comes off from the cylinder walls) issue, same as BMW. Go for 2001 and up, or the inline 6. I had a 95 Vanden Plas inline 6.

    I am thinking mabey it needs the transmission needs the trans fluid changed. The transmission level is checked via the ECU data port. Transmission is possibly a ZF Gear unit.

    I had one a completely dead battery can make the restricted performance on it and What do you mean you don't have the time or money to put it back together it doesn't seem like it really needs anything besides maybe a transmission but you have worth

    We had jaguars and they’ve been some our favorite cars and honestly most dare I say reliable. I had a 98’ XJ8 Vanden Plas for about 6 years and it was one of the most trouble free cars I’ve owned… and a 03’ Stype R it was modified it was fast and reliable… BUT brother owned a couple and had a few bumps. But all in all we’ve been satisfied. Have a 2014 XJR that has been $$$ problematic over the past year… fixing and selling.
    I say go for the old XJR you’ll have fun if it can be repaired for lil money….

    The XJR is my favourite type of Jaguar cars especially the models made through the 80's and early 90's, a black one with the full leather interior and wood dash to me is one of the classiest long distance driving machine's ever built!
