    I would argue that Manual Transmission is where it's at. You can have your smooth, easy to operate CVT. I'd rather have a machine that does exactly what I tell it to do. Nothing does that better in my opinion than a manual transmission.

    I have both, but I have to be honest, I own a 2005 Rincon. It's not the most glamorous of ATV's. My friends on XMR's, Highlifter Editions, Mav's and Rzr's will leave me in the dust every time. But I've lost count of the amount of times I've had to tow them back when their belt bust. I prefer DCT, just hope Honda can find the way to drop it in a Sport SXS and actually be competitive.

    I like the gear transmission. I hate the smell of those belts smoking when they get under pressure.

    I have driven them all from the first rhino to the latest pioneer. DCT all the way. Belts slip, gear go. Its simple.
    Also.. that truck you use to pull your sxs to the trails doesnt have a cvt, why? They cant hold up under stress.
    I will say, the transmission in the P1000 is 1000% better than the one in the P700. It shifts so fast and smooth, the power hits the road immedieatly.
    And don't forget true engine braking. If you have spent time on motorcycles and gone down a steep gravely hill, you know, engine braking is a true advantage. Sit back, feather the front break, and let the engine do the work.
    Just my opinion though, cvt's work for a lot of people and I respect the advantages they offer also.

    I have a 2015 570 Sportsman and I just reached the 100 mile mark. At this point I am wishing for a manual transmission. The CVT is O.K. the things I don't like are as follows.
    1. Going down step hills, I have to gas it to engage the CVT or ride the break.
    2. When trail riding at a low speed, I stop to switch between low and high to keep from burning up the clutch. I also stop to switch to climb steep hills. The fact that I ride with someone who rides a Honda makes this more of a hassle. He down shifts, I stop to move to low.
    3. When in deep water/mud and traction becomes and issue, people tend to tell you "be careful, your clutch is going to start slipping or you will burn it out".
    This is my first ATV with a CTV and to date I have not had any issues, but it is always at the back of my mind.

    I have a 2013 Honda Big Red 700 with the DCT transmission top speed is 55. 3 speed fully automatic shifts like a dream. I like that I can be going down a 15% grade and not once touch the break pedal. My relative has the an older Polaris 500 ranger and I have had to replace the clutch in it twice; the belt three times. He has a Honda pioneer 700 and he hasn't complained yet about it.

    Just picked up my Pioneer 5 Deluxe a couple weeks ago. I love it and I have two Polaris's and 2 Can-Ams as well. Being an avid outdoor motor enthusiast and owning just about every machine out there. The Honda Pioneer is by far my favorite. Smooth easy to handle and most of all quite and comfortable. The Can Am and the Polaris are both faster from 0-50 but the Pioneer ride comfort and ease of use blows the competition away. Also Hondas reliability is second to none and I have been stranded on the Can Am several times due to belt issues. The Polaris brakes steering arms.... So far I put 500 miles on the Honda and it's only getting better with more miles.

    I drove the Pioneer 500 and have to say I prefer the ability to shift through the gears, but in heavily technical terrain I can see the advantage of the CVT. It's just more fun to use the paddle shifters and run through the gears like a high performance car.

  • @WesWilliamsonPage

    The dual clutch is my preference. I like having the option of auto or manual mode on my Rancher. Nothing like being able to hold a gear a little longer when hauling or putting in a lower gear for better down hill control. I also just like feeling of being able to drop a gear and let it rip. Something about cycling through the gears.

    I've been an avid polaris rider for about 18 years, had very little trouble with the cvt belts that weren't an easy remedy. it's a fairly simple concept that has been used for many types of off road applications. One plus of cvt is just that, simple, get it wet, drain it out dry it up n ride. burn it up, turn some screws replace belt, 20 minute fix. Gears are more complex and a whole lot more costly to fix. But harder to burn up or water log. I just recently ordered the new pioneer, my first honda. I am impressed with everything about it. My reason for buying it over everything else, simple, it has all I need that other company's don't have. My wife n I have three children, hence a five seater. can am commander, 4 seats, polaris crew, enormous, all others that accommodate 5, too slow n boring. Honda hit it perfect. As for the gears or belts, drive one and you'll be a believer. And don't forget, with that transmission, actual full hill descent mode when locked in. No utv with cvt belt has that, or auto-manuel switching. Guess I'm a honda guy now.

    I have never driven a big bore ATV or SxS with a manual transmission, only smaller machines...so this may be a bit biased...ha! For pure sport riding, I feel as though a CVT would provide the best driving experience. After all, when your out really ripping on the trail or in the dunes, I think you'd want to be focused on where you're pointing the nose (or rear end lol) of your rig without worrying about shifting gears. That being said, pounding through gears is always fun. I think Yamaha is really on to something with the new YXZ!

    If I had a Sport ATV or SXS I'd probably rather a manual, just because it fun shifting gears and letting the motor rev, but I do all trail riding, long trips, camping, usually in tight technical trails (not sand dunes/fields) So I like the CVT, no hassle at all, and not thinking about shifting gears, I guess it's all what you ride. CVT for me.

    I personally like a CVT. I just think it's a lot easier than anything else out there. As long a manufacturer can make a good all terrain vehicles with good CVT belts that won't burn out quick, I think it's fine to go CVT

  • @Graham905
    @Graham905 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I like that the cvt is simple to use and understand and lends itself better to new or inexperienced riders. modern cvt's are so well tuned and designed that I actually enjoy the riding style of the cvt more than the manual shift. not to say that the gear on gear transmission does not have its place, but my sport utv is cvt driven.

    I work at the Timmonsville plant where these side by sides are produced, and having worked with various cvt setups, I can say the dual clutch auto is definitely a big plus. With a cvt, you'll have multiple maintenance issues regarding the belt and mostly the variator rollers will develop flat spots and you'll lose efficiency and top speed along with smooth acceleration. Other than that, you can depend on the dual clutch giving you YEARS of dependable service with little maintenance.

    Definitely DCT. The feeling of a gear on gear transmission can't be beat by anything else. CVT's can give a vague feeling and your not as connected to the vehicle. Plus gear on gear is more reliable than CVT. That always has advantages.

    Side note to last post, good friend of mine purchased brand new can am commander limited couple years ago. Burnt his belt after just first 100 miles of easy riding. All flat trails, get back to truck and it started burning putting it on trailer. Upon calling can am, my friend was told anytime your on an incline it needs to be in low. lol, guess they always go 60 mph up sand dunes in low. He got back n put clutch kit n aftermarket belt and no trouble since. All company's have problems with belts. Machines are getting heavier and more powerful and we are pushing them harder than ever. But for 20 grand plus, we should expect better from factory.

    Both have their application. Nothing beat my 400 sportsman 2 stroke when it came to whipping the back end around with a handful of throttle and hills were an effortless conquest. But although My old Foreman 500 would wind out 1st or 2nd and sometime third climbing hills and not have the power to reach the next gear it never was outdone in the rugged low torque produced in 1st gear. plus dependability was never an issue. so both have their place and perks/ drawbacks.

  • @Mihebert

    I definitely prefer a CVT, a few years back I had bought a Foreman 450ES and traveling with a group that rides CVT bikes I found I was always hunting gears to stay in the group. I now have a Grizzly 700 SE and a new Wolverine R-Spec, they are awesome for trail riding. My friend's dad also has a Kodiak 450 with over 23,000 km on it and is still on the original belt. Go Yamaha!

    • @gregrowe1168
      @gregrowe1168 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a Grizzly 660 myself(2nd one) and I think Yamaha's cvt system is the best in the business. It always seems to be in the right gear no matter what speed you're going except very slow speeds where you simply shift into low range. Even in high range, it has the power to climb almost any hill and pulls hard from a dead stop to full throttle. Dct just simply can't do that as the individual shifts will cause a bit of power loss. Manual mode can help this obviously but then instead of the computer guessing which gear to be in, its left up to you. Yes, you do have to replace the belt on a cvt machine but they go thousands of miles between belt changes. Dct doesn't have belts but it does have a lot of electronics which can cause problems. Its a relatively new technology in atvs and utvs so long term reliability is a bit of an unknown at this point. I can imagine if a dct system does need work, it will cost a lot of money to fix. On the older Honda Rubicons hydraulic transmissions, that was basically the point when people got rid of them. Once the transmission needed work, it just wasn't worth spending the money. $1500 to fix a transmission on a $2500 quad left most just trading them in.

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Greg Rowe Yep the only good thing Yamaha has is the CVT. The clutching system always keeps the belt under tension so the machine doesn't rev up then suddenly engage...something that Polaris has trouble with even now you would think they would have redesigned their clutching a long time ago LOL.
      I've had 2 Yamaha vehicles and after the horrible dealer and finance experience I'll never deal with Yamaha again, but the machines themselves are good...the Grizzly 450 I had never ran right it seemed like and the CDI was bad in it causing it to randomly shut itself off. The Rhino 700 I had was ok for trail use but was horrible when it came to actual utility use.

    I would say your dead-on with your comments, After drinking the Honda koolaide with 2 Honda Rincon's and trying my hardest to convince other riders about how a gear transmission is so much better than a CVT and more reliable, I finally switched to a CVT transmission and couldn't believe the power band on demand. Iv'e always been a BIG fan of Honda and it's reliability, but the "Thrill of the Ride" just doesn't compare to some of the other competitors. I do however agree that Honda taking the "1000cc" step is HUGE, and looking forward with Honda bringing back that "Sport-Fun" married with its known reliability.

    I'm running 30 inch monster mayhams on my sportsman 1000xp. I've had zero belt issues. I built my own snorkels to bring in lots of fresh air and I think that's the key. Don't get them wet. Also service including washing the belt and clutches with soap n water is very important to make things last seeing that engine oil doesn't wash the clutch parts like a wet clutch Honda style system. Both systems have they're place Honda more hard working utility and cvt for high performance giver caca riding. I like both.

    I think it all depends on where you like to ride. Here in Utah where I ride whether its down around Moab or up in Utah's mountains the trails here are very rocky and for that I prefer a geared machine. All of my utility quads are Honda's with the geared foot shifters and the biggest reason why I like them is for their awesome engine braking and not having to stop to shift into low, just shift down plus they're great for crawling up rocky hills and crawling over rocks. I'm not into seeing how fast I can go down a trail but just like most people I do like to occasionally power slide around a bend on a trail. I'm more for casual trail riding for sight seeing and to take my fishing pole up to a alpine lake to wet a hook. I did puchase a RZR 800s back in '12 because I was tired of waiting for Honda or Yamaha to come out with their own. I do love the suspension on the RZR S and it does great in low range on the trails out here but.... I hate that it has no engine braking and I don't really care for how the 4WD engages. I've often wondered how great that RZR would be if it was geared like this new Pioneer and also had the same 4WD engagement as the Pioneer as well. I believe it would be a real awesome trail machine so I'm hoping a more sportier Pioneer is in the works down the road like the Yamaha Wolverine and with a optional four seater and with this DCT tranny. I'm just about ready to trade my RZR in for this new Pioneer but I'm forcing myself to wait a year or maybe two.

    CVT , its the way to go . A belt is a pretty cheap repair compared to clutch replacement . If Honda and Yamaha truly want to compete they will have to do so apples to apples not apples to oranges ! An over view of the new Honda was nice but its time to see how they will compare to machines that it directly competes against in real world scenarios.

    I have the pioneer 1000-5 and the transmission works good. Noticed at slow speeds it did seem a little touchy on the throttle as mentioned in video. It is more responsive tho then a belt drive. Hit the peddle and the power is there. Drove my brothers ranger and it is a little smoother on the throttle all the way to top speed. However the pioneer can go 60 and the ranger can only go 55. Getting to their top speeds has some to do with the hp difference but I also think the trans has a part too. Just my preference but I think I like the pioneer trans just cuz the fast response. Thanks

    I have been in Hondas all my life! Manuel foot shift all the way to the Hondamatic.... They all were perfect but are mainly designed for work. Yes it's convenient to hold a gear when working hard or cloning but it's nice to just throw it and gear and gaged the throttle without shifting anything. It all depends on what you see yourself doing with the life of the bike. Me personally I like both, at the end of the day I would prefer either a smooth automatic Honda tranny or a CVT. All together CVT I play more thank anything else.

    Depends on the application, I have always owned Hondas untill this summer when I purchased a Maverick XXC, for reliability I love Hondas, I have never killed one and I rode them all the same way a guy rides a Maverick and we all know Hondas are not designed for that. However I love the CVT in my Mav, i've only slipped the belt once and that was more operator error than the machine its self as i'm still adjusting to a CVT. Honestly Hondas Hydromatic transmission was my favorite and I think a tranny like that in a machine like the Maverick would be amazing.

    CVT all way. I know some will disagree but the way I use my 4-wheeler I wouldn't get out of 1st gear and that's no fun.

    I grew up on manual shift atv's...utility mostly. I hate the extra noise that the belt driven units seem to produce at slow speeds! I've also always been scared of them b/c of the potential to get them wet & have issues. I've crossed water standing on the seat of a gear driven atv & kept going on the other side. Had to wait on the belt to dry for my riding partner though. Not looking to do any mechanic work when I'm out...it turns play into work.
    That said, I don't take long trips or ride hard like most guys on here. Anymore I'm riding with my wife or a friend & like to be able to have a conversation, enjoy the scenery, etc so the noise is my biggest factor.

    I really like the low maintenance of the gear to gear tranny, but the cvt pulls harder throughout the rpm range since it's not limited to a certain ratio. I love my gears rarely do I ever want a cvt :)

    CVT is better in most aspects in my opinion, but manual has its uses. I much prefer the footshift in my fourtrax 300, a CVT would rob too much power and take away the fun of driving it, as well as making it less effective for utility purposes. But a big 1000 Big Bore, like a Sportsman or Renegade or what have you, CVT is much better.

    I wish you could fold the rear cage in when the rear seats are not is use. It looks rediculoous with nets swaying and cages everywhere. I love the rear seats fold out of the bed though wish all side by sides did that.

    didnt expect the large amount of people on the cvt side of things in the comments. I guess in the small atv/sxs worlds cvts are good. IMO the dual clutch gear box any day.

    Cvt or Manual, I think both have advantages depending on what you are doing with the machine. I think the best is to have both options available within the industry. Thank you Honda and Yamaha for not just following the pack.

    I would choose gears over cvt because you don't have to worry about changing belts and gears have less worry and are more reliable and come on its more fun too!! And we have a 2013 can am commander limited and go can't press on the gas slow or else it just jerks you forward or shakes if you have can am commander you will know what I'm talking about but that's the only thing I would change about the commander!

    • @1gr8oil
      @1gr8oil 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cole McClure.....I think the only reason your commander is jerking or shaking when trying to move forward, is due to the belt having some "BURNT" spots on the belt. If you change the belt and clean the Sheaves on the drive clutch and Driven Clutch, that will most likely go away. "BURNT" spots on the belt leave small indentations on the belt, so when it begins to grab in the clutches, the belt effectively slips more until the clutches contacts a smooth spot on the belt. To get away from burning belts, it is always a good idea to change in to the low gear if you are moving less than 15 MPH trying to work the machine, like loading onto a trailer, or pulling a big hill.

    CVT is much more enjoyable when riding wooded trails and blasting up hills. I like our Rincon working around the yard but not on the trails we ride, to much of a hassle and it is always lugging or bouncing off the rev limiter.
