Casey, coming from the perspective of a college educated English Lit major, it is my experience that you can definitely learn how to be a storyteller in school. Some people need the structure of school to compel them to explore their creativity and give it form. I think it's important to note that not everybody can do what you did. Also, most people can get loans for school or money from their parents, but they can't get that money to just "live life". I respect your opinion and your passion for what you do and how you do it, but I don't think you should discourage young kids from attending school, even if you don't think it's valid. Creativity is given opportunity to manifest in school.
Additionally, how you credit the support and structure of a family to your success is similar to how most credit the support and structure of school. Ok, I'm sorry. I'm done now haha.
Casey forgets the voice he has when it comes to his viewers. But this is a great comment, school is truly helpful. Not needed, but a good choice for shaping your life. It just depends on your circumstances. Casey probably feels the stigma around college is not fair... That "you need to go to college to get a job" and he's so successful. Casey is the definition of independent and motivated, it's different for him.
Casey is not against college just specifically film school. I don't think that reading books and talking to your teacher is experiencing life. Casey's point is that if you have nothing interesting to film then the film will be less interesting. I agree with you that there are may people out there that have funds specifically for school and that they should use it towards an education. You can study poetry but you will never be a good poet unless you practice writing and have things to write about.
Many successful people dropped out of school too. Nothing wrong with education & one can learn be educated while gaining experience. I get where he is coming from, given the choice it's better to invest the resources on film making first & if you succeed then why invest the time to have your natural talent changed? If you don't succeed the go to school after trying. I am sure there will be 50/50 for one or the other. Obviously both if possible would be best.

No one here understand my point. Casey used to upload early in the morning. I can totally understand if he's REALLY busy considering he just came back from London. EDIT: My point is Im hoping vlogs go back to being out early in the morning.
I'ma huge Neistat fan, been a subscriber since the very beginning because I loved the editing style and the story telling ability etc...But having gone to film school, I can say that, while not necessary, it definitely teaches you about the inner workings of the industry. Now going to film school with the intent of doing purely TH-cam is a dumb idea unless you're really bent on making extremely cinematic videos or short films that may go to festivals before TH-cam. I learned so much about proper script writing, lighting, grip, sound, all that jazz. Film school is not only about learning all this stuff, but networking. I met SO many amazingly talented people that I likely would have never met otherwise purely because a lot of them are introverts who tend to keep to themselves.
I 100% agree that you don't need to spend ridiculous amounts of money for film school because most of it can be self learned through, ironically, TH-cam. BUT learning those things from industry pros is invaluable.
Networking is the biggest reason to go to film school to be honest. I mean, I met and am good friends with Cole Seger, Bob Seger's son. Cole also went to my film school.
My chances of running into, and becoming friends with Bob Seger's son ,outside of film school, would have been almost impossible.
There are reasons to go to film school, other than for the information, which is insanely helpful in itself.

To begin with, i would not pay 1000 up for a Boosted. You can make your own for way cheap, and as such, you don't have to bother with their outdated technology. Not to mention that, at your very finger tips, there's more information on RC forums than you can assimilate in a lifetime.
You can really make a bulletproof board with off the shelf parts. And with the arrival of Arduino on the market, you can make a remote that far outstrips the hand held annoyance, that is Boosted's remote.
After testing one for a few months, as far as i'm concerned (and take it from someone who has mid to advanced experience in RC and advanced to expert in CNC and machining in general) their product are the pre-order games of self propelled boards. Actually it's far worst since, even if both groups would have you buy what is essentially a polished prototype, at least in the gaming world you can get updates.

Casey, I could actually post this on any of your vids but I just wanted to take the time to tell you how i love watching your vlogs. You are so upbeat, kind and respectful that it's very refreshing and such a pleasure to watch in this day and age. My best too you and your family.
The other day i went skating with shorts and low socks and i decided to speed down the rink. My skates were loose so i fell and fell so hard and i skidded on my naked knee down the rink. Its so swollen I cant even describe it. A lesson I have to say is to be Extra Cautious and make sure to always prepare for the worst. Wether its bringing your phone charger on a trip or putting on your seat belt in the car, its very important that you do these things. Casey is right, living life is what gives you expericence and is what makes a good storyteller.

Tip for young people getting into film making, TAKE A THEATRE CLASS. it’s so helpful and it costs 1 semester of your time. Those classes help you learn how to be yourself, act, and mine taught me how to film and edit and get good angles. Best choice I’ve made in a long tinet

5D IV ins't the benchmark, not for Video Production that's for sure. Its a minimal upgrade to Mark III. The GH4, A7sII and A7R are way better for filmmakers.
not so fast. the new clever live view phase detect AF is a pretty huge deal for someone who shoots like Casey. before you could only get that in APSC cameras or huge production cameras.

I don't watch your vids everyday because I'm busy with college; instead I binge watch them when I get a chance. And each time I do, I'm inspired all over again to do more. I've got 6 videos ideas that I need to do but I'm been busy since I just moved out of state and I'm living by myself for the first time. I'm also living with 3 other roommates. It's an adjustment but I just want to get back into making videos and feeling comfortable doing so. When I'm not creating, I feel a hole in my heart and that hole feels really big right now. I just want to continue to grind with my vids and grow. Just in a frustrating state at the moment.. idk. (I really just needed to share what was on my mind)
