For me I think Colossus 13, the flying one in the sand, was my favorite when I first played. I just remember it being a cool feeling teaming up with Agro just to get onto it and then holding on for dear life when it started doing barrel rolls. Just felt so epic

You should remember, this game was originally made nearly 20 years ago. It's one of the all time greats, and a beacon of video game artistry and although the entire game is one big cautionary tale against desperately clinging on to things, (I'll try to keep myself from jumping into an endless diatribe about all the Classical Japanese themes dripping off this game) but I can't help but attempt to relive that first time playing this game by watching others play it. Thank you for putting this up here for others to enjoy. I'm very glad you liked it and spread the word.

I bought this when it came out and the girlfriend I had at the time REALLY wasn't into videogames, thought they were silly. I came home with it and popped it in the PS2. When the intro was playing she was passing by and mentioned that it looks really pretty, and sat down to have a "quick look". She sat down with me and watched every single multiple hour session I had and ended up crying at two points. Wander is the name of the character you play as. His name is never spoken in the game but it does appear in the credits under voice talent. For a game that's almost 20 years old, it continues to be played, explored, scrutinized, studied, discussed. That really says something. "ICO" & "The Last Guardian" are also by Fumito Ueda & his team & are highly recommended. "Praey For The Gods" is a nice spiritual successor to S.O.T.C. & is also recommended.

@@MarkusAxunIllianus Now ICO hit me like a truck. After beating Shadow of the Colossus with my little brother who was 6 at the time, he got so hyped by the game we used to play "Kill the Colossi" and he climbed on my back as I was a colossi and he was Wanderer. We played for as long as my strength and lungs let me since he was on me going all around looking for 'sigils to kill the colossi'. Then, couple of years later I found ICO existed and got the game... my little brother was like 8-9 and still climbed on me to play 'Kill the Colossi'. When I played ICO, I saw my brother in the main character and through the game the story made me genuinely made laugh of happiness but also broke me into tears real hard. Ico, and Shadow of the Colossus both single handedly inspired modern gaming.
Miyazaki credits both games for inspiring the idea of Dark Souls. Ico got him into game development to begin with.
If you've played Ico and SotC, you can see the clear inspiration, and what Miyazaki borrowed for Dark Souls. The sparce checkpoint systems from Ico, the Giant bosses like Shadow, the deep story telling that you actively have to search for and piece together yourself, and SOSOSOSOSO much more.
The dungeon designs, and maze like architecture.
    I could go on!
SotC is the first Souls game in spirit.

The premise of ICO: there is a tradition in the land. When a boy is born with horns, he is considered cursed, and will be taken to a mysterious castle to be sacrificed to its dark queen...
ICO was released many years before SotC, but is set hundreds, if not thousands of years afterwards. Totally different game too - much simpler, and probably won't get a cool remaster, but we can dream!

watching this reminds me how far videogame conventions have moved since the mid two thousands. if you see a structure and think "i wish i could climb that," you should really try climbing it. if agro is running around you during fight, he's doing that to make you think "maybe i should ride agro in this fight.' if a colossus has glowing body parts then you need to shoot them. if a colossus isn't remaining stunned for very long, then make him fall further next time. I am genuinely impressed that you managed to mount so many of the colossi though such consistently non-traditional means!

This is one of my top three favorite games of all time.
I let a friend borrow it many years ago, and he actually gave it back saying he couldn't finish it because he could not in good conscience continue killing the colossi. I wish he had kept going because it is not something that gets rewarded in the end and it is part of the journey, but I understood why he felt that way and it's amazing that a game can make you feel that much.
I also think the fact that Mono does get resurrected is such an interesting way to end things.
Of course this isn't the end though, it leads into the game Ico which came out first and I had played first. Also another very good game. This whole world they created is fascinating. If you have a chance I recommend playing Ico because it does add some context to what is going on here!

There is so much symbolism in this game and in this ending. I like that nothing is defined. A great work of art is like this. The strength of the horse, the child with its innocence and beginning of life, the fragility. The feminine strength, the awakening from a great sleep that can represent so many things, the size of the colossus that we can see as power or egocentrism or whatever. The shadow that inhabits a hidden side of each of us, the sword (courage) that shows the way, the unknown land itself that can represent an unknown place within us. At the end, we have a large staircase leading to a beautiful garden. This in itself can be an ascension to a higher state of consciousness. This game is beautiful and powerful.

To anyone playing this game (Idk if she figured it out, I'm halfway through the video):
If you hold down the dash button on Agro she will permanently run at top speed.
Also, do not forget that you can target colossi. The button is different depending on your control scheme. I see so many people struggle with certain colossi because they simply forget that you can target them.

3:58:50 I in fact probably played this when I was exactly 8, maybe 7, I can't remember. But anyways, I will say it is the very first game I ever became overly fixated with and played all over again the moment I finished it. It is like THE game that got me into video games and from how I am glazing it you can tell how hard I fell in love with it. The fact that I still come back to it and follow gameplay of it about 18 years later shows how close this is to my heart. S.o.t.C. is forever goated.

I've always thought Dormin was/were neither wholly evil or good, just misunderstood and sealed away by the people out of fear. The colossi each hold a fragment of Dormin, and as you said they are typically only violent when provoked. When Wander slays them both a shadow and a dove appear at the shrine, darkness and light.

Team Ico only ever made 3 games. Ico, Colossus and The Last Guardian, although technically it was GenDesign that finished The Last Guardian during a troubled and convoluted development period. It was originally supposed to be a PS3 game but ended up being a PS4 title and was released 8 years after development initially began. Team Ico no longer exists, staff either left or were moved to other PlayStation studios.

I grew up poor, i remember everyone around me in mexico had a ps2 and i wouldn't shut up about it when talking to one of my uncles so much so that he somehow managed to get me one and a copy of this game. I didnt speak or read english at the time so i wasn't sure what to do in the game. I saw monsters on the disc box and on the manual but didnt know how to get to em or "unlock" them. After 2 years of riding agro around doing tricks, eating lizard tails and fruit, and trying to kill the white doves around mono family from the US visited us. My cousin's bf at the time was a bully and when he found out i had a ps2 he hogged it and started playing. He then got to the 1st colossus and i was amazed... after everyone went home i started playing this game, not imagining what id get myself into. I got stuck on the 8th colossus for the longest time. We moved to the US and because of financial issues i couldn't pack my ps2 with me so it stayed in mexico :(. Skip a couple more years and i finally went back in 2010 but didn't have a way to play cuz we couldn't afford a TV. Took me until about 2012 to finish the game (LONGEST GAMEPLAY EXPERIENCE EVER lol) its been burned into my mind and def has a special place in my heart. I remember hearing about the last guardian shortly after i finished the game. So cool, i was trying to find ICO tho to get the full experience and i did. But with my luck, we moved around some more, endured more hardships. I eventually joined the army came back home. And with my own money i bought myself another ps2 and a copy of ICO. I JUST FINISHED IT ABOUT A WEEK AGO. it was sooooo good, i love Fumito Ueda such a genius, every one of his games has made me cry lmao

The protagonist's name is Wander, which means "Wanderer." Wander being reborn as a baby is because the Colossus were also reincarnated from the stone idols, So by eliminating all the Colossus, Wander absorbed all the other Colossus and became another Colossi himself, which is Dormin. That's why he was reincarnated as a baby. The 16 Colossus were guardians who guarded Dormin, He made Wander eliminate all the guardians guarding him so that he could regain his strength. As the game progresses, you can see Wander's skin getting paler with each Colossi Wander defeat, This is Dormin slowly taking over his body. And that's not all, the baby that appears in the fountain is not only the reincarnation of Wander, but also Dormin (hence the horns). Dormin just used Wander to free himself, and kill the innocent guardians who owned those lands.

This was the game that everybody, even after clocking still felt like there was some deep hidden secret in the game, like a secret area or boss hiding somewhere. It made some dedicated players literally turn the game inside out and find all these unused assets, environments etc..... soooooooooooooooo ahead of it's time, released on ps2 and Xbox!!
