Hi paul .nice vid .I left st helena in 1992 i now live in new York city ,usa .i heard you mentioned my brother George Benjamin's name .i have my mother ,gladys and some more brothers and sisters living out there.i hope to visit when the airport is open..i liked your vid thanks alot gavin....
Gavin, Thanks. Not meant to be a professional piece but it seems to be liked. Yes a good time we had with Georgie and Lisa throughout the Holiday, met Ingrid and Alan on New Years Day.
Ramsey. Thank You: Meant for Family & Friends to view as an update to my previous videos of 2 years ago, but others seem to be enjoying it on here and on Facebook - much to my surprise
Hi Paul. Can I please congratulate you on a fantastic video. I really hope to visit St Helena soon. Sadly it won't be on the RMS by the time I can manage it. Always been fascinated by this little piece of blighty paradise in the South Atlantic. Thank you
I wish I had a little bit of money to invest in the island before the big companies and greedy ones come in and ruin everything. Eco-tourism wise it looks like a great place for zip lines . And I'm sure it would be great for cable cars .
I wish I can go there someday before I die, and also Fernando de Noronha, looks so peaceful and safe to be there. I live in Chicago where about 40 people are shot every week end.
I actually live in the suburbs about 35 miles away from the central city( Bloomingdale ), if I mention its name you would not know where its at, that's why I say Chicago, its pretty safe where I live.
11:20.. how refreshing is that.. a radio station with a breeze blowing in through the curtains instead of a claustrophobic hermetically sealed looking room. Btw I did not realize that was you until the end of the broadcast ,haha.... you certainly seem to be enjoying yourself .
Yes adds to the atmosphere and quirky nature of the Community Station. Its great to hear the Minor Birds chatting outside during broadcasts in the Summer months - Makes you feel like you are there
@@PaulBlake80 sorry Paul that I am only just seeing this comment of yours just now as I am very busy... but it was wonderful coming back here again and reminding me of this wonderful destination that I will hopefully get to visit
My prediction is that the RMS will sail for many more months yet??!! Liked hearing the 'unofficial' National Anthem of St Helena at the end. Thanks for a great video. St Helena is on my Bucket List
Colin. Thanks. Yes the RMS is now on a rolling 12 month schedule until such times as the a stable air service is in place. There should be an Interim Service in place around June July or Maybe August This year but I am assuming a stable Air Service is when runway 20 is opened up to larger commercial aircraft not the interim service so yes the RMS will still be sailing for some time yet. Get there soon, you could combine the two modes, Go there by Sea on the RMS either from Ascension 3 nights or Cape Town (5 Days) and fly out or visa versa of course. Yes the unofficial anthem the original by Dave Mitchell is normally played over the PA on the RMS when leaving Port. On this occasion they did not for some reason. The version on my Video is by Saint Helenian Billy Ray Cranfield from his CD named My St Helena Isle - I like it better than the original.
It takes 8 hours to fly from London to New York, It takes a week by ship from Southampton to new York by Cunard. There are still people who enjoy the comforts of travel froma bygone era. Hopefully the RMS St Helena will be sailing for many more years yet, air service or no air service??!!
Colin Ely His vid calledJanuary February 2018 shows the last trip of the RMS to Saint Helena and also the ceremony for it... and I know nothing about the place but it made me very sad as much as the people who live there.. you might want to watch it.. I felt choked up for real.... and then at the very end of that part he mentions that the ship actually came back briefly because someone was sick on it
Hello Paul: My compliments on a very lovely video! Being an 'Island Lady' most of my life ...'you had me from the beginning with Mark Knopfler's music plus the visual'! I absolutely adored the 'FEEL' of St. Helena Island, if that makes sense, and I would so very much love to visit it. Being on the West Coast of Canada (Vancouver Island, British Columbia), I wonder if one must travel from Africa or is there a way from S. America? Just another thought, but if Flax was traditionally grown there (I noted that from another video), would it not be possible to have a wee bit more agriculture (i.e) South Sea yams, or other greenhouse veggies? Perhaps more of the younger descendants would be able to become more land sustainable? Many global millennial aged people are realizing how overwhelming large contemporary cities are becoming, and realizing how peaceful a place like St. Helena might be, so possibly want to stay on, or return - just a thought :) You've done a wonderful job with this video, I truly enjoyed it - thank you
Hi Ursula. Many thanks for your kind comments, what was a video to share with Family & Friends has become something of a 'hit'. Not Sure why. Regarding the Flax - New Zealand Flax was Introduced in the early 1850;s and was the biggest industry on the Island until the late 1950's; You can read more about it here: sainthelenaisland.info/flax.htm Its got a bit out of control but is being reined back now. Regarding a visit. The only mass entry method now is via a weekly flight from Johannesburg and another weekly flight in the Summer months (Late Nov - Feb) from Cape Town. You have to get there 1st. The MV Helena offers a 4 berth cabin on a six day voyage from Cape Town. The other option is a Yacht of course a Private Jet :-) There is some agriculture on island, mainly Vegetable's and some fruit - the main export is St Helena Coffee - If you pop down to Starbucks in Seattle you can sample it there - Very Expensive - rated as one of the best and Rarest Coffee's in the World. The fishing industry is going thorough turmoil at present, hopefully that will be resolved soon.
Are there any DOGS or CATS on St. Helena? Out of all of the videos that I have seen of this island, not one has contained any dogs or cats! I have a dream of going to this beautiful island some day. I do not know if it will ever come to fruition, but it is something nice to hold on to. I often wonder what a day in the life for a long time resident of St. Helena must be like - what sorts of things people do as they go about their daily lives. It would be interesting and informative to see and know what ordinary and average folks get up to in a place so far off the beaten path and the hustle, hassles and worries of daily life in a big city for instance. It was a lovely video. Thank you for sharing your experiences with all of your viewers! Cheers!
Hi Jock. Thanks for your feedback. Very interesting point about the Dogs & Cats. Yes I can say that there is a very healthy population of both on island. Green Renaissance have produced a great series of Shorts Films on Saints and what they do in their daily lives: th-cam.com/users/results?search_query=green+renaissance+st+helena+island
Hi Maryke Since Opening on the weekly flight in winter and twice weekly one in the summer months the car park is full including the overflow and if you arrive late you have to park on rough ground adjacent to the car park
Albertus. It is open now but not to Commercial Jets. Should be open to an interim service using runway 02 June-August depending on how long the Contract award and implementation will take. St Helena Government are reviewing Tenders from a number "Airlines" for this interim service at present with a decision due at the end of May
HI Dan. Not really, Since Opening on the weekly flight in winter and twice weekly one in the summer months the car park is full including the overflow and if you arrive late you have to park on rough ground adjacent to the car park
Hi Philip - I personally do not know any Watson's on Island, but if you join the St Helena Genealogy Facebook Group they might be able to help in your search. It has been having success tracking family members - they have been using DNA samples to help. facebook.com/groups/241710053242745/
@Terry Frederickson @ChanceKing21 It's actually a Mark Knopfler tune from a film he did the score for called Local Hero, the song is called Wild Theme.
Tania: The currency is the St Helena Pound which has parity with the British Pound (Sterling) which can be used on Island as well. The Population fluctuates around the 4500 mark

Many Thanks, Hopefully you will be able to get there by Air this year maybe. Get there before tourism really takes off
I wish I had a little bit of money to invest in the island before the big companies and greedy ones come in and ruin everything.
Eco-tourism wise it looks like a great place for zip lines .
And I'm sure it would be great for cable cars .
I know they don't really grow their own fruit but I have a feeling with their climate they might be able to grow olive trees fairly successfully
Paul, tu video ya es una pieza histórica. Me gustó mucho. Felicitaciones.
Gustavo. Mamy gracias por tu commnet - muy apreciada
Thanks for showing us where Napoleon lived and died!
I wish I can go there someday before I die, and also Fernando de Noronha, looks so peaceful and safe to be there. I live in Chicago where about 40 people are shot every week end.

hmm, looks like parking at the airport isn't an issue
Hi Maryke Since Opening on the weekly flight in winter and twice weekly one in the summer months the car park is full including the overflow and if you arrive late you have to park on rough ground adjacent to the car park
This reminds me of the movie langoliers
Do you know where someone can find out what real estate is available on St. Helena? Cheers!!!
Try Here: www.propertyfinder.sh/
When will the airport be opened ???????????

It seems like they're a bit optimistic about how busy the airport is going to get judging from the number of parking spaces.
HI Dan. Not really, Since Opening on the weekly flight in winter and twice weekly one in the summer months the car park is full including the overflow and if you arrive late you have to park on rough ground adjacent to the car park
