I'm completely serious when I say this: what you are doing by preserving and uploading these old episodes is so important. More and more these artists (true artists!) are lost and forgotten, and anything that keeps them relevant for a new generation, however few people may appreciate it, is so vital. THANK YOU for you work on this!

The Bobby Darin segment brought tears to my eyes. I knew he was a great singer but I was blown away by how accomplished he was on the piano and harmonica. This was filmed mere months before he passed away. 😢

As a teenager in the 70's I didn't give much thought to 50's/early 60's artists. Well, wow, Bobby Darin (RIP) was just fabulous on this episode, and Paul Anka was a great host. I did love "Jubilation" when it came out. That's the thing about the Midnight Special. Whether I was watching in 1973 or (thankfully) now, there was such diversity in each episode, always something for everyone. Thanks to everybody working to post all of these episodes and clips, and especially to Burt Sugarman for having the foresight to protect the treasures.

Another nice blast from the past moments with all artists on this video. Glad we got to see Bobby Darin immortalized here shortly before he died. He didn’t show any signs of serious illness. I once sent Paul Anka a poem I wrote when I was 14 years old as a business English project a couple years later to see what his reaction would be. It wasn’t a romantic poem. It was more of a current events type poem of a more serious nature during the turbulent late 60’s era. Well his secretary sent it back to me and thanked me for sending the poem and to continue my endeavors in poetry. Well many years later I sent in that same poem to a contest in the 1990’s and it is now in the National Library of poetry in Washington to my surprise. I was also offered a job later on from RCA records (the label Paul Anka used to record his music at the time) after graduating from High school but I would have to take 3 buses to the studio at the time. I still wonder to this day if he had anything to do with RCA contacting me during that time. Anyway thanks for making these videos available. ❤️🙏🏻🎼🌹

I am blown away again and awestruck how music crosses time and generations: In 1973 my Dads favorite artist was Bobby Darin ( he would name my brother to be born in 74 after his last name with same spelling); today, in 2023, my 27 year old son’s favorite singer is George Jones. What a gift these shows are to the memory bank. And to have Loretta and Tammy on back to back shows! Giants walked the earth back then.

Oh man. Bobby Darin six months before his unexpected death. He sounded lovely but I know his health was absolutely terrible at the time. He looks a heckuva lot older than 37. It's nice that Paul Anka hosted this broadcast; he was great friend of Darin's and ended up being the person to posthumously induct Darin in the rock and roll hall of fame in 1990 (it seems crazy it took 30 more years for the Doobie Brothers to make it in).

Thank you for another phenomenal full-length episode of "The Midnight Special." I loved the black & white concert clip that Paul Anka shared. The girls were screaming and swooning over Paul, and there was a cop standing there who was just as mesmerized as the girls. My favorite Paul Anka is "The Times of Your Life" which became a jingle for Kodak camera commercial. I think we can all remember back when we had film cameras, flash cubes, and the birth of Polaroids, films projectors with film reels, slide projectors with slides, 8 tracks and cassettes, rotary phones, party lines, pagers, and payphones. Now, we live in a digital world, streaming, computers and cell phones. I would go back to those simple care free days as a young girl sitting in my parent's living room watching TV with an antenna. There was no cable.
Happy Friday... thank you for sharing! 💖

@@themidnightspecialtvshow - As you might have seen from my comments, I am the #1 fan of the show. I hesitate to ask this favor, but there is a performance I have been dying to see again. It is "Midnight Show" by Ron Dante on June 13th, 1975 show. Many special things surrounding this song. It was a pseudo dedication to your program, it was one of the few times an artist only performed one song on an episode, it was a giant hit in my area of the country, and Ron and myself may not make it long enough to see it when it appears in a couple of years. Thanks for your consideration.

Im 51 so this is just a little before my time watching live, but I remember seeing reruns. Music was so real back then. Had a genuine quality about it. Everyone could play an instrument or actually sing or at least had amazing charisma. These traits are missing from today's modern, lets call it Pop music or top 40

You can feel the pain in Tammy Wynette's voice, the pain she lived in her life.

Judging by the year I feel like The Doobie Brothers might be in the first Southern Rock groups. Incredible performance!

The Doobie Bros were from San Jose, CA. Not a Southern Rock band.

It appears they thought "Natural Thing" was going to be the leadoff single from the new Doobies album. But the label decided "Long Train Runnin" was the better choice, with "China Grove" to follow. I think the label made the right choice, although "Natural Thing" is still quite good.

    • @Fredman2410

I still don't think they were convinced - I remember that the 45 single as used in jukeboxes had Long Train on one side and China Grove on the other (I can't remember which was the A side).

@@Fredman2410 - Those two titles have never been released on the same 45 in America (promotional or commercial). But there was a 33 1/3 rpm jukebox album released in 1973 that contained 5 songs from "The Captain & Me" album. Those two titles were on side A and "Natural Thing" was on side B.

@shyman99 This was in Canada, and definitely a 45. I knew the bar owners, and watched them change the disk a couple of times. I should have kept one!

It would seem thee are not entire and complete shows. This episode cut the George Jones & Tammy Wynette duet of “Let’s All Go Down To The River” unless I somehow missed it.
