    I have a Catahoula Leopard and he's been the best dog I've ever had. I've had pits and hounds, I'm used to smart dogs.
    Fred is incredibly intelligent, alert, and loves working, but he's also perfectly happy to sleep all day snuggling on the couch. He's very smart, friendly, affectionate, sweet, and active, but if it's rainy or cold outside, he just wants to cuddle on the couch and watch movies all day.

      💯 % This is what Keanu does. I give him time and run 30 minutes 4 times a week. Then social skills, walking on a heel, no jumping. One 🚪 for play one door to do the report. " #1 & 2" he ❤️ to be wrapped in blankets. On his MF bed! Very 😊

    We adopted a 9/10 year old male. Took him 6 months to finally let his guard down and accept us as his new family. He's become very affectionate, loyal, and protective around strangers and pets that approach. It's been such an honor and a relief to see him open up and accept us this way. I was running with him a mile or more every day but have had to take it easier and walk/jog instead with his sore legs. If he runs flat out he'll have a limp for a day or two.

    We adore our Catahoula pup (6months). We live in an urban environment and she gets lots of excercise and training work. She is extremely social with both people and dogs, unbelievably bright and adaptive, goofy and playful as well. No doubt about the amount of work it takes, but I have never had a smarter dog.

    I was captivated by my dogs beauty and shyness at the shelter but damn, she’s a tough dog. She had and still has severe separation anxiety. She barks and talks all the time. Needs mental simulation and be outside and not alone all the time. She’s SO SMART. I mean like a 10 year old. She even knows the difference in meaning by the sentence construction, it’s insane. Her personality is strong as can be, more complex than many humans. She’s soooo picky and will go on food protests for days if I give her kibble. She one time threw a treat the vet gave her and barked at her. She’s incredibly strong and listens to me, but absolutely no one else. She’s a one master kind of dog. Love her though!!!

    I lived in TX for 1 year about 13 yrs ago. This is where I met my first Catahoula at one of those 10 acre dog parks. Great dog, partied hard a bunch of times with my female red nose pitt. Dog was male and about the same age so it was a great workout for both

      they are great, in the Fort Worth area. Now I am back in NYC and they are terrible. Only way to do it the right way here is get up at 5am. Parks in general hae off leash hours 9pm-9am

    • @Demion83
      @Demion83 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Bushanie24 I live in Australia, our dog parks are maybe 1 acre, usually less. I go to great lengths to find tracts of wilderness where TECHNICALLY you're not supposed to have your dog off leash, but you know no one is there or the few people who might show up are all doing the same thing and it's just an unspoken and unwritten understanding. My favourite place is about 370 acres of "preserve" on the bend of a river, but have a few more ranging from maybe 10 acres to a couple hundred. I don't bother with dog parks at all, their smallness is tantamount to a slap in my dogs faces.

    • @Bushanie24
      @Bushanie24 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Demion83 yes a slap in the face and also doggy mental hospitals. The dummies in NYC will have theor dogs copped up all day. The they get home and go straight to the park and it's an absolute explosion of a shit show. If you're gonna do that at least take your dog for a nice structured walk for 30-60 mins. This way your dog is chilled out a lil bit

      @@Bushanie24 I have a house yard the size of most dog parks, so the only reason to go to a dog park would be to have people watch me pick up dog turds in a bag or maybe get my dog into a fight. Not keen on either.

    They are very smart when given the proper direction, but can be prone to excessivly barking when bored. Fun Fact: The dog from the novel Sounder by William H Armstrong was a Catahoula bulldog. Basically the catchdog version of the Leopard dog which is more of a bay dog. Would love to see a video comparing the two varients.

    My Catahoulas are broken. They just love sleeping, snacking, and basically watching movies or going out to swim. Very chill; but definitely not normal gor their breed. All the ones I've owned before were very active, social, and played hard with our Belgian Malinois.

  • @nickelsndimes

    I have 2 nalc catahoulas we live in an urban environment and they do excellent.. I've owned many dog breeds in my life from German shepherds, Golden retrievers, end even a Rhodesian Ridgeback, catahoulas are by far the best family dog/bestfriend. If your thinking about getting one of course you should consider this dog needs to work (just like almost all dog breeds) but any good dog owner knows there dog needs alot of attention, excersize and discipline. Definitely recommend this breed to good dog owners! Wouldn't recommend any big dog to apartment owners but if you have a sizeable yard, like going on long walks with your pup and love for dogs the catahoula is an amazing match.

Super sweet, loves to cuddle, but wow… she needs to run, she needs more space than I have and more energy than I can muster. Very protective of our border but friendly if I allow you in front door. I love her but I have constant guilt that she needs to be in a different environment than mine.

    Bonjour ! Old Louisiana Cajun here with over 5 decades of experience with Catahoulas . They are fearless , can run all day , have webbed feet , Are dead silent trailing and loud only on a definative strike . ( No false treeing ). loyal , sometimes stubborn . There is truth to their having wolf blood in them as They have certain behaviorial traits I have seen that are very wolf like . Stay away from CKC ,AKC , ADBA registered dogs as they aren't performance bred . NALC is the original registry for performance Catahoulas ! They are named after lake Catahoula which translates to clear water referring to the glass eyes many have .

      They are becoming a common cross in Vic, usually with a Kelpie or Red Heeler. Like the Lurcher (Irish Wolfhound x Greyhound) this cross is close to becoming a breed in itself. Most excellent stock dogs that have all the go you need and then some. No good as pets. They will find 'work' for themselves when underutilised and can be a desteuctive menace.
