Ethan Hunt really? It does take a lot if practice, but it’s not very practical in the real world... it’s very angle sensitive, so my go to TNR is now counterfeit, by Wayne Houchin, a lot more practical and wayyyy easier to perform!

@@shawnyu3666 nothing beats the last restoring piece of reformation, garcia or wayne houchin's counterfeit, in fact the restoration of the last piece of both of those trick were not as impresive as the 2nd and third piece.

Guy makes this classic effect look like a true miracle. My fellow magi in the know will attest to the difficulty of performing this masterpiece of magic. Without question, Reformation is the most difficult of all the torn and restored card tricks, but also without question, is that this version is the most perfect in creating the illusion of a real miracle of magic. Guy is a modern master magician and worthy of deep study by all students of magic.

Since then, there have been countless of Piece by Piece TnR created .. but still, none came close to the beauty of this.

This is still by far the best torn and restored - the choreography is superb. You see the card torn a piece at a time, then display the pieces individually and restore the card one piece at a time. Daniel Garcia's TORN is brilliant and a bit easier - but this done well is still the best. Forget "Counterfeit" by Wayne Houchin (he had to drop the name 'Counterfeit Hollingsworth' after a cease and desist). If you want to learn this it will take months, literally - but it is worth it

This is a superbly clever and world class torn and restored routine. Guy teaches in The Drawing Room Deceptions but it is very very hard. I practiced for about 3 months and never dared to show it. Very fiddly and angly. I've seen two people do this well: Guy himself and a German guy on youtube call Dennis Spurr. The difficulty (way beyond most people) is what I love about this routine and the ability to show the last quarter clearly in your hands. I now perform Torn but would love to do this.

@vsha2 I believe that (re: the strong reactions)! I used that effect for bars, kids shows at the local Borders, & everything in between (different patter of course!). It's definitely angle-y, but when you can control the angles, not too much can best it.
I have to admit I never saw him perform anything else, but I've no doubt he put on a fantastic show. I hope he adds as much to the world of the law as he did to the magic world :)

So back in the late 90's, Guy H. did this on Worlds Greatest Magic, I was blown away, so obviously I wanted to learn it, bad news, Guy H. did not release any instruction. Fast forward about 5 years later, I came across 2 instruction versions of the torn and restore card, one by John Lovick and JC Wagner. I learned both, I would say JL is easier to learn than JC, but I would almost 99% compare JC's version handling is similar to Guy H.... Now if only I could learn DC's torn and restore baseball card.

You know what the problem with video is? It makes a bunch of know-it-all, wannabe rain-man one-offs think they’d know how it was done if they saw it live-or broadcast like it was on “World’s Greatest Magic.” Instead, you sit on your phone scrubbing the timeline ten-thousand times, until you finally catch an imperfection-and then act like you’re just sitting around waiting for MENSA to give you back pay.
Just. Shut. Up. You know less than those that watch this with awe-both in terms of construction as well as presentation.

I used to perform The Reformation (though not nearly as elegantly as Guy), & there really is no tape, glue, etc. It's all sleight of hand. Brilliantly constructed sleight of hand I might add.
I had to laugh at vsha2's comment: as charming as Guy is, his patter really hasn't changed more than perhaps a few words over the last decade, or since he was on WGM. I suppose I can't really hold it against him though considering he technically is a lawyer & not a professional performer!

@normalityrelief Lols! Well, he may not be a full time pro, but he is FAR BETTER than 95% of full time pro's. His public show "expert at the card table" got the most amazing reviews. I'm so disappointed I may never get to watch the show again. So, so, so disappointed. I have 2 laywomen friends who went and watched the show. They usually don't like magic. They LOVED the show.
By the by, I also used to perform Reformation. I kid you not, I have rarely gotten such strong reactions.

Troll Account oddly he didn’t perform that part like explained in his book. The right hand twists uncomfortably palm towards the audience and grips the right edge. As it turns the card over, it also rotates to the right and the left thumb folds the flap back.
He didn’t do any of that. It’s almost as if he forgot and improved that moment.

I thinks Wayne houchin's counterfeit have surpassed guy's reformation, as counterfeit is a lot easier to perform, and is a lot cleaner as you are not using extra pieces. HIGHLY RECOMMEND(I bought counterfeit from theory 11)

The radio host (if you watch the other videos as well) is a little bit of a knob.
But seriously, Guy's patter has hardly changed over the last 10 years for this trick. It was perfect for WGM, but not for this situation.
The little joke about tearing things up... appropriate for the light hearted attitude of WGM, but not here. I don't know exactly why, but it wasn't appropriate. Not funny, and came across as a little lame.
BTW, the host is at a v tight angle.
    What a legend.
