This video is 100% facts, P06 (unintentionally) gaslit people so hard into thinking Sonic 06 is good, glad you're putting them in their place, lol But fr, on your point about level design, there are some levels I would argue are bad like White Acropolis and Flame Core, which are too open ended for adventure level design but may work better in something like Frontiers' engine. There is absolutely nothing fun about occasionally being thrown into an arena of enemies and mashing the jump button at something in this game to watch the health bar go down - there's no spectacle, no strategy, etc. Kingdom Valley and Crisis City do work a lot better with a better (not broken) engine like p06. So it's about 50/50 for me with 06's level design, but the way they function in the game they were designed for is what matters.
For its jankiness, I always found Wave Ocean and Kingdom Valley to be well designed levels. Though they play much better on a good game like Generations.

I totally agree with what you said in this video. P-06 is not an "enhancement modification" or "Better 06". It is a completely different game in every aspect. I was a guy who played P-06 first, and I was like, "What a fantastic game! I haven't played vanilla 06 yet, but is it actually that bad?" 24:32 Ok, so to add a little bit. I'm studying level design and I recently see the MDA Framework witch stands for Mechanics, Dynamics and Aesthetics. The Mechanics is basically the rules that are programed in the games and well... this game is programed like ass xdxdxd. The thing is, The Mechanics are the base of all the game and from them you get the Dynamics and then the Aesthetics. Without well implemented Mechanics all fals apart (no surprise) so yeah... in context of 06 there is no good level design if there are no good Mechanics. Too much text
Right so i agree with the loop thing partly. No automation at all makes it incredibly difficult to stay on track whilst maintaining your speed and not getting lost in where you are in the loop. Its why a lot of 3d fangames (and indie stuff like rollin rascal) have found their own solution in making the loop really fucking wide and having guard rails at the side, and for the most part this works, but you are right in that it loses out on most of the spectacle that even since Sonic 1, was part of the appeal. i think you solve that by meeting in the middle. Half automate but only to get rid of issues that come with 3d. Like in 2d, the challenge a loop presents is having enough speed going into it to make it up to the ceiling and be rewarded with more speed coming down and out. So just automate the loop like we have now, have the camera move out for the crazy angles and all that shit, but only take away horizontal movement. You can only run straight through the loop on the automated path BUT youre forced to have enough speed going in, otherwise youll fall out of automation and have to jump through or try again like a loser. Id also probably make it so you can jump at any point in the loop to exit automation manually if for whatever reason you wanna turn back. And you'd need to have decently low speed to even trigger the automation on certain bigger loops. Dunno if its a perfect solution but its the best i can come up with.
I thought the same like you did in regards to loops. Like set a spline for the path of the loop (so you can't go outside it while running through) and then just let physics handle everything otherwise. I would also add a 2D camera focusing on the loop as you move Sonic through it, so it's closer to the Genesis games.
Most people are gassing up the fan made P-06 which makes the gameplay actually solid. The problem is its given a lot of outsiders the idea of "oh, so Sonic 06 is good actually!" despite p-06 being an entirely different game mechanically. As someone who played the original, no, it is not a good game, it is a game with decent ideas and levels but is broken in execution. and the mach sections, those are just impossible to defend. The one on Kingdom Valley made me want to get hit by a train
Hard disagree on automated loops, imo. Seeing that one playthrough of Utopia where the player switches back onto the loop after going through it once just for style points was so so cool. Visually sure, could be more impressive, but for a counterpoint the loop in SEGA All-Stars racing is enlarged enough to reduce camera-in-ass while showing the world spinning upside down, which is all I really want. Pulling the camera out to a 2D side perspective takes all the fun and roller-coasteryness out of the idea of doing loops in 3D at all.
funny thing about the automated loop thing is that there IS actually a loop (or two?) that is not automated in frontiers cyberspace update 3.. and its pretty neat. A little wonky but you can sway left and right in it. But yeah I agree with the automation thing overall, you need it in moderation to make sure you don't fly off the stage at certain cinematic parts
9:54 The only game that I know of where non-automated loops are a good thing is sonic battle R, but that whole game is built around using spin dash in a 3D environment with 2D physics and gaining momentum off of slopes
The game being all broken and buggy is kinda fun to me like discovering a new bug is fun and randomly flying into space with blaze it’s pretty fucking fun Sonic 06 is goated..
This comment is ultimately about loops in speed games. I'm way more passionate about this than I realized lol. I agree that automation exists for a reason: both spectacle and smoothing gameplay in the player's favor. But of course, there's a major difference between coyote time (a few frames of grace where you can still jump after running off a platform) and the game simply making a jump for you. After playing Spark the Electric Jester and Sonic GT, I think manual loops mostly come down to game feel. In 3D Sonic games, loops start to feel like I'm watching Sonic make the loop instead of actually playing the game. If you're going to interrupt my flow then at least make it more interesting than a cutscene of Sonic running in circles in the Y-axis. Shadow Gens did this really well! Also, when you don't include momentum, loops are nothing more than time loss. A character that can handle loops is a character who can play more dynamic levels! And Sonic games have always encouraged replay so there really should be room for experts to do things that casuals won't. And as you pointed out, loops can even contain obstacles like in the Rooftop Trip custom level. It wasn't complex or anything, but neither is rail grinding. It adds identity! That loop sticks out in my mind as a cool set piece that I remember running through. For most other loops I only remember them when I find a way to skip them.
Lots of people are saying they never struggled with silver but idk man… a huge amount of them also played the game when they were younger which makes me heavily doubt they accurately remember their first experience with the boss…

TLDR: I believe if you look at the level design alone from your perspective and from your knowledge of 3D Sonic then yes this is good, but when you're playing the bad game and experiencing level design which does not accomodate the character... You can say this is bad level design as it does not accomodate the character's control... However I'm not saying its bad in general just in the context of base 06 Considering Sonics moveset before 06 and Sonic's moveset in 06 i believe its clear that 06's levels were designed for a more polished 06 moveset which didn't make it in, in time and since all the levels feel simarly designed in vibe and structure it seems quite intentional so I'd say that the level design is great for what the team was striving for but the lack of polished momentum physics and moveset can leave potentially good level design feeling poor because a poorly designed Sonic (or a Mario) is trying to scale level design, designed for a faster and more fluid character... So no in the case of Sonic 06 base the level design is poor because it cannot accommodate the character... But to the fans or rather, relative to a good adventure styled Sonic it's good so i believe if you look at it from your perspective and your idea of Sonic like prolly how the devs of p-06 did you'll say "good Sonic level design" but looking at the level design relative to the actual playable character... it's no use.
Sonic fans when the game very obviously shows that homing attacking the boss wildly doesn't work (the fight is clearly bullshit and poorly designed)
Note: yes I know the fight is broken. But if I could beat it as a 6 year old, you people have no excuse
@@Magekhight I mean you have an excuse, because the fight is not all that well designed.
A message saying something like "attacking head on won't work, try when he lets his guard down" or something along the lines would make the fight a little more intuitive.
@@MagekhightI beat a lot of bullshit as a kid because I didn’t own a lot of games so I would be more willing to slam my head into a wall to get results.
That… that doesn’t mean as much as you think it does…
I don’t care HOW GOOD project 06 is… I grew up with the retail version of this game. Got it for my ps3 in 2009. This game will always be trash.
