    I didn't say the word "pungent" right. I did realize that after I filmed, edited and uploaded to youtube, lol

    Thank you! I love this! The colors on each experiment turned out so lovely! And I really love the fact that no harsh chemicals were used.

      Yeah cuz if there was toxic chemicals then it would be too dangerous for me to do! Thanks for this super helpful vid!

    Hi Sharon
    If you pour some vinegar into a glass jar and add the steel wool and leave it until it dissolves, you will get a much darker result. I am in love with the rusty result you achieved by laying the steel wool on top. Yay new experiments to try. I am such a huge fan of all your Gnome Home series, and so appreciative of the fact that you documented and share these amazing results and projects. May your imagination stay forever young! Bless you and Thank You!

      that's awesome, thanks Angie! I appreciate the extra info. I only ever tried it on my crafting table and then for those coffee sticks.. I'll def try leaving the vinegar and wool together longer next time to see the results :)

      Most videos about this method say to leave overnight or 24hrs. I haven't seen one yet that says wait till it dissolves or seen one yet that did totally dissolve it stained it.

    What percentage of vinegar?
    The grocery store carries different acid percentage even in white....

    Gah, I can't find fine steel wool that doesn't have "added soap" >.< I am going to try it with the thick steel scourers!

    I know this is an old post, but try adding some hydrogen peroxide to the vinegar. If you like the rust color. The peroxide speeds the rusting process. I sometimes age things by painting with iron paint ans then rusting it.

    that was an awsome video👍 I need to age a few tiny crates for a diorama and this should work. i need much smaller amounts of stain so hopefully it won't stink up the place🤣

    One suggestion, buy your coffee sticks,from Amazon $7.00-ish for 1000! The small packages are much more expensive. That said...great presentation.

    I never knew how vinegar would actually "stain" wood .... Because of the colors you were able to attain by just placing the vinegar - soaked steel wool on top of the sticks, that has to be my favorite.method you used. TY for sharing your techniques and knowledge with us.

    Very good information. I used the skinny stir sticks in the last dollhouse I made. The size is perfect, but finding them was a challenge. I ended up recruiting a couple of friends who went to Starbucks daily to pick up a few extra sticks when they got coffee and I did the same. Fortunately it wasn’t a very big dollhouse. Now I’m looking for ways to age the wood for a barn.

    Nice tutorial on how to age wood for dioramas. I'm definitely going to try this. I'm planning on doing the method of leaving the stir sticks under the steel wool and vinegar over night.

    Instead of brushing the vinegar on or putting a bunch of sticks in it you can make the whole thing and put it in if u wanna make the process go quicker

    • @WhereTheGnomesLive
      @WhereTheGnomesLive  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wonder if the vinegar would eat away at the glue? Not sure but it's something to consider. It also would depend on what you make as well, how large the thing is would determine how much vinegar solution you need. It's probably easier to just brush it on for larger pieces.

    Wow they turned out great! I love all the different colors. I'm wondering would this work without the steel wool or do you need that? Also, where did you find that type of very fine steel wool from? Thanks! :D

      Any hardware store will have fine steel wool. Look in the paint department.

    • @WhereTheGnomesLive
      @WhereTheGnomesLive  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't tried it without steel wool. I think it's the steel wool that causes the reaction mixed with vinegar. And yes, any hardware store carries the steel wool.. I just looked online and walmart has some too (here in Canada)

    Hi Sharon, this is really interesting & useful, thanks for sharing. When you suggested that us sensitive types should prob use gloves, I got to wondering about the icky smell you mentioned too & wondered 'Could that also be an irritant?' So I found this education forum where they're talking about the science of adding vinegar to steel wool, (it's a little dry, but interesting if you're a nerd like me) assist.asta.edu.au/print/3684 if you're interested. Apparently that icky smell is chemically icky too (but I'd think only in tiny amounts) - so good ventilation would be a good idea for us sensitive types, too.
    Hope you're keeping well :)

    • @WhereTheGnomesLive
      @WhereTheGnomesLive  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      wow, that's really interesting.. it is a rather low amount, below anything that could cause harm, but yes, my windows were open and I think the next time I did a large piece , like my table, I would do it outside. Thanks for the link, it's good to know!

      Thank you so much! I love the rust one too. I've been so busy the last few days I haven't gotten the chance to say thanks for the friendship! I really appreciated that. I'm a big fan of yours and those wonderful mice. Your houses, stories and books are quite magical. I was so happy to see you on facebook and look forward to going through your photos. I've been working non-stop behind the scenes the last few days getting some trees made. I have to go on holidays soon so I'm trying to get them done before I leave. Anyway, one of these coffee breaks I'll head over and browse :) See you soon!
