    Ricky and I went on it 3 years ago. Halfway to Antinito, you stop in Osler for an all you can eat lunch whbich is included min the ticket price......The food was like home cooking...was amazing how fast they got everyone fed. Plenty of selections and lots of it. There is a concessison car ....don't remember if they sold beer. BUT the scenery was just breath taking....well worth the price.

    I went on that train ride years ago. It went a couple of hours to a station in the middle of nowhere, we had lunch, then it came back. It was kind of fun.

    Take a ride Rusty. The old west is at your steps. We rode the Durango-Silverton in Colorado. We booked the last car which is for adults and has beer, whiskey, etc. The last car allows viewing from the back outside. There are restrooms on the train. The train there in Chama is on our bucket list. The best time may be in September when the trees turn color.

    The Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad is well known among Rail Fans, It travels through some very beautiful and scenic countryside in Colorado.

    Nice place!!!!! That is what you could take us on. A long train ride. Be nice. Meet and see a lot of nice people. And more BEAUTIFUL places. Then give a over veiw of your trip. A guy here does this. Greenergrass..from Greensboro NC. He has a lot of subs and watches. Now you will not have yo drive so much. Be fun. Joking just thought it be a cool thing to do. Lol

    I've been a fan of the C&TS since 1972! Of the two rides in the Rocky Mountains there is the D&SNG our of Durango and the C&TS out of Chama. Both are remnants of the former D&RGW narrow gauge lines which were abandoned in the late 60's, the last steam railroad in America. The D&SNG offers spectacular scenery while the C&TS shows some old time railroading plus excellent scenery as well. From Chama to the top of Cumbres pass the grade is 4 percent, the little coal burners put on quite the show of smoke and sound.
    I was fortunate enough to have been able to go to Durango in 1962 (I was 9) when it was a real, working freight railroad town but the tourists were taking it over even then.

    Awesome catch Rusty! That's one of the most popular scenic railroads out there. $135 is a reasonable price for an all-day steam excursion. I work for a railroad in Pennsylvania, and our all-day steam excursions start at $99 and go a bit over $200 depending what type of car you ride in. And that "weird sound" the locomotive was making was the dynamo. The steam turns the dynamo to create electricity to power the lights.

    Chama is a treasure. It almost was lost. The last freight train that went through was 1967 which was VERY LATE for steam powered freight operations. All of that railroad stuff you see here was just left here by the railroad after the last train went through. This is why this town survived at all. There is really little else out there. But the states picked it up and the town continues to this day with its future secure for the foreseeable future.

    $135 for a ride pulled by a steam engine is not bad. They are quite costly to maintain and run. Hard to find parts, tools, and expertise to keep them running! But worth it!

    I went on a train ride when I lived in Maryland. It went out to western Maryland and turned around and came back. You can get a better view of the landscape that way. Now a days you can almost spend that kind of monies doing just about anything that you chose to. Interesting town and thanks!!!

    Back in the 1880's day this ride would have cost one about $1!!!!
    Ive ridden the Silverton-Durango train and can highly recommend it. Think old west cowboy movie, expecting to see outlaws or Indians chasing the train. Dont know about this one.

      Not much anymore...they converted to oil recently after our government mandated.
      Might be one or 2 real original coal engines in Chama left...

  • @kenfishfisher
    @kenfishfisher ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The engine that originates from Antonito was converted to diesel, was what they told me.

    • @bobspamail
      @bobspamail ปีที่แล้ว

      They still have one coal burner. The other two are diesel.

    • @robertcolpitts4534
      @robertcolpitts4534 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They've been converting the steam locomotives on both the Durango and Silverton and Cumbres and Toltec lines to burn oil instead of coal. Eliminates the sparks and burning embers from the burning coal responsible for fires along the right-of-way and reduces maintenance costs plus equipment wear.

    • @stanfischer6175
      @stanfischer6175 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Another reason was the closing of the coal mine in Hesperus which supplied quality coal to both railroads. Oil firing is cleaner, easier to control but tricky. From what I've read and learned, smaller engines like what is used on the narrow gauge can actually be fired on recycled automotive oil.

    I don't know if I'd want to sit on a train for 6 hours and pay $135. I'd rather ride around in your EV for 3 cents a mile!
