My favourite quote from this episode is when Lister says "we've got to keep this dinosaur business quiet" and Rimmer replies "keep him quiet? He's rampaging about the food decks making more noise than two yodeling champions on honeymoon!"😄😄😄
So, this story was originally going to be one episode called 'Captain's Office', and would be the first episode's plot of Lister and Rimmer continually getting into trouble. They extended it into two episodes (IIRC because they still needed an eighth episode for the series) and so they used deleted scenes from Cassandra to make up the runtime.
I can see this working better as a single episode, because there would be shorter periods between the Captain’s Office scenes, so they would better work as a narrative through line.
Wasn’t it cause of the dinosaur prop was so expensive they wanted to use it over two episodes to even out the cost? I thought they had this episode planned out as part 1 of the finale and then the 2nd part they would go back to earth. That’s what remember from the making of doco anyway.
@@arlowho3844 Oh, maybe. I just remember that this story was a weird mishmash of different episode ideas, which is why it feels... well, like a weird mishmash of different episode ideas.
15:58 there is a deleted scene where Archie returns goes inside Hollister then Rimmer says to Hollister "you're about to get your voice back". They should have kept that scene in.
Last episode of BBC Red Dwarf next. Perhaps they felt it had ran its course, don't know. Then 9 years later the reunion series starting with the 3 part Back To Earth. This is either available as a 3 parter or edited single episode. I prefer the episodic version simply because it's not edited. Then series 10 , 11 and 12 , then the 90 minute, up till now finale.
I had pretty much wiped everything from my memory, and will endeavour to forget it again, especially the pɘnɨs joke, which apart from anything else undermines Kryten's character. All I remembered was Bird Man's line at the end: "Pete ate me. He must be really out of sorts. He's never done that before." There's something about that line spoken in a Welsh accent that I find delightful.
Relating to your reaction/title. I host karaoke and always say that the worst way I will ever describe a bad singer is to say, "I can honestly say, of all the songs I've had performed over the years... that was one of them." Pete Pt 2 is like that. Completely agree it was a 1 pt story that they had to flesh out for the extra episode. The season finale (which I'm sure you've seen before this posted) does NOT disappoint.
Good call. This episode was bad and not very well written. For lowbrow immature weirdos like me though who for some reason appreciate badly written, disjointed, stupid, repetitive nonsense in this format, this was gold 😂
Back to Earth wasn't a high point but I've been thinking since the gals started Red Dwarf that BTE will be a really weird one for them especially the inclusion of Corrie. I'm hoping they stick with it after that.
The reason for the 2-parter is that they had to produce a certain number of episodes. Unfortunately, they blew the budget on effects no, really), so they had to scrap one story and stretch another out to become a 2-parter, and not much time to do it in. The result? A messy story, far longer than it was designed to be.
"It didnt need to be a two parter. It feels as if they are just filling time" - 100% correct. The Cost of the CGI for the dinosaur used up so much budget that it had to be a two parter. Its the biggest issue I have with S8 is that it should have been 6 episodes long (BitR should have been 2 parts not 3, but also overspent). 5 of the 8 episodes should have only been 3 and were padded out and the pacing suffers as a result.
Lol @ writer's room. We don't do writer's rooms in the UK it is usually just one sad person in front of their pc or if they're lucky two dudes in different houses in front of their PCs who call themselves on the phone now and again
VIII starts somewhat promisingly, but you can tell by the end that there wasn’t enough cash or ideas to do a full series. The last two episodes feel like sketch shows, which is how deleted scenes from Cassandra ended up in this one. The commentary for Back to Earth features Doug talking about revisiting the old episodes before writing new ones, and you can really tell because he suddenly remembers how to write plots with themes and characters with depth again, even if there are still a few low points in the recent series. Nice to see that it’s not just us grizzled, cynical old fans who have this reaction to Pete Pt 2 though!
You girls might have recognised the actor who plays Killcrazy. Over here in Britain he's mostly known as Max Branning from East Enders but you'll probably recognise him as a talking Gecko from a lot of car insurance adverts.
I thought they missed an opportunity with kill crazy and Baxter being turned into apes, here's how i would have written it Rimmer: now destroy the time wand Lister: hang on, we still need to fix Kill Crazy and Baxter Rimmer: with those two who'd notice the difference, destroy it.
Paula and Kat, as we close out series VIII, it occurs to me to ask, have you watched the film "Bladerunner"? The reason I ask is that Red Dwarf : Back to Earth (series IX unofficially) is a massive homage to Bladerunner. If you are unfamiliar, most of it will go over your heads.
I rewatched this episode last week and had pretty much the same reaction, apart from the see ya in ten minutes joke, which had me howling with laughter like I did 20 years ago. I think just because it's what I would do in that situation with the wand, and so many times, uncalled for.
Original Starbuck was just the same, a lecherous, boozing, card playing, cheeky space cowboy.... :) New Starbuck is a slob, whereas the original liked to look dashing, otherwise they're much the same character.
I wonder why Cat was sidelined so much this series. You never see his bunk or his bunk mate, never really part of the storylines much. I think the 2 prisoner psycho bully guys have more writing than Cat does.

The edit made it look like you enjoyed the episode much more than you did! I've tended to watch Red Dwarf in the background so I don't have any particular antipathy for this episode. The one RD thing I didn't enjoy was one where it felt like it got too meta, the rest has been between OK to very good.
Almost done with S8 and can leave that behind. Unfortunately we got a 3-episode mini-series instead of series 9 and I don't have anything positive to say about it except that it's only three episodes. With series 10 and forward they're trying (and somewhat succeeding) to get back into what made the pre-series 7 episodes work so well.
This is a very mixed series, I think there are a lot of good jokes in it but most of the episodes fall flat overall. Cassandra is the best episode in my opinion.
I think this episode encapsulates what lots of people don't like about this season. There's good stuff there, but the 'plot' elements just don't generally hold it together well enough.
A repeating joke is funny only on one repeat, This is the second weakest season and one of the weakest episodes. I look forward to see your toughts on season X , i loved the new once !
Wow the way you feel is the way I felt watching this back on the day I liked the early episodes in this season but it felt like they ran out of ideas The final episode isn't great and the ending is blergh and I do believe they had planned multiple endings for this season
The fact you think the Battlestar Galactica your watching is the only one hurts my soul. I grew up loving the original as a kid with it's awful costumes cheesy dialogue wooden acting iffy special effects and obviously stock footage edited in. Starbuck was played by Dirk Benedick who also played Templeton " Faceman" Peck in the A team TV series and James Earl Jones was in it as he was between stints playing Darth Vader in the original trilogy. I'm soooo old.
I like most of Red Dwarf including the series many seem to disdain, (basically series 7 and 8) but agree this episode is pretty boring in places. It's my least favourite episode, I think. The running Captains Joke really dragged for me and I never quite got the repeat thing (i guess its a joke about buying themselves more time, except it involves them being there and wasting time to do it? Ha and... ha?) I liked the time wand as a gizmo, Pete the dinosaur, and the out of sync beat up was terrific. Stick with it though, ladies. I think this is the worst Red Dwarf gets, although many dislike the Red Dwarf: Back to Earth three parter which follows, but I think its an interesting unique thing. I would suggest the joined together Director's Cut version as the pacing is better and it's all round tighter. And if you haven't seen it, watch Bladerunner first as you will... small spoiler.... get more of the jokes. And Bladerunner is a really good film anyway, worth watching on its own merits. I'd suggest the Final Cut version, but watch the Theatrical Cut ending afterwards if you can. I'm sure its on TH-cam. Youll understand why when you see BtE.
A dreadful mess of an episode. People say Timewave is worse… it’s not. Timewave is just a wonky production with a wonky concept. Pete pt2 barely makes any sense. Thankfully Series 8 is almost over. Every single episode after this is better than this - some massively so.
This is it; this is the episode where Red Dwarf died. Things tick up for a moment in the finale of this series, but Pete pt2 marks the 'low point' from which the series will never fully recover.
I am with you on this, somehow Archie existed... and for no reason, why would they create a penis for an android? makes no sense...see ya in 10 minutes🙂....its why this series was not accepted until after series 9 was worse...plough through these terrible parts and it will get better...I am not one for spoilers but I gotta warn yaal.
i wonder if they had so many 2 part episodes cos the writer was forced to make 8 episode seasons in 7-8.. i think someone said he was forced to make more episodes to try and attract american audiences... or something like that.. so im wondering if he just wrote six episodes.. and instead of writing 2 new ones, he just made one episode into a two parter and filled it with a ton of junk?
I'm glad y'all're still reacting to these, even at the low point of the show - at least I enjoy watching your reactions, in this case more than the episode itself 😬
I know I've spent all of S8 spoiling this episode by moaning about it in the comments. If it helps, this is about the worst it gets. You're over it. It's history. Only good things to come (relatively) The next episode contains two of my favourite gags in the whole of Red Dwarf. Cat in the canteen is *chefs kiss*
@@ringod123 I like BTE more than most because I'm a massive BR fan. TPL was meh, but only meh. It wasn't offensively awful and by that point (I'm old) the golden years of RD were 20 years prior.
yeah the thing about series 7-8 is some bits are funny and some bits are cheesy and awful.. so when ur a huge fan its enough for you to still like it, but not as good as youd hope for.. and basically its bad writing.. and its just too cheesy.. its weird how i was a kid during season 1-6 but i enjoyed those seasons more even though it feels like they were less written for kids.. the kind of jokes in 8 seem like they are written for 4 year olds
Seems crazy we are almost done on series 8. Series9/Back to Earth.... my memories of it were it was better than no Red Dwarf, but not much more than that.... but curious to see what the Gals from the Dwarf think :-)
@@apm77 yeah I don’t think it’s universally agreed on, it’s a fairly divisive miniseries hence why I’m interested in other people’s opinions about it. IMO it’s got about 1 episode of good stuff in it over 3 episodes. Then again season 8 prob would have been better as a 6 episode season also.
@@JustinWatson23 I remember not liking it, either, though I don't remember why because I don't remember anything about the series, which...is not exactly a glowing recommendation for BTE either. It was forgettable, except for the part where I remember not liking it at all.
The nadir of Red Dwarf, IMO. They had something else planned for the finale but the budget ran out so Pete (originally a single episode called Captain's Office) got expanded to two parts.
Not gonna lie -- I think this is the most tedious episode of Red Dwarf. Five minutes of enjoyable moments stretched over half an hour without a plot to carry it through. The captain describing the dinosaur fight is the most painfully forced comedy they ever tried, and the Archie jokes just make me cringe. To top it off, they destroy the time wand even though they've been trusted with it, they seem to be the only ones who know how to use it, AND it certainly seems to be their best chance of escape. So no plot, weak humor, and terrible internal logic all add up to the absolute nadir of the series. It frustrated me to no end the first time I saw it because it's almost the end of the series and they aren't even TRYING to escape anymore -- which goes totally against the characters they've been for the previous 7 and a half series. I think you summed it up perfectly: Enjoyable moments, not an enjoyable episode!
Yeah, sadly, Pete Part 2 is structurally awful. Definitely one of my least favorite episodes of series VIII. A lot of the jokes feel dragged out and a lot of filler. Some fun moments but ultimately very messy. One more Episode of Series VIII and then it's time for the more modern run of the show!
Pretty much it was an episode expanded into two as they needed to fill a gap as an episode fell through due to budget reasons. So this is essential padding and deleted scenes (from other episodes) to bring it up to length.
I hate bones cracking - thank you for the trigger warning. Really cannot handle it. I just watched your mouths talk with my hands over my ears. I couldn't think fast enough to mute it. 😝
You're right the series gets less creative now and relys on repeating older plots and better effects rather than the tight character driven writing it became successful for. There's flashes of the old genius in most episodes but it's not consistent.
Not controversial for me. Series 10 is my fave along with 1,2 and 4. Also 11 and 12 are great and have some fantastic episodes. TPL is also really, really good. Only BTE is a bit sketchy.
The Dave era is ok, (spoiler free) it does however have a nasty habit of recycling story lines from earlier seasons. Just MHO. Still good stuff, and they eventually iron that out delightfully.
You're opinions on this episode are pretty much in synch with the rest of fandom. I believe that Pete Part Two came in dead last in a ranking of all the episodes with KrytieTv just above it. I suspect you'll like the next episode better. Hopefully, I'm correct. 🤞
I'm with you 100% on this gals . Now you know why this series is rated badly by fans . There were some memorable and funny jokes , but it was more a random collection of sketches with no discernable plot at all . Can't really remember if I bothered to watch the last episode . A bit like Dr Who no-one was happy with it and there was a real desire to see the boys from the Dwarf return and have a proper conclusion .
I quite agree. I cannot stand series 8, however watching these two watch it, it doesn't seem half as bad 🙃 The Gals should take a look at the Ganymede and Titan Silver Survey webpage, ranking every episode. Really funny and really well done. But after series 10 as that's where the series was up to at the time.
Another point to note here is that S8 is often touted as the "series that got 8 million viewers". By this point it was down to 4.52 million. While season 8 did, indeed, start with just over 8 million, viewers jumped ship (no pun intended) so that almost half its audience had gone by the time it finished.
you can see why this season is seen as a bit of a down grade its not that its not good but non of it lives up to the high quality of previous seasons there are good bits but it feels bitty
I like Captain Hollister's repeat jokes. Over the years, the more I watch them, the funnier they get.

So it isn’t just me that thought the pacing was all over the place. Now I really want some mint choc-chip ice cream
i wonder if they had so many 2 part episodes cos the writer was forced to make 8 episode seasons in 7-8.. i think someone said he was forced to make more episodes
to try and attract american audiences... or something like that.. so im wondering if he just wrote six episodes.. and instead of writing 2 new ones, he just made one
episode into a two parter and filled it with a ton of junk?
yeah this was an episode..
Only good things to come (relatively)
The next episode contains two of my favourite gags in the whole of Red Dwarf. Cat in the canteen is *chefs kiss*
14:03 That's the most unexpected Cadbury reference I've heard.
Yeah. “Pete” both parts… are my least favourite Red Dwarf episodes… except for Series IX Parts 2 & 3.
Only good things to come????? have you seen Back To Earth and The Promised Land?????
@@ringod123 I like BTE more than most because I'm a massive BR fan. TPL was meh, but only meh. It wasn't offensively awful and by that point (I'm old) the golden years of RD were 20 years prior.
Totally agree with your comments about this episode - I find it cringeworthy.
Some fun moments but this very much highlights why this season is often peoples least favourite. Enjoyable at moments but overall misses the mark :(
yeah the thing about series 7-8 is some bits are funny and some bits are cheesy and awful.. so when ur a huge fan its enough for you to still like it, but not as good as youd hope for.. and basically its bad writing.. and its just too cheesy.. its weird how i was a kid during season 1-6 but i enjoyed those seasons more even though it feels like they were less written for kids.. the kind of jokes in 8 seem like they are written for 4 year olds
Seems crazy we are almost done on series 8. Series9/Back to Earth.... my memories of it were it was better than no Red Dwarf, but not much more than that.... but curious to see what the Gals from the Dwarf think :-)
Back to Earth is wonderful. Very much a return to the vibe last seen in season five.
Yeah, the "Do you know what happens..." joke was rather tedious when I saw it when it first came out.
For my money, this is the least good episode of the entire show
So from 23:38 to 29:13 nothing but black screen
It should be fixed now! Something weird happened during the export and left filler in... Much like this episode 😂
@@KatAlysha I was thinking you thought it was off and left it.
You're right the series gets less creative now and relys on repeating older plots and better effects rather than the tight character driven writing it became successful for. There's flashes of the old genius in most episodes but it's not consistent.
The next one is rubbish too - but not as rubbish. Then it’s BTE which, though odd for sure, at least has a ton of heart and some truly magic moments.
I dunno, the end of the next episode is strangely moving.
controversial take, but I think you're going to love the dave era of dwarf
I can't wait for 10,11,12 and promised land.
There's not a dud amongst them in my opinion.
Some of my favorite eps are the new era ones.
FR! I love the Dave era so much
You're opinions on this episode are pretty much in synch with the rest of fandom. I believe that Pete Part Two came in dead last in a ranking of all the episodes with KrytieTv just above it. I suspect you'll like the next episode better. Hopefully, I'm correct. 🤞
I mean there not wrong 😂
I'm with you 100% on this gals . Now you know why this series is rated badly by fans . There were some memorable and funny jokes , but it was more a random collection of sketches with no discernable plot at all . Can't really remember if I bothered to watch the last episode . A bit like Dr Who no-one was happy with it and there was a real desire to see the boys from the Dwarf return and have a proper conclusion .
This seemed a lot more fun watching it with you guys... until S12 this was the worst-rated episode of the entire series in fan polls.
I quite agree. I cannot stand series 8, however watching these two watch it, it doesn't seem half as bad 🙃
The Gals should take a look at the Ganymede and Titan Silver Survey webpage, ranking every episode. Really funny and really well done. But after series 10 as that's where the series was up to at the time.
I like every ep of S12. I cant imagine one of them being considered worse than this one.
Another point to note here is that S8 is often touted as the "series that got 8 million viewers". By this point it was down to 4.52 million. While season 8 did, indeed, start with just over 8 million, viewers jumped ship (no pun intended) so that almost half its audience had gone by the time it finished.
you can see why this season is seen as a bit of a down grade its not that its not good but non of it lives up to the high quality of previous seasons
there are good bits but it feels bitty
