1:00 - 2:00 Almost sounds like hip hop spoken word. My take: "Here we have the side mic placed to one side, so you might want to have it on the same as the ride. We need to have the mics split into separate channels that's how the kit sounds animal, it's pannable -- Just make one of the mics mono, I know it's really loco But that cancels the phases and beefs up the stereo."
I've been really curious about combining multiple M/S pairs in recordings and here you've done it perfectly! Really great stuff, many thanks! Next let's hear it done all-Ribbon style, that way the condensers' brightness won't compete and mask the warmth of the ribbons as much. I think all-ribbon sessions will be the next big thing, but care must be taken with preamped ribbons because some are tending to be brighter than others. The final mix should be very rich with information (+ ambience)
M/S is my absolute favorite sound for drums. Huge, but totally natural. One caveat when using this, however; you need to have a player with a great sounding kit and can play it like a balanced ensemble. Have a drummer with a runaway hat or weak Tom presence, and it's back close micing.
This technique works great for pretty much any stereo micing application. If you are using a console, just mult the side mic to two channels and flip one out of phase. In a daw, just use any plug in with a phase invert function.
Sounds great man! Thanks for the tips! What do you uses to put the "side" mic channels out of phase? Also can you combine this technique with a close mic setup? I love the wideness!

What exactly is the distance of the M/S overheads from the center of the snare???
Great tutorial! Thanks :)
Thank you for videos !
One question please. Does MS technique work for overheads with the low ceiling of a vaulted cellar ?

How did you get the cymbals to the left hand side?
you didn't mention matrixing in the video
Is he the guy from AudioTechnica announcements? D: !!
What happened to your hair? :O
I miss my 4050. What a workhorse.
technically you just need one multi pattern mic! the other can be a cardioid only!
Even a sm 57 with a ribbon mic or a rode NT 2 or any other figure 8 can work, i try that also with shity Chinese mics and also work...
Chris Elliott and Tom Greene merged to form Charlie Waymire. :-D
