The problem is for people like me as a backyard painter, we don't have access to different paint to match the paint or trial and error. It's very difficult to find a body shop to scan and paint match the color you want also. But great work and over the years, I have learned so much from you and have to go back to the same video again and again to remind all the proper procedure you have said in the videos.

@BartSarton it's good for a finish that's not completely dead or checked up. Basically if a good buffing can bring it back, nu-finsh can breathe life into it again. Lovely job :) I took a car like 10 years ago to fix a clear coat problem on a silver color and they mismatched the primer underneath. After the paint, the clear coat was fixed, but underneath was this dark patch where they primed and it was standing out. The shop guys told me it was my eye, my brain developed a muscle memory, some kind of that BS and I could not get over it and that they did a perfect job, when the spot from the dark primer, under a silver color just made it visible as a dark patch... anyways, I am glad that someone out there looks after the customers. Now that I have that sad experience, and other similar ones, I am thinking of just can spray the car I have now, at home and that''s it. If I mess it, it's on me. Money in the pocket :) Thanks for your content. :)
Good on you for being a real tradesman. A lot of guys would have just sent it. But the fix did look much better to my eye. I’m sure the owner appreciated the extra effort. He bothered to import it, so he obviously cares about it.
I had this issue with a brand new car that was hit by a careless driver, the shop that did the paint repair did not do a terrible job but for me it was to obvious of a difference in tones and I asked them to re-spray it, though they didn’t give me a hard time about it they were clearly very bothered by me asking that but me being a person that takes great pride in anything I do I felt like it’s a small ask and no crazy expectation but it certainly seems that most people today just don’t care enough!
This is one of those "eye for it" things that takes a lot of experience to get. The owner of the paint and body shop I worked at (a loooong time ago) could spot a shade difference and tell exactly what drop of color needed to be added. It always amazed me back then, but now I see mismatched paint everywhere lol. Great catch, and good on you for fixing it for the owner!
I'm not a pro painter but i have painted some stuff and most of the time you can notice the difference and i did not notice it , maybe the camera but it did look a bit better after , i dont know what it was. Great job man. Good to know you have the pride to not let the first pass go. I had a fiberglass hood at a paint shop, gave them the gas flap to match and they got the colour so wrong.
There are quite a few of us who have the gene in us that just can't send something out unless it is 110% . I can't ever remember a motorcycle that I worked on, that came back to me. Do it correctly the first time, because the second time you have to do it for free. Can't make money, be successful, if you do shity work. There's a lot of shity work out there and that's partly the reason we are so successful. Word of mouth, not high dollar advertising, determines success. Really nice job Brian and that is why I watch your channel - learn from the best!
Ceremic coating can cause an issue, it's removed by compounding, sanding should do it but I always do both. I do ceremic and refinishing so I'm always running from a potential issue. Thanks Brain, your advice still helps me today.
30 years painting, when in doubt qualify with a spray out. Great video, although I would have titled it 'Confessions of an Obsessive Refinish Tech'! We've all been there. Respect!
I for sure saw the paint difference the first time and im happy you fixed it. I have a 2016 Golf R which is Lapiz Blue and there is some minor bubbling in the paint happening on the rear driver side door. VW will cover it under warranty however I know I'm going to see the paint difference between panels which is why I have not gotten it repaired yet. I keep my cars paint in good condition and even paint correct it myself but unfortunately you dont work up here in Canada so I dont trust them to match it :D
I paid good money once for a colour match bonnet spray on an S14 - I came out of surgery when I got the car; on a dark overcast afternoon - you know where this is going, the red car had an orange bonnet and I didn't notice. I took it back and they told me to get fucked. After alot of headaches I ended up paying someone else to fix it. I wish more painters / body work guys were like you.
Yeah i can see what you are talking about, but i bet 995 out of a 1000 shops would have sent that out. Ive honestly seen worse paint matches on factory fresh cars that have never been touched... my '14 Fit is one of them, the rear bumper that's original paint and correct VIN number is a worse match to the untouched body than what you had going on. Big props on making it more better 🙃
Man, I'm glad you didn't stop making content. I thought I saw a post awhile back about you throwing in the towel for more "important" things like family. Glad you made the right decision. I'm kidding, but I am glad to see you didn't fall off the map completely.
There def is some like slightly more purple and pale milkiness that looks really OEM and period correct, they def did a really good job with the restoration paint
MAN! I wish the body guy I used last had some of your pride in craftsmanship and attention to detail! Im even more upset about how much I payed and got quoted a third the final bill...
That's a awesome job and a awesome hatch. I have some bodyshop experience but very little painting experience. I'm by no means a painter. But I have the eye for it. I could tell the difference in the curve of the fender by the marker light. If it was my car I'd probably say I'd live with it but I know every time I see it especially in the sunlight it would stick out to where it's all I would see!
It might be the metal flake try changing the air pressure. Even with fine flake air pressure can make it "stand up" more or less change the reflectance.
I own a business doing mobile paint work for dealerships, typically small stuff like what’s shown in this video. Anyways, dealer wanted to see what I could do with a silver door, code KH3. Fixed the damage and blended the color into the quarter panel. Tried tinting the color and getting the best match I could but couldn’t get it perfect unfortunately. Drove me crazy! Ended up re doing it and turned out just fine after sleeping on it
I respect this dealer just because of you when I take my Acura for oil changes I be like I know that paint guy works here where he at lol Pembroke Pines
Birds in the bodyshop? Get 'em working! Mis-matched paint after you've just lacquered it does make your heart sink but it happens to all of us. If you're new to this like Brian said, #1 Take your time matching paint & do it natural light. Critique your match after coverage. Too light? Too dark, too much colour the one way? Get it right before progressing #2 Sprayout cards, use 'em. #3 Don't rush the build up of primer or color. Good save brother, love the Civics!
That's the RIGHT side😂 as in correct side for the steering wheel 😂 This video reminds me of when the guy who painted my ITR tried palming off mismatched Championship White shades on me. I refused to accept is so he had to blend it properly. Well done for having higher standards than him. I'd return to you for more bodywork, I wouldn't him.
you could see the tint difference when you were backing out, that fender was definitely the wrong color. I have pearl white, and I have to get some work done, I dread the paint not matching just like this.
That thing turned out FLAWLESS! I have a 91 SI in Tahitian Green Pearl & the paint isn’t the best but it’s rust free. I say I want to leave it as is but watching this shows me how much improvement a nice paint job will give.
I feel that same way, I’m a mechanic and if I road test a car after a repair or feel my repair is not up to par I will not deliver it to the customer until I’m satisfied that I’ve done the best I can, I don’t believe in comebacks even though they do happen. I feel it’s up to me to make sure it’s as good as it can be given all the circumstances. You’re a real professional!!
I think there's an issue with matching colors between on metal (Fender) and plastic (bumper). It's the same on the Mitsubishi Galant EA0 factory paint, espacially on blue and white paint. The plastic parts looking a bit more faded. Same here on that beautiful civic EG. The bumper is a bit more grey than the fender. Good work! I hope after seeing nearly every content from you I will be able to get as good as you. I really appreciate your channel🙏 Thx
So when you redo a spray does the shop manager question it? Or is he/she pretty understanding. Paint isn't cheap, nor is your time. You do a great job as usual. Thank you for making all these videos.
What you could also have done is painted wing in the wrong orientation. By that i mean at time of original paint, the wing may have been of car and sitting on a stand laying flat.. That offers up a difference of how the atoms of paint go onto surface. Especially the metallic in the paint, it even affects the colour going down.. Its something id always teach people looking into older repair works on certain vehicles

Great job man. Good to know you have the pride to not let the first pass go. I had a fiberglass hood at a paint shop, gave them the gas flap to match and they got the colour so wrong.
That's terrible! Hopefully you can get it sorted out.
I like how you didn't let the job be done until you were completely satisfied with your work painters can see many details others won't
I couldn’t have said it better myself, thank you so much for the comment
Ceremic coating can cause an issue, it's removed by compounding, sanding should do it but I always do both. I do ceremic and refinishing so I'm always running from a potential issue. Thanks Brain, your advice still helps me today.
Alright then am so instructed and encouraged since I just sprayed my first two booth job.
30 years painting, when in doubt qualify with a spray out. Great video, although I would have titled it 'Confessions of an Obsessive Refinish Tech'! We've all been there. Respect!
Sometimes i hear your calm advice when im dusting in repairs on old cars with new age materials dont overthink it its just paint he says
Even though it took a lot of time to do it over, the result was well worth it 💯 Thanks for your dedication to your craft 👍🏾
I appreciate you watching and thanks for the kind words!
Fender got so much paint on it, she be pulling to the right 🤣🤣. j/k
Thanks for all the great videos ❤ I have painted a dozen or so panels from watching your videos 🙌
Thats what its all about!
Ty man for the words. It was just something I had to do. Not only for the car but for myself
Man, I'm glad you didn't stop making content. I thought I saw a post awhile back about you throwing in the towel for more "important" things like family. Glad you made the right decision.
I'm kidding, but I am glad to see you didn't fall off the map completely.
Definitely have slowed down on the content, but never will ever stop making content.
Attention to details... Love it!
Nice job.
I had a RX7 back in 1995 I got resprayed in that Civic Captiva blue, that colour is very hard to match.
Very good end result!!! Can’t expect any better!!!
Man that blue just goes so will on the eg hatchback awesome job 👏
Awesome work showing the real life experiences you run into.
I want to paint my EF hatch really bad! wish I had some in person help! 😂
There def is some like slightly more purple and pale milkiness that looks really OEM and period correct, they def did a really good job with the restoration paint
1:57 I’d like to give a shout out to the bird in the shop that did a fly by.
MAN! I wish the body guy I used last had some of your pride in craftsmanship and attention to detail! Im even more upset about how much I payed and got quoted a third the final bill...
Bro, every time I watch your videos I learn something - excellent advice! 👍
Glad to hear it! Ty for watching my channel
The second try looked a really good match with the hood color. Great job!👏👏👏
Thank you!! 😊
Looked good the first shot, but I get it… you put your name on a job and it’s gotta be what it needs to be… great job!
Your attention to detail is impressive. Wish you were local to me!
RHD. Beautiful car. Appreciate your honesty. That would drive me crazy too. Good job.
Before repainting the fender was more blue when it's not the focal point unlike the hood at least. I don't paint but I think that's impressive work.
Way to nail it. Thats good work. GOOD WORK!
Fantastic work ethic and dedication to your craft. You’re a painters painter!
Amazing work! Respect! Don't know many shops that would bother.
It might be the metal flake try changing the air pressure. Even with fine flake air pressure can make it "stand up" more or less change the reflectance.
This video made me subscribe! Absolutely love the attention to detail! 👌🏻🔥
Welcome to one of the best channels on TH-cam
The end result.. you nailed it.
Ended up re doing it and turned out just fine after sleeping on it
Always turns out better the next day. When you sleep on things you think a lot during the night of what you could do better, glad it worked out.
I respect this dealer just because of you when I take my Acura for oil changes I be like I know that paint guy works here where he at lol Pembroke Pines
I personally prefer Harvard Blue Pearl, but this is also a great color for the hatch!
Goals! We need more people like you
Birds in the bodyshop? Get 'em working! Mis-matched paint after you've just lacquered it does make your heart sink but it happens to all of us. If you're new to this like Brian said, #1 Take your time matching paint & do it natural light. Critique your match after coverage. Too light? Too dark, too much colour the one way? Get it right before progressing #2 Sprayout cards, use 'em. #3 Don't rush the build up of primer or color. Good save brother, love the Civics!
Dam, seeing paint the first time I’m like it looks fine. And then seeing the 2nd respray I was like oh now that looks right
🎉awesome job mate 🎉 well done 😊 and happy customers pass on good details for more business ....
Well id match colour before starting any sanding so can check all panels around repair panel.
That's the RIGHT side😂 as in correct side for the steering wheel 😂
This video reminds me of when the guy who painted my ITR tried palming off mismatched Championship White shades on me. I refused to accept is so he had to blend it properly.
Well done for having higher standards than him. I'd return to you for more bodywork, I wouldn't him.
Great job in the End !
That’s taking pride in your work… looks great!
Thanks a bunch!
Noticed it right away, great job fixing it!
I appreciate the eye for detail.
Great job Brian
you could see the tint difference when you were backing out, that fender was definitely the wrong color.
I always use wax and grease remover with the Grey pad.
You and I would really get along!
I really appreciate your channel🙏
Thx
Yup. Its always a big issue as they reflect light differently
What a clean eg and k too!
You did the right thing. It’s a perfect match now brother looks good. You do good work.
Nice job 👍
So when you redo a spray does the shop manager question it? Or is he/she pretty understanding. Paint isn't cheap, nor is your time. You do a great job as usual. Thank you for making all these videos.
I am bodyshop manager
I'm not good enough with colors to know exactly when it's right, but I sure can tell when it's wrong.
It’s very true, but when it comes down to it, it was just the wrong color but what you’re saying is very valid in other cases
