My older two kids are 4 and 6, so we have just been rolling/decorating beeswax candles this year. It's been a great place to start for us.

For sewing with your little one they have plastic needles with the smaller plastic boards

She is actually using one of the plastic needles in the picture - with some large weave fabric (kind of like burlap)
