  • "the Ukrainians are succeeding in making the Russians think that Crimea, the defence of Crimea, air and land, is a cost...too far.'

I’m more confident about Europe pulling together to support Ukraine now than I was before when US aid was being blocked. Europeans understand that they themselves must ensure their own security and that Russia is the threat they face.

This is why it's so important that NATO and the West really steps up its aid to Ukraine. Don't allow Putin the slightest pause to catch his breath. Then, with a little sense and luck, his own betrayed Russian people will deal with him.

Having known Ukraine and Russia since 2000 (including having relatives in both countries and on Crimea and learning the Russian language to draw on primary sources), I've understood Russians simply don't feel agency. When Russia falls, it will come from within the power vertical, e.g. by an alliance between disillusioned military leaders and those who either want to protect the assets they stole during Putin's reign or others who may feel having been short-changed under the mafia state he's built.

My father and other 18 and 19 year olds were fighting and many dying in world war II. How Ukr cannot be drafting at least down to 20 years old is beyond me. Utterly absurd

Imagine Russia trying to coordinate military operations with significant Chinese forces that don't speak Russian. The war in Ukraine does offer China an opportunity to provide its military an opportunity to learn how to conduct modern conventional warfare while also demonstrating to Russia that it is no longer the military superpower it may have thought it was. Becoming indebted to China and N. Korea for support in Ukraine is definitely going to cost Russia.
