Welcome to the BABYMETAL Foxhole.🦊BABYMETAL formed in 2010, there were 3 original members (they were only 12 and 11 years old at that time) and we have watched them grow up and become one of the very best live acts on the planet.
You watched a compilation video with clips from several different concerts stitched together by a fan. Fortunately this was not a bad compilation, but if you can find single live performances they are always the better choice.
BABYMETAL are Su-metal (lead vocalist), Moametal and Momometal (in charge of backing vocals, harmonies and mainly hyping and involving the crowd with their choreo).
The original third member Yuimetal last performed in October 2017 and was absent for 12 months for undisclosed health reasons until she announced she was still not fully recovered and would be leaving the band.
Su and Moa continued as a duo for 4-5 years supported by 3 dancers who would take turns in the third spot. From about March 2020 only one of those dancers remained and finally that dancer - now known as Momometal - was revealed as the new official third member (and finally got a microphone) on 1st April 2023.
They are supported in all live shows by the Kami Band (long story, I'll try to keep it short - there are effectively two Kami Bands - East and West). East Kamis are the best Japanese session musicians you could hope to find and supported BABYMETAL since 2012 (they were phased in gradually over about 18 months playing a couple of festivals and the encores in some shows and became the full time support from March 2014) until their last appearance (to date) in January 2023.
West Kamis are American musicians who first appeared in 2019 to play initially in the lengthier foreign tours and they have been ever present since April 2023.
BABYMETAL are like nothing you will have seen or heard before. They brought a fusion of great metal instrumentals coupled with JPop hooks, melodies and aesthetics to create their very own sub-genre (Kawaii Metal - kawaii meaning cute or adorable) and they have continued to develop and evolve from those beginnings.
They don't limit themselves to any one main style or genre and you won't be able to pigeonhole or put them in any one box like you can with virtually every other band in the world. They are one of a kind and they invented their own genre and style that nobody has been able to copy successfully (some have tried, none came close) including bringing choreographed dancing to metal (but not as you might know it from pop acts where it is nearly always used just to fill the stage or give you almost naked girls (and boys) to look at to take your mind off often bland music).
BABYMETAL's choreo helps with interpreting the song - a lyric or the meaning etc, but it is designed to involve and lead the crowd, to give them their cues when to jump, shout, pump their fists, chant and so on. BABYMETAL are complete masters of crowd control and crowd involvement.
They have nearly 70 songs now, every one of them is different from the last. They have songs in virtually every metal genre but will mix in other musical styles and genres with the metal, often when you least expect it. Some songs lean towards their pop roots others are just good hard metal and they do everything in between - so if you don't like one song no problem - try another, the chances are you'll love it.
'Gimme Chocolate' is one of their fun songs and it was the official video for this song that went viral early in 2014 and got them a lot of attention before they started touring the world. They have gone on to become Japan's biggest musical export and one of the very best live performance acts on the planet.
They just want chocolate but are a bit worried about their weight - but chocolate! It would be so nice, they would be so happy, they worked hard. Can they just have a piece of chocolate please?🍫🍫🍫
They do have deeper songs and you have great suggestions for more (you enjoyed this, you can't go wrong with any of them since this is arguably the most divisive of their songs - some people listened to the first half of 'Gimme Chocolate' and never gave them another chance. Those people say they don't like them. The truth is they just don't know them).
For another early song try 'Ijime, Dame, Zettai' (Bullying, No More, Forever) live at Sonisphere 2014 - their first time in the UK, their first major event and metal festival outside of Japan. Aged 16 and 15 and with over 50,000 UK metalheads who don't understand any Japanese to impress. IDZ was the last song of the 5 they played that day - you will hear what the crowd thought at the end.
