  • Over 60,000 people are working in toxic, informal gold mines in the Peruvian city of La Rinconada. We braved the extreme elevation and the subzero temperatures to investigate what life is like in the highest inhabited place on earth.

    Hey man, awesome videos. I am in a gold mining business myself in Middle East. But we recover gold silver and palladium from electronic wastes. I have always loved to go to La rinaconada, I have some ideas that can turn that city into a major economical center. I read that mine is ooerated by a company, is that the case? There is a pyrolysis plant that takes in all those garbage in and spits out gasoline that can be used to generate power or run a generator.Please advise how can I keep in touch with someone there regarding my ideas?

    Fascinating documentary, I'm sure the people are wonderful, but I just felt depressed watching this place. Always cold and windy, full of discarded stuff. All grey and no green. I even find the lack of flat, open spaces discomforting - you're always scrambling about on a slope, often as not covered in loose rock. To me that's a kind of torture. My admiration to these people, they are made of stronger stuff than me!

    Thank you guys for this eye opening documentary. If I can suggest one thing is that in similar future documentaries you try to give a brief illustration of the connection between the supplying side (ie. the Peruvian miners) and the consuming side (the consumers of the developed world).
    Such injustice is not born out of a vacuum but rather from an unjust dependency created by human beings.
    Thank you again

      That's ridiculous. The world doesn't need La Rinconada's gold. It's not even a drop in the bucket. The Peruvian government has been trying to shut it down for years. It continues to exist because people are suckers for the "Get Rich Quick" idea, which is a subset of the "Something for Nothing" concept so popular with young Liberals right now.

      The middle class has become stronger, which is a good thing, as it is the class that keeps the economy going. The extremely poor in very remote areas have not benefited much from the country's growth. Be that as it may, about 80% of the population live in urban areas and 70% of the entire population now live on the coast.

      I think it's nonsense. I don't think Peru, being some white Frank Lopez English accented country, is a Thrid World country. This video is a rarity. The idea that Peru is some Third World haven is just based on the nonsense that Spaniards, -ez-surnamed people are Latin, non-white with Latin English accented and Italians and Nuyorican are white with Frank Lopez English accents, when it's the other way around.

    The first thing that came to my mind watching this was, Do these poor people get compensated for any Health issues they get working at this site, the no of occupational lung disease case must be pretty high, not to forget the poisoning from all that mercury and the high altitude sickness do they get compensated for it?

    • @breakingborders
      @breakingborders  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      dory po good question! As far I know there is no compensation. What they are doing is pretty much illegal. The federal government has little to no control of this area. An example of that is the trash that is piling up everywhere.

    There are lots of isolated communities in the world but they don't have as much trash as this place, after all those years living there, a normal person would start a system to make life more organized.

    I watched Parker in La Rinconada - very interesting visuals of life inside the mines, how/where the gold is found and extracted. The land of "tough men" where women are not permitted to enter the mines because they would cause "bad-luck" and make the gold veins disappear. Sadly, the "blood gold" is purchased by big tech companies/countries and goes "unnoticed" into the every-day products we use. Gallons of mercury is used to trap 'flower gold', which makes the largest portion of gold mined, in the world. Groups of boys are sent into "mining gallleries" where adults cannot fit and are often crushed by rockfalls, most boys are not even identified, or missed. Girls become part of the drunken, drug-fueled existence of these "tough men", as prostitutes. This place does not support life but it IS morbidly fascinating!

    I wonder if the interviewer is aware that he is interviewing people in a language that is not theirs “Spanish”, as a native Spanish speaker I see that both the interviewer and the person being interviewed struggle speaking Spanish….their native language is Quechua….there is not a single person in this town in which his/her native language is Spanish, these indigenous people speak Quechua and have been ignored always by the Peruvian government that treats them as second class citizens, 15% of the Peruvian population speak the original languages of Quechua and Aymara….
