- Tips on using multiple reference photos to create a single painting in Pen and Wash Watercolour.
MATERIALS
PEN: A Pigma Micron pen, 005 nib. I'm using a rather worn out Pigma Micron 005 nib pen.
PAPER: Size- 5"x7"
Arches 1401b HOT PRESS Paper for this Video.
My papers of choice include Arches 140lb Hot press and Cold press paper and Strathmore 500 series Sketchbooks. All are 100% cotton rag.
For beginners, I recommend starting with a high quality paper and experimenting with different types. As your style develops, you'll get a feel for which type is best. Waiting to switch to a better quality paper later will be much like learning to paint all over again.
MY PALETTE: All tube paints!
Winsor Newton- Yellow Ochre, Sepia, Burnt Sienna, Winsor Red, Davy's Gray, Ultramarine, Sap Green.
DaVinci - Phthalo Blue, Quinachridone Fuchsia, Cadmium Yellow Lemon, Cadmium Yellow Deep.
A note on Davy's Gray: I rarely use this pigment straight and when using it I usually mix it with each colour used.
PAINT PALETTE::
The palette is the mixing tray from a "Koi" Watercolour travel set. The colours are set up so the ones I mix together most often are close together.
The paints are squeezed onto slips of paper and then stuck to the palette.
This makes replacing or changing colours quick and easy.
BRUSH:
BRUSH: An inexpensive, Curry's brand, 3/8 inch flat brush.
REFERENCE IDEAS: come from my imagination/memory, my own photos or by painting on location.
I rarely draw what I see. I tend to draw what I wanted to see. If I use a reference photo, I prefer to look at it on my phone screen, nothing bigger. I'm not looking for a scene to paint, I'm looking for an idea to paint. Once I begin drawing I'll go for several minutes before I check the reference. Sometimes, once I've stared, I never refer to the reference again.
My demonstrations are done in smaller sizes, allowing the viewer to get in closer to the painting and better see my techniques. The same techniques I use on all of my large paintings.
I am currently unable to overlay an image of the reference photo as I don't have the proper software. As well, I haven't room on my current set up to simply display a photo on the work surface.

Thank you, Peter. Another gem.
Peter, I'm learning so much from watching you paint. I have loved drawing with pen and ink and have my own line of rubber stamps I drew. But now I can expand into watercolor. At this time of isolation I can't think of a better time to combine my love of drawing and watercolor. Haven't done watercolor since college. Way too many years ago. Thanks for the pleasure your sharing.
Thank you very much for these great comments Pammie.
Another lovely painting. I do watercolors but cannot find the courage to try a pen and wash. Until I do I will learn all I can from watching you. I do so enjoy watching you. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you very much Victoria. Jump in and give it a try. It's the only way to learn and have fun.
I love the way you draw and paint. You have inspired me to try some of my own. I hope to one day be as confidant as you.
Thank you very much Cindy. Just takes practice :)
Another wonder full sketch! So enjoy this color palette and method of painting. Thanks for encouraging relaxed and enjoyable art....
Thank you very much. That is what I like to hear :)

As always, your style is awesome! I did this one on 9 x 12 watercolor paper and added the words "Laundry Day" and framed it for my laundry room. It looks amazing! Thanks for all of your wonderful tutorials!!!

Another lovely painting. I love watercolor painting and have done some but haven't found the courage to try pen and wash. For now I will learn what I can from watching you, something I truly enjoy doing. As always, thanks for sharing.
I am sorry my comment loaded twice. I thought I had loaded but couldn't see it, so I typed it again.
Beautiful artist.
I like what you said in description. About drawing what you want to see
You are the best. please don't ever stop. I would pay for these courses. by far the best available online. :)

Nice comments Ed. Thank you :)
Beautiful! ❤
Hi Peter. What fabulous work you do. I just love your paintings. Just starting out with watercolors so you are an inspiration. Greetings from Ireland. Stay safe.
Hi Patricia. Always great to hear I've inspired someone. And hello from Canada.
Beautiful as always Peter! Thank you for sharing your talent with us:-)
You're very welcome Dessa. Thank you :)

I really enjoyed watching this painting, thanks
So glad you enjoyed this one. Thanks for watching. Peter :)
I really enjoy your work. So inspiring!
Thank you very much Debra. Always nice to hear I've inspired :)
👋 hi Peter, fascinating re photos and shadow fix. Now I can manipulate photos taken for art projects. Nevet immagined going wow. Yee Haa from Texas you rock 👏👏😁 thank you
Great idea Peter combining two images to give the whole thing more 'umphh'. I often add washing to a village painting even though it was never there in the first place. Adds a little colour to eg a stony old wall or peeling plaster. Your drawing in this one is so good. I really enjoyed watching you. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Chammi. I'm infamous for adding utility poles.
il lampione dà sempre un fascino senza tempo ,peter bravissimo nel realizzarlo
Bel commento. Grazie mille. Peter
Such a sweet painting
Thank you very much :)
Such a lovely sketch!
Thank you very much Kristina :)
Hi Peter, I posted this comment on the wrong site so here it is again. I said I loved the way you draw it is so inspirational. One detail would be to change the paint pallet for the photograph you are drawing, that way we budding artists could follow your strokes as you worked, just a thought. I'm in Toronto so can reminisce about some of the places you draw. Again, super work keep it up, can't wait for the next one.
Lol. So did I.
Thank you very much Maurice :) There just isn't room on my set up. And my set up is going to be even smaller soon as I'll be travelling and need something even more portable. Can I suggest you take a screen shot of the reference.
Beautiful as always
Thank you Peter. Love this one. Libby
Thank you as always Libby. So glad you enjoyed this one. Peter :)
Really precious
Thanks as always Pablo
Where do you get all the happy, relaxing background music from, Peter? It adds a lot. You know a lot of us binge you, right? (It's a good thing.)
Peter, he gets it from www.purple-planet.com. It's free and legal to use on his tutorials. I agree with you about binge watching his tutorials. I've been addicted them for a while now.
Thanks Peter. You'll have me blushing ;)
:)
very useful tutorial technics thank you
Thank you very much :)
Awesome. So talented!
Thank you again! Peter :)
Beautiful video thanks for sharing
You're very welcome. Thank you :)
No pun intended, but this really is a line and wash painting.
:) Thanks
I never tire ofcwatching you paint, you make it look so easy. Sadly when I try it never turns out like yours, any tips? Thank you for sharing your wonderful paintings x
Laine, I know the feeling. Here are a couple of things that have helped me. I would get frustrated doing a good sketch then ruining it when painting. I now do my sketch on plain drawing paper then using tracing paper I'll trace it onto watercolor paper, ink it and paint . If I ruin it I have my original to retrace again and again. Another thing I'll do sometimes is slow the video down to .25 speed so I can follow along and pause it if I have to. Hope this helps you.
Thank you very much Laine :) If I was to paint this again it wouldn't look the same for me as well. Just takes time and practice. Peter
Good advice Patrick
Patrick Nap Thank you for your very good advice Patrick, I will definitely give that a try x
Laine. Glad to help. Nothing worse than sketching for an hour and then ruining it in two minutes. The tracing paper took that fear away and now I always make at least two copies before I paint. If I make a mistake while painting I still complete the entire painting for practice and try to get the rest right. also I now have a nice file of sketches that can be reused. Go back and watch all his tutorials and read all the comments, also in the discussion section. You can learn a lot about his thinking. I never did art until I found Peter. He taught me more about watercolor that any of the other tutorials on youtube and he never speaks a word.
Hello! I was wondering if you could clarify how you flip the picture. Do you do it on a photo app? Thank you!
is there a different with water colour and water colour wash.
Not really Jeff. With Pen and "wash" you're really just adding some tint with the watercolor.
Really love this idea of combining photos together. Never thought about doing that before. MUST get myself a 3H.. I am drawing with a HB, but its a pain trying to keep it light.
Thanks as David. Glad you found it helpful. Peter :-)
Lovely, thank you Peter. Can you explain the advantage of squeezing paint onto paper rather than directly onto the palette. I'm a real beginner and don't understand.
The idea behind the paper was so he could change our colors quickly. Peter has recently said he is going to stop using the paper slips and is now squeezing the paint directly onto the mixing tray. Hope this helps. Patrick Nap, long time follower of Peter

Hi
I really admire your artwork and have learned a great deal from your videos. Thank you.
Debra L Pate Art
Thank you very much. Always great to hear I've helped in some way :)
What types of papers , are best suited for result.. I am facing some issues with the same, great to see your technique and simplicity Peter!
Hot press (smooth) is best for detail but very hard to do a wash. Cold press is best for most traditional watercolor styles.
love you Peter ......I am loving your channel and I am
your biggest fan ..............................................come for some days in INDIA
Thanks Vikrant :)
I'll sure there is endless inspiration in your wonderful country.
Thanks for sharing!
You are most welcome :) Thank you, Peter
Peter, as always beautiful.
what is the different between hot press and cold press paper?
Thanks Bahar. Hot Press is very smooth. Great for detail but hard to do a large traditional watercolor wash. Cold Press has a rougher surface and is the most commonly used paper for watercolor.
Hello Peter, I've done a few of your paintings and I would like to show you, it's possible? I love your work, your way to recreate the pictures if very unique. Could you do sometime a tutorial of basic watercolor techniques? I have problems with skies. Thanks a lot for your channel.
Just post it to my FB page
Your videos are so good. I am fascinated by the setup of your palette. I looked online to see if you had posted anything on it. Would you mind sharing. It looks like you have pieces of paint from pans placed in sections of your palette.
Carmel, Hope you don't mind my answering. I'm a long time follower of Peter and this question is asked a lot. if you click on the area above where it says " show more " a drop down will appear that shows all of Peters materials. PAINT PALETTE::
The palette is the mixing tray from a "Koi" Watercolour travel set. The colours are set up so the ones I mix together most often are close together.
The paints are squeezed onto slips of paper and then stuck to the palette.
This makes replacing or changing colours quick and easy. NOTE: ( Peter no longer uses a slip of paper and just squeezes the paint directly on the palette } It's basically a plastic tray, nothing fancy , that he sticks in a baggy when not in use.
I have my colors set up just like Peters but on a different ( but similar ) plastic tray. His color arrangement is consistent and rarely if ever varies. I call it my Sheeler palette and use it just for his weekly tutorials. Works great.
Hope this helps . Patrick Nap
Thank you very much Carmel. Yup, like Patrick says :)
Thanks Patrick. Appreciated :)
Patrick thank you. I looked everywhere but there....I have a Koi Watercolor set!!
beautiful
Thank you very much Mohammed :)
:o first time I see you using a pencil before starting!
LOL. Moment of weakness I guess ;)
Hi Peter, love your work but can’t find the “Read More” or “Video Writeup” icons or buttons to get more information in all your videos. Please help!,, Great tutorials!
Great!!!!!!!!
Thanks Nil !!!
Hey it's you! I know you from Facebook!😊
Brilliant 😏😏
Thank you Val !
Do you have a website? Thank you, lovely simple style.
Thanks Nancy. Sorry, no website.
I just stumbled upon your tutorials and I am amazed. You are fascinating to watch. Are you formally trained?
Thank you very much. I'm glad you found me. I am totally self taught :)
good👀❤❤
Thank you very much :)
So Peter, correct me if I'm wrong.... you draw in pencil when your doing a drawing from reference, and you draw with pen when you are drawing out of your head?
Hi David. I rarely ever use a pencil. I thought it might be helpful for those watching to see the layout done in pencil.
The photos are from Portugal by the way. And thank you.
Thank you. Porto Portugal to be exact. I took the photos :)
time way you draw is 70% and paint 30%, is always almost like this? congrat.
Yes Hector. The sketching always takes me longer.
Peter, thats way your final idea gets fascinant, and became art
Funny. A line and wash line and wash.
:)
