During Irma we lost power for 6 weeks. No cell towers no way to ask for help nothing. However, it hit me one day that I could use ON STAR in my Camaro to call people. So that’s what I did. They said the hurricane was a Cat 4 minus 1 point to a Cat 5 , 155 mile winds lasted for hours my sisters said. I thought it was going to hit Homasassa but turned in Port Charlotte and Fort Myers instead and the islands.
yeah my family is all from port Charlotte/ punta gorda and we road out the storm, we were here for Charlie in 2004 too, Charlie was bad, but this one sat on us and just hammered us for like 12 hours straight, it was pretty crazy to say the least, we are alive though, property can be replaced, but it's sure a roller-coaster ride of emotions.
What you don't see is what happened inside those homes. Once a hole is made into the roof, wall or window the force of the winds along with the pressure of the storm will cause the ceilings to drop onto & into all the rooms below. They are filled with wet broken pieces of the ceilings, insulation and anything that was stored in the rafters along with everything from the hole itself. Then there's the flood waters. Some had 5 feet, others less, but everything that was touching the ground absorbed and filled with this sewage filled water. Even if you have no roof damage the water came up and destroyed all walls, furniture, appliances, dresses, cabinets, bookcases etc. Only what was attached to the wall higher than the water or hung from a ceiling that didn't come down is left. You may have ceiling lights now but the electrical outlets and things that plugged into them are probably not working. The outside of a home only tells a part of the loss. The house is a shell but what makes it a home are the people, pets and memories of those inside and most of it is gone forever. The emotional and financial losses are overwhelming.
