GIRL: It’s really fast!
DENJIRO: This model has magnets attached on the rail and train. That means it’s running on the propulsion that comes from magnetic force. If you take a close look at the train, you’ll see that it’s slightly floating above the track. Because there is no friction, the propulsion can be greatly increased, resulting in a very fast speed. This is the same mechanism as the Linear Chuo Shinkansen line that’s being built right now. Now take a look at something else.
GIRL: The doll is floating!
DENJIRO: The doll is sitting on a magnet. Just like with the linear motor car model, it’s floating due to magnetic force. Now, let me explain what’s going on in the bottom. Inside a circular magnet are four electromagnets. If the bottom of the floating piece of magnet is the north pole, then the top of the circular magnet on the bottom is the south pole. The electromagnets in the middle are north poles. The lines of magnetic force go from the north pole to the south pole, creating countless curves. The floating magnet is in the center, sitting on top of the lines. Even if I push the floating magnet, it doesn’t lose its balance. So how is it maintaining its balance?
Let me explain using this balloon. It’s filled with helium, a light gas. There’s a strong neodymium magnet attached to the bottom. The magnet acts as a weight, so when I let go of the balloon, it slowly falls down. Now I’m going to hold a magnet that will repel the magnet on the balloon and slowly bring it up to the balloon from below.
By adjusting my hand to maintain the balloon’s balance, I can keep it floating steadily. The device from earlier was doing the same thing. When the floating magnet loses its balance, a sensor in the middle adjusts the magnetic force of the four electromagnets. That’s how it’s able to stay horizontal.
