How to Build a CURVED Post-and-Rail (Four Board) Fence | FULL PROCESS

- We've had a lot of questions about the post-and-rail fences we build here on the homestead -- probably because there's not that much info out there! So we thought we'd record the whole process. How we do it, at least.
Whilst not as common as the ubiquitous wire fences found throughout New Zealand, post-and-rail is a sturdy fence with a little more pizzazz. It's also fairly common in NZ, especially on homesteads, lifestyle blocks, and most stockyards.
We've built over 300 meters of post-and-rail over the past five years or so, but we're still learning. Ask us any questions you might have about the process, or comment if you have a better way of doing things!

Nice job 👍👍, one thing I was told by the local goldpine rep is to not cut the top of posts or bottoms as the treatment is only around the outta edge and can cause them to rot out... Maybe a varnish or stain to seal?
Cheers :) Yeah we come along a few weeks later and apply some wood preservative to the tops. That's also why we cut the tops at an angle, to shed water.
All you have to do is buy some copper naphthenate and retreat them . I do that anyway and then put tar on them too.

Great vid. Some really good techniques used and a really good result. FYI The wetter the rails the easier it is to manipulate 😉.
Thanks :) Yeah we've found that too, but the wetter they are the more they shrink, and the gaps between where the ends butt up get wider apart.

If you turn the nail upside down place the head on a solid surface and blunt the point with your hammer it won't then split the wood reason is it’s a crushing force not a separating force.
Your fencing is flat out beautiful. You might want to do them as works of art, where they cross each other and the like. Hopefully you can take satisfaction in them. Since treated wood isn't forever, I've heard the idea of putting 6" or so of gravel in the bottom of the hole followed by a piece of soil cloth then drop the post in place. All that just to help with drainage. I've seen similar fences that have either metal or wood caps on the posts. This makes sense since treated wood can still split and have other problems, especially at the end grain
Having tried to work with a married partner, I appreciate how well the two of you work together. Sometime you can make a video with your out takes!
In rural Maine, they char the bottoms of fence posts to ~1' above ground level. But, it's to keep animals controlled. Yours are beautiful.

Beautiful fence, great job, did you folks put ( what we call a gate rest) at the bottom of the latch post, to hold up the weight of the gate in the closed position, wood gates will sag over time...
Thanks! Haven't heard of a gate rest here. Sounds like a good idea though. This gate is resting on the post, but we tend to just tighten the gudgeons after a gate has settled.

Great job! Was the reason you had each rail end on a different post to prevent having 4 weak rail-to-rail joints on each post? By staggering them it seems like you’d only have 1 weak joint per post.
I will have to give yall an A-PLUS on fence building seems like a lot of extra expense. But damm sure looks good if you got the money honey,
I’ve watched this video twice now! It’s great for learning how to do curved fencing. But my question is what size lumber are you using? The half posts and boards are the 2x6 rough cut lumber? And the posts did you cut them in half?
There is nothing in the ground to strengthen the ground and both are vertical. No stones, cement. No antiseptic on wood. How long will it stay? Is there rotting in winter in autumn?
When you want to bend the rails more than 15cm.. you soak the timber in water and When the timber is completely soaked it will bend further without it breaking or cracking
How many posts holes did you dig by hand?
How deep are the post? Is there a reason you didn’t use concrete? How tall are the posts from bottom to top? Great video!
They said 60 centimetres which converts to just under 2 feet.

You need a set of American post hole diggers

Yep they're treated! We have different treatment system here - the posts are H4 treated since they'll be in the ground, the rails H3.2 treated as they're outside but not ground-contact :)
NEVER SEEN SUCH A NICE HOLE FROM SHOVELS, YALL DONT HAVE POSTHOLE DIGGERS THERE I TAKE IT, ARE \YOU GONNA CUT THE TOPS WITH AN ANGLE AND EVEN A LIL TAR TO COVER THE CUT, THOSE POSTS WILL LAST QUITE A WHILE, SHES LOOKIN GOOD
Thanks! The specialised spade and shovel make it easy! Often people will get posts rammed in, which we did for another long fence we built but requires a contractor to come out so we didn't for this one. Can also get post-hole borers either for the tractor or hand-held. We do have a set of handheld post hold diggers but they're not very common here and we find the spade and shovel easier and faster! The tops we cut at an angle and painted with Metalex, a wood preserver :)
