    Hey Mandy, thank u for ur detailed explanation it really helps in understanding better . I wanted to ask u about breathing during freestyle that when we exhale in water before rotation do we force exhale out n force inhale in or shud be a short breath in n out like we normally breathe . Becoz when I try to inhale I feel it's not enough for exhalation coz exhalation is longer n when I exhale I feel I'm desperate for inhalation before the next stroke as I take breath per 3 strokes.Besides how much time does it take normally to get our breath set without having to think about it n do it as second nature .

  • @eduardocavanagh
    @eduardocavanagh 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Mandy, the arm in the walking pattern is raised at the same time as the opposite leg advances so that the angular momentum stays constant, otherwise the body would rotate. But both movements generate an equal and opposite torque against the body long axis. In swimming and by the same principle, the counteracting torque of the arm should occur when the arm is already catching water, not when the arm is being extended. A good example of this is seen in the excellent pictures of Sheila Taormina book, "Swim speed strokes for swimmers," etc, Figure 8.4, pictures 3 to 8, of Peter Vanderkaay

    Thanks much Coach M! Do I enter with arm first ? Or kick first then arm enter water?

  • @nicktoeman
    @nicktoeman 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is very clear advice Mandy, thank you. However there is difference between swimming and walking that might not be obvious - do you agree?
    When walking propulsion comes from the leg in contact with the ground, for equivalence in the water therefore the lower leg in the rotated position should provide propulsion. When walking there is a transfer of momentum to the free (swinging) leg, in freestyle the upper leg should not kick against the rotation. This confused me when I first tried changing to a 2-beat kick (for which your walking comparison is more obvious, as others have noted). Initially I was trying to use the momentum of the upper leg to rotate my hips.
    I resolved this differently: when walking you try to keep your shoulders square to the direction of travel by opposing leg and arm swings; when swimming your shoulders should rotate with your hips, which transferred back to the ground would be a bit like a monster walk with left and right sides moving together. Your demonstration is probably simpler provided my mistake is avoided.

    Coach Mandy, you have enlightened me after all these years, I have been kicking on the wrong foot. So my understanding is for 2bk, right arm entry left foot kicks, can’t be more clear enough. My question is for 4bk, is it the same that right arm entry to water, left foot kicks for the first kick, then 234 when left arm entry to water ? And for 6bk, right arm entry , left foot kicks first 123 , the left arm enters water, right foot begins first with 456. Hope I am not confusing. Thank you

    It is the best kicking drill I have seen. I think, it's suitable for 2-beat kick. But for 4-beat Or 6-beat kick, how can I synchronize my arm with leg? Please help 💕🙏💕

    • @alwynpereira7363
      @alwynpereira7363 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      think of a 4 or 6 beat kick as a 2 beat kick with 2 or 4 other beats in between!

  • @inhabited83
    @inhabited83 ปีที่แล้ว

    I tried the walking exercise but for me it's more natural/my habit to have the same arm and leg moving together when going forward, not the opposite. When I try the opposite I end up thinking too much and it doesn't come naturally.
    I guess that's why when doing the 2 beat kick sometimes I rotate the arm and kick the leg on one side then the other instead of the opposite arm and leg like you do. Not sure if that makes the 2 kick beat inefficient?

    So this is the two-beat kick for swimming? Weird, perhaps some other youtube videos show the opposite hand/leg sequence.

  • @circlefmedia

    But I kick much faster than my arms move. What am I missing here?

    • @yajpillay8789
      @yajpillay8789 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Same. But coachs technique is just for having a casual swim, kicking much faster is probably for competitive swimmers. Overall kicking faster makes you use more energy

    • @SWIMVICE
      @SWIMVICE  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For freestyle there are 3 different kick patterns: two, four, and six beat kick. All of them are correct as they are al connected properly by the two beat kick. I have an older video demonstrating all three so you can see the similarities between them here:
      th-cam.com/video/qPQcHBHVYWo/w-d-xo.html
      As long as your kick is not disconnected, then a flutter kick (which is a six beat kick) is perfectly fine. Hope this helps! -Coach Mandy 🏊🏼‍♂️

    • @SWIMVICE
      @SWIMVICE  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Correct - most sprints or 200-1500m races use a 6 or a 4 beat kick. It’s important to connect properly first. 👍🏼 -Coach M
