Animal Crackers is a 1930 American pre-Code Marx Brothers comedy film directed by Victor Heerman. The film stars the Marx Brothers, (Groucho, Harpo, Chico, and Zeppo), with Lillian Roth and Margaret Dumont, based on the Marxes Broadway musical of the same name. Mayhem and zaniness ensue during a weekend party in honor of famed African explorer Captain Jeffrey T. Spaulding.
A critical and commercial success upon its initial release, Animal Crackers was shot at Paramount's Astoria Studios in Astoria, Queens, the second film the Brothers would make in New York City.
Animal Crackers was adapted from the successful 1928 Broadway musical of the same title by George S. Kaufman and Morrie Ryskind, also starring the Marx Brothers and Margaret Dumont. Also reprising their Broadway roles were Margaret Irving as Mrs. Whitehead and Robert Greig as Hives, the butler. Greig appeared with the Marx Brothers again in Horse Feathers (1932).
The complete, uncut Animal Crackers, which had only been available for decades in a version cut for the 1936 reissue, was restored from a 35mm duplicate negative held by the British Film Institute and released by Universal Pictures in 2016 in DCP format for theatrical distribution and Blu-ray for home video as part of The Marx Brothers Silver Screen Collection. The restored edition features an optional commentary track by film historian Jeffrey Vance.

There’s literally nothing I like better than the Marx Brothers.
Me as well. All time favorite guys ❤
harpo's entrance in this movie especially is just insane. within moments he is in his underwear firing a rifle at everything.
It occurs to me that every Marx Brothers movie is just them wandering onto the set of a completely different genre movie. Here they've wandered onto the set of a heist movie.
Here they are the heist movie 😂
I’m proud to say I’m 12 years old and this is my favorite movie
Thank you for enjoying the channel and yes this is one of my favorites!
Groucho can't resist sending up Eugene O'Neill's "Strange Interlude", which was playing on Broadway.
Hooray for Captain Spaulding and Internet Explorer
🥸🥸
Did someone call me snorerr
People don't realize what a double gift they emerged not long after sound added was perfected to save this dialouge. And a scene that dialouge goes forever without missing a line. Harpo was scraping a living as a street underdog in rough NY just as NY was growing. He had a rough life growing up and still turned the charm.
This is timeless comedy, as funny now as it was back in 1930. Lillian Roth was adorable.
🥸
I love how Chico somehow was a generic Italian / Polish/ Hungarian/ god knows. Amazing. God I grew up with the marx brothers. It was free on Portuguese TV late in the 70s. Because it was free probably 🤣
Nice! They were Jewish! In case you didn't know!!!!
@@user-ws1qf7ol4k And Chico learned to speak like an Italian as a kid to avoid getting beat up as a jewish kid in a predominantly italian neighbourhood!
"Pretty hard to be wrong when you keep answering your own questions" 😂😂😂
lol True!🥸
Hooray for Captain Spalding the animal explorer.
🥸🥸

Did someone call me Schnorrer?
Surely you jest, hey don't call me Shirley
@@Papifrankie Hooray, hooray, hooray.
Now I can finally recreate the Paramount moviegoing experience of the 30's complete with newsreels and cartoons. If I'm not mistaken, it won't be long before this goes public domain.
🥸🥸
Hooray for Captain Spaulding 🎉 thanks dr demento 😜
🥸🥸
Still laugh out loud funny in 2024. Love Grouch when he dictates the letter.
🥸🥸
It's free🎉

1:12 1:14 Marx brothers i cecrrsm
Yes
Ed Metcalf and Harpo performed that silverware routine since they were in Home Again in vaudeville together before WWI.
That's really interesting! It's amazing to see how long they've been performing that routine together.
Whatever it is...I'm against it!!!!! Groucho!
There is a very funny story which may even be true.
The brothers had an a appointment with a big studio boss. He was late. They baracaded the door to his office with furniture, got naked. When the door was broken in there they were, buck naked!!!
😆
Funny!!😂😂 never actually seen the Marx brothers. I knew of them, this is the first time I've actually watched them. I see Groucho's catch. He's a fast talker. Lol Harpo is very funny , for a man who doesn't speak a word. Chico is very talented. ❤
Check out "you bet your life" it was a game show. Groucho was the host. Very funny. Groucho is hilarious. He plays with the contestants. Trust me. .
Glad you loved the movie and see why the Marx Brothers are one of the best of the golden age of Hollywood😊🥸

Search "a night at the opera, crowded cabin scene"....funniest two minutes ever!!!
One of my favorite Marx Brothers film scens!
I grew up watching "You Bet Your Life!". Groucho was a genius!- Michael McClary, Professor of Trumpet 🎺, Georgia Perimeter College and GSU 🎉❤😂
Now I can finally watch this on TH-cam instead of internet archive

You filthy beast
Grouch looks so young here for a man around 40. He lived a very long life.
Yes he did!
And a hey-nanny-nanny and a hot-cha-cha!!
🥸🥸
I love the Marx Brothers they were ahead of their time they were before their time what time is it anyway
Hilarious 😆 love the Marx brothers 😂😂😂
"You're a contemptible cur!
I repeat, a contemptible cur!
Why if I were a man, you'd resent that! "
Reminds me a bit of Gilbert and Sullivan.
this is the funniest movie (well, maybe a tie w/ 'Defending Your Life'). Thanks for posting it!
Thank you!!!🥸
"anybody over there?"
"I don't see nobody"
"there you are, if there was anybody there he'd see them wouldn't I?"
Saw this in a theater in 35mm with a sharp picture and clear (albeit limited-range) sound 50 years ago. I guess the blurry thing we see here is the best we're going to get now.
Correction: According to Wikipedia, a complete master positive was found in Britain in 2014 and is available on Blue-ray.

Note to self: have Groucho Marx review every legal document in my life prior to me signing.
Own all their movies and a lot of docs. Had a dvd with shows and ads they did, some didnt even make it past the pilot. The one with them being Angels og one with Chico living in some blocks with a lot of tennants. I think i had close to 22-24 dvds at some point. Now its mainly the films. Was it RKO and MGM im not sure, must look at them at some point, but they're from 2 studios for sure..
Netflix or lifetime or roku channel they should make a new movie Marx Brothers

Welcome!🥸
How did they remember all of that dialog ??
They learned their trade doing live vaudeville shows in theatres. Lines had to be learned.
I understand they were stage plays/musicals written for the boys
Movie release date:1930 1 year after the stock market crash. Its understandable why audiences needed this type of satirical humor.
For your misguided information: This was a play that
premiered on Broadway long before the stock market crash.
@@waldcast Most people would never go to that play.
The movie raised the world to a funnier side of life with this movie=CONTEXT.
For the record: There was no sound in films when this play opened in the 20's. People flocked to Broadway to HEAR the Marx Brothers (for years before this film).
Sounds like The Wizard of Oz.....
What kind rifle he using in 14:51 ?

Blooper @ 31:30.
🥸
Nope. It' in the original script, it was done that way in the Broadway play.
The funny thing is in this nonsense was no sense, but this is the sense 😂

What 😂
Who designed the sets?.. Frank Lloyd Wright?..
Not sure but it was filmed at
Paramount's Astoria Studios in Queens, New York.
The sets are Art Deco, but I see what you mean. A bit similar to FLW.
did he invent comedy?
Not a easy to answer on that, the Marx Brothers was successful in vaudeville, on Broadway, and in 14 motion pictures from 1905 to 1949.
