  • Olympus OM-D E-M5 was introduced on February 8th, 2012. It is a 10-year-old camera. In this video I test that camera and give my thoughts if it is still a capable camera.

    From someone who bought an EM5 when it was released, I find that the camera does everything it did when I first bought it. I’d love to have a newer body, but I definitely don’t need it for my photography. The only downside of owning a 10 year old camera is that it means I’m 10 years older.

    I have the Mk ii and I just never feel the need to upgrade to the new 20mp cameras. Great camera, fantastic image quality.

    • @Leptospirosi
      @Leptospirosi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      May be the MkIII could be worth just for the Phase detection sensor, but, having both the Pen F and the GX9, I can tell you the picture quality is the same.
      The MkIII is a plasticky camera throught that won't hold a candle to the build quality of the amazing Mkll

    • @TL-xw6fh
      @TL-xw6fh 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Leptospirosi There's nothing wrong with contrast detect autofocus, and it is as fast as phase detection. Also, don't worry about the polycarbonate bodied cameras. I had the very first "plastic" bodied SLR in the world for nearly 40 years, the Canon AE-1, and the body was till in excellent condition, and it was very scratch resistant, unlike black painted metal cameras!

      I also have the Mk II and wouldn’t want to upgrade. Three main reasons -
      1. build quality - this is simply stunning. To me, having switched from Nikon, the camera looks cool and feels solid.
      2. battery - the battery life is better in the Mk II
      3. the optional grip - I have the the Oly grip fitted and it transforms the camera completely making it easy to carry (especially with long lenses).
      The image quality is still “up there” with the best (use the Pro lenses and it’s amazing). I’ve never been disappointed with poor image quality so for now, no intention to upgrade.

      I loved my m2. One of the most beautiful digital cameras ever made IMO. Only reason I felt the need to upgrade to a 1m2 was the focus just wasn’t quite enough for my needs 😢

    Everybody from m43 world are talking about how good are used cameras. And I start to think that way also. Everything I need to make a photo is shutter, aperature and iso and good lens, so I don’t need the newest body packed with latest inventions.
    Peter, you almost didn’t change since last 10 years :)

    Just came back from shooting a weekend of skiing with my EM5. It's lightweight, weather sealed and still delivers great images! And it won't break my bank if it would break at this point, it has paid off its cost many times over. I'm almost waiting for it to break so I have a reason to upgrade to a mark III...but it's still going strong.

  • @bsuthe

    "Is it still usable?" seems like such an absurd question! Of course it is. I still see no compelling need to upgrade my E-M10 Mk I. By the way, the E-M10 replaced my E-M5 Mk 1 (which I still have) simply because it has a built in flash. My biggest disappointment is that the two use different batteries, as is the case between several different Olympus cameras. Clever time travel video, by the way. I think you look better without the beard! 😄

      @YoSpiff 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have the EM10 Mk2 and recently bought the EM5 Mk3. They use the same batteries and that was a factor in my purchasing decision. I guess they decided compatibility did count for something.

    Peter, this is the coolest video you have ever made! I really enjoyed your creativity in telling the story of this much loved little camera. I bought one of the first imports of this camera into South Africa. I added a hand grip and the extra battery pack/carrier to it. Made it look a bit like the OM X :). I upgraded to the OM 1 and later OM 1 ii which I use all the time. I tested the OM 1 iii and have placed an order for one, although my supplier told me to wait and see the WOW. Depending on affordability ?? South Africans really strain under exchange rate against the US$. Thank you for this lovely video. I'm going to give my E-M5 a big happy birthday kiss.

    Fun video concept! I still have my original e-m5 and I use it as my "beater" weather sealed body. I put the 12-45 f/4 lens on it, and I don't worry about it getting wet or damaged or stolen as much. It's a perfectly capable and snappy camera even today. Which is a testament to how advanced it was in its time. I do agree, the buttons do feel a bit mushy. But all in all the dials are really nice and it's still fun to use.

    Fun and thought provoking, especially re the last ten years compared to the 10 years prior. That being said my mother is still using my venerable Powershot G2 and that still produces some great images despite the very limited megapixel count, not least the lovely lens.

    I love my E-M5.... I bought it in 2012. It re-awoke my love of photography & got me taking pictures again. Yes... I had used a Canon Ixus & Canon G5 point & shoot, but the E-M5 brought me back to a changeable lens system, since using my old Nikkormat FT film SLR. Over the past years, I have used the combo of E-M5 with an Olympus 25mm f1.8 prime... a great travel set-up. Yes it has had a bit of a rough journey, slung over my shoulder as I cycled across Europe & Asia, but it is well built & delivers wonderful images. The last long journey did start to show, with me having to super glue the thumb rest back on, having occasional start up issues & a sensor covered in dust (have got that cleaned now)
    I eventually upgraded to an E-M1 Mkii, for the better autofocus, dynamic range & advanced features. But I still love the retro feel & look of the E-M5 with a 25mm prime lens. I keep it as a back-up & second camera. It should last years yet.

    Just watched your video and its is so funny, that just this week I found my very first E-M5 (the silver one!!!), that started my journey with Olympus/OM-System in an old camera bag, including flash and portrait-camera-grip. I charged the batteries, I made a firmware-upgrade and everything works absolutely brilliantly. I made some of my best pictures with that camera, so I really appreciate to have this marvel still around me. Sure my OM-1s will not be jealous :-) Thank you so much for the wonderful content you make for us! Wishing you all the best and best regards, Markus

    Wonderful concept for a video! I’ve had my EM-5 since it first came out and I still use it today. It takes great images and from what I’ve read recently the whole “higher megapixel” debate doesn’t seem as critical as it once was. I think I’ll keep my 12 yr. old EM-5 for now…

    My old E-M5 with the RRS grip was a workhorse until it developed a bad mode dial. That was the only reason I finally justified buying the E-M1.3! I still have the E-M5 sitting in the box that it came in. I picked it up the other day and remembered all the traveling I did with it, I do miss how compact and "agile" it is!

    Just received my Em5 second hand from Japan today.. very clean and only 200$. I'm sure I could have gotten a cheaper one.
    Anyway I never had one before but it's basically a better ibis weather sealed version on my M10s. The fw is 2.3. I'll check to see if there is a newer one that has the 0sec antishock as it only has the 1/8sec currently. Looking forward to trying it WA weather.
    The point in the vid about 2012 cameras [sensors+pipeline+processing] being good enough today is totally true.. my more recent cameras are mainly 24Mpix and yes their high iso performance is fantastic, but for an EDC during the day the older cameras are more than sufficient, esp if you actually occasionally print pictures as I do.
    Love the humor Peter, happy lunar new year.

    Just as an FYI, the Olympus PEN E-P5 is actually a OMD-M5 Mk I "lite" camera. It has most of the same features, same TruPic image processor but the E-P5 has a mechanical shutter of 1/8000 (1/16000 electronic) vs 1/4000 in the M5. Best of all, it also has 5-axis IBIS. The E-P5 unfortunately doesn't come with a built-in EVF but an excellent add-on VF-4 is available if desired, plus the E-P5 has a tiny "emergency" built-in flash in a pinch. Lastly, I believe the M5 is weather sealed while the P5 isn't, but the P5 has WiFi while the M5 doesn't.
    I found and bought a mint E-P5 pre-owned about 3 years ago for only $250 with the kit 14-42mm EZ lens. It's a really great, small PEN camera which I still love to use, and it might make a very inexpensive alternative to the slightly more costly M5 Mk I thought I suspect current prices are even lower than I paid 3 years ago. Just a thought.

    2/8/22 Peter one of your better videos kept me interested, could have called it "Back to the Future", but I guess that title was already taken. My First Olympus OM-D 5 M 1 with the verticle grip ad on does show it age some with the knob size /placement issues. My Second Olympus OM-D 10 M 2 tends to be for me my favorite between the two due to the changes in bigger knobs, better viewfinder, and menu system, plus built-in flash. I do tend to use the OM-D10 more often than the OM-D 5.

Quite honestly, if I compare images at lower, most often used ISO's with my E-M1X, there is not enough difference to even matter -- at normal viewing sizes. It was a revolutionary camera in my opinion, and really pushed m4/3's into the professional level capability.

    I still have my EM-5 & its box (which is blue & white, not black). I still use it regularly even though I also now have an EM-5 MkIII, which I bought for its extra features, specifically focus bracketing.

      I still have the original Blue / White box with the kit 12-50 lens. For me this was quite a revelation at the time. I had Canon DSLR 500D and was weighing up upgrading to (I think 60D) and read some articles on mirrorless and Olympus. After trying both the choice became pretty easy. In ease of use and style of the camera there was no comparison. I upgraded to E-M1 mk ii about 2 years ago. I recently used my old em5 - agreed it still works but I found it awkward to use when compared to the E-M1 ii. Unfortunately for Olympus the lead they had back then is lost. I hope that OMD can make another big innovative leap.

    The old ones are the best , which is why I caught a brand new em10 Mkii from Olympus a couple of years ago .
    I know that some Fuji users like the old 16 megapixel cameras of their time over the new ones because of the look they have on the JPEG’s . I wonder how many Olympus users feel about how those older cameras produced their images . The old 12 megapixels of the pre em line just have that special quality of image that resembles film stock - but I am old enough to remember those days as if they were yesterday ha ha .

      Hi Pawel, I concur with all of that , but when the conditions are just right , many have spoken about how much they liked those images over newer models . It is a subjective thing and perhaps a romantic one st heart , from those who had used them and recall the memories they had with the images they got from those cameras.
      Somebody recently remarked that there was no such thing as a bad camera these days, especially when looking at what others were doing back in the post war period of the 50’s and 60’s.
      New cameras have given us so much and continue to do so, but how much of that do we really need ?
      I enjoy the gear I have and it works fir the situations I use it. Like many others of my age, my eye sight is not what it once was and I cannot use my old film cameras as I would like to. Here , Olympus rescued me and provided me with a great companion. to take everywhere . I also have a love for Fuji - Nikon - Canon and Pentax , having used them professionally . Weight was the other reason for switching to Olympus when I did and finally the choice of lenses available . When Olympus offered me a brand new EM 10 mark 2 for just a steal of a price, with extended cover and a lens included , I made the jump from Fuji and have not regretted it.
      It is not that Olympus is the best camera , as that is a ridicules statement to make about any brand of camera . But it delivers what I need and where it is not perfect - what camera is ha ha - I know how to adapt to produce the results I am looking for.
      Thanks for replying to my question .

    I still use the E-M5 , great camera, the ibis was a revelation and made my handheld shots sharper than on the panasonics and was essential for manual focus telephoto lenses. The only trouble is that I felt that certain lenses gave me a little shutter shock so I had to use the 1/8 of a second anti-shock sometimes (which came in a firmware) and I would miss the vital moment. Later models had 0 second anti-shock. Also there was no focus peaking, I had to use a workaround. But most of the time I didn't need focus peaking to manual focus. I'd like to upgrade one day but despite it's little annoyances it is a wonderful camera still.

    Got mine in 2013 and still use it occasionally. The newer sensor is definitely better, but the difference is hardly relevant for most use cases. We have one large print on the wall that I took with the 45/1.8 lens and the quality is really fine. So much better than the Nikon D300 that I had tested in comparison. In the test kit I also had the 75mm lens, but to get that took me somewhat longer, until last week. Very good, but not better than the Sigma 56/1.4. What I never liked about the E-M5 are the fiddly buttons. And Olympus should have added an electronic shutter via firmware, as with the E-M1.

If I'm not mistaken, they were released late in the camera life-cycle, just before the E-M5 mk II launched.
    Not exactly representative of the original OM-D E-M5, although the differences are only skin deep, whereas the internals are identical. 2012 Peter has been lazy and waited 2 years before shipping you the camera, after that phone call ;-)

    Mine is still usable. The cool thing about the em5 original is that even though my LCD screen went out (I have a repairman who can replace it if I wish) it is fully functional and all menus and scp settings can be accessed in the evf. Not easy but certainly doable. I recently posted some of the award winning and published images I made with my E M5 cameras. I’ve owned three. Traveled China with two of them. Summered some of Colorado’s highest peaks with the em5. In the mix of my gallery prints I often forget which camera I used and have to check the files. I have several OEM batteries so I can use my em5 and em1 together in a very compact kit for doing macro in the woodlands or when needing light weight gear for night time Astro. Iso3200 on the em5 was entirely useable. Nice grain and not ugly like many cameras in that era. I will use it until it dies and then look for another mint copy somewhere. I have the latest OM-D E-M1X and OM-D E-M1 Mark III and OM-D E-M1 Mark II plus some Pens and Tough cameras. They all have their special qualities that makes them worthy of my time and attention. Crafting an image is no different than other crafts. The tool that we are comfortable with and have become accustomed to is often going to serve us better than the latest greatest if we are not accustomed to it as well.
